  • Good introduction
Format: Paperback
For beginners should have general guidelines (not rules) for plant structure and pot selection as per John Naka’s books. Should have photo or drawing of different styles

  • Rudimentary writing vs. teach and learn
Format: Paperback
The cover of the book states: "A Complete Step-by-Step Guide to Mastering the Japanese Tradition of...". The author fails to meet their own stated criteria. If anything, this book is a rudimentary introduction to the concept of bonsai. There are zero "step-by-step" instructions to teach required skills to produce the art of bonsai. To me, bonsai is a practice and learn art form. Photos and illustrations are woefully lacking. I'm a "see and do" learner. Lack of photos/illustrations depicting specific needed skills is, by itself, a non-starter. I returned the book. ... show more

  • Worth the read even for beginners!
Format: Paperback
Excellent easy to read book on Bonsai. I have many technical and art books on Bonsai that can be difficult for a beginner to read. This book makes the "art" of bonsai accessible and even non Gardners will have a chance of creating a bonsai. I would suggest a juniper from a DIY or garden center as your first. Easy to style and forgiving. Wirth the read. ... show more

  • Beginners Guide to Bonsai packed with information
Format: Kindle
This book serves as an excellent introduction to the art of Bonsai, offering a well-organized and accessible guide to this ancient Japanese practice. Its step-by-step structure and comprehensive coverage make it especially suitable for beginners. I particularly appreciated the sections on selecting plant species, indoor vs. outdoor cultivation, pruning and shaping, as well as more specialized topics like group planting, forest Bonsai, and rock planting. While the book would benefit from more diagrams and color photographs—especially in the section on common plant diseases—it is clearly not intended as an exhaustive manual. Nonetheless, the breadth and quality of the information, combined with a robust reference section and links to websites, online courses, and Bonsai communities, make it a strong starting point for any enthusiast. ... show more

  • A Relaxing and Informative Guide to Bonsai for Beginners
Format: Kindle
The Art of Bonsai for Beginners is a fantastic introduction to the ancient and beautiful tradition of bonsai cultivation. Written in an easygoing and engaging style, this book takes what can be an intimidating art form and breaks it down into simple, actionable steps. Whether you’re just getting started or want to refine your technique, this book provides everything you need to nurture your own miniature masterpiece. One of the things I really loved about this book is how approachable it is. The author, Yoky Kanui, writes with a casual, encouraging tone, making it feel like you’re getting advice from a friend rather than a strict gardening manual. It covers all the essentials—history, styles, choosing your first bonsai, pruning, wiring, soil selection, and even troubleshooting common issues. The balance of practical tips and philosophy makes it a well-rounded read. I’m giving this book 5 stars because it’s exactly what a beginner needs: clear explanations, step-by-step guidance, and a deep appreciation for the patience and artistry behind bonsai. If you’ve ever wanted to try growing bonsai but didn’t know where to start, this book will give you the confidence to begin your journey. ... show more

  • Tiny Trees, Big Calm: A Beautiful Introduction to Bonsai
Format: Paperback
Let me start with this: I am a beginner with respect to Bonsai trees. This book is everything I hoped it would be. It's incredibly beginner-friendly without ever feeling watered down, walking you through each step with a gentle, encouraging tone. The author clearly respects the tradition of bonsai but makes it approachable for anyone who's just starting out. I found myself really drawn in by how much emphasis was placed not just on the technical side of tree care, but on the meditative and artistic aspects of the practice. The visuals and step-by-step guidance are a real highlight, especially when you're learning techniques like pruning or wiring for the first time. I also appreciated the section on choosing the right species. Very interesting and informative. ... show more
