In all, I enjoyed this book. It's aimed at beginners and covers matters such as differences between indoor and outdoor bonsai, general care, wiring, repotting, common problems, bonsai clubs and journaling progress. The book is well formatted with plenty of headings, some tables and FAQs. Its Contents covers an impressive 10 pages! A glossary and references are given at the end. The main thing I'd suggest improving is the pictures. As a visual learner, most of them are merely token and do little to enhance the reader's comprehension of the topic. ... show more

The cover of the book states: "A Complete Step-by-Step Guide to Mastering the Japanese Tradition of...". The author fails to meet their own stated criteria. If anything, this book is a rudimentary introduction to the concept of bonsai. There are zero "step-by-step" instructions to teach required skills to produce the art of bonsai. To me, bonsai is a practice and learn art form. Photos and illustrations are woefully lacking. I'm a "see and do" learner. What an amazing subject! I've always loved bonsai trees, they're such peaceful and perfect little miniatures. It's interesting when it's spoken of as an artform, but you really get the sense of that sentiment when you delve deeper into the topic. I really appreciate the in-depth approach that this book takes. You can easily tell that the author is passionate about the topic and really knows what they're talking about. It was a pleasure to read and will definitely require revisiting through every step of the journey.
