Description

Bloomsbury presents The Art of Batting written and read by Jarrod Kimber 'a wonderful tale' – David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd 'one of cricket’s most distinctive writers' – Andy Zaltzman COLOURFUL CRICKET HISTORY MEETS EXPERT ANALYSIS IN THIS RICHLY RESEARCHED EXPLORATION OF THE ART OF BATTING. Most batters just do their best, yet the top players create art. It is physically impossible to face an 80mph delivery and track it with your eyes, yet the greatest batters do more than just watch the ball, they can see into the future. This book is about the batters who see what mortals don’t. Javed Miandad purposefully makes errors to manipulate the field, Sachin Tendulkar dug up a pitch to take on Warne, Shivnarine Chanderpaul practised non-stop on a beach with tennis balls until he mastered technique and Joe Root’s great play against spin is known to be a confluence of three random events. Others, such as Smith, Pietersen and Richards, carried on the work of a man 100 years before their time, and Ranji changed cricket with a bucket. Their methods and stories are different, but their currency is the same: runs. Through interviews with cricketing greats such as David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd, Nasser Hussain, Rahul Dravid and Brian Lara, this book shows you the science, skill and culture that made the 50 greatest batters of all time – and, ultimately, how they conquered leather with willow. • Best Cricket Book this year!
Format: Hardcover
One of the most insightful books written about and on Cricket. If you are looking to understand the nuances of batting and what made Bradman, Sachin, Viv and many others like them great batters, this book provides a deep dive into various facets that make all of these batters great. It is also a great historical guide of batting for anyone new to Cricket and Batting in general. Jarrod is an excellent writer, podcaster and storyteller who combines his love of cricket with his love for storytelling to deliver this delightful, unputdownable book! ... show more

  • This book is a Sachin straight drive.
Format: Hardcover
Michelangelo has the Sistine Chapel, Leonardo da Vinci has the Mona Lisa and Jarrod Kimber finally has his holy grail - The Art of Batting. Whether or not you grew up watching Viv and Barry in World Series Cricket, Miandad and Border in the 80’s, Sachin and Lara in the 90’s, the Fab Four in the 2010s, or your Granddad constantly told you about ‘that Bradman chap’ - you’ll be able to take something away from this book. As others have stated, this is more than just a straight list ranking the best batters of all time. It goes into far more detail and does a great job explaining to us mere mortals just exactly how these artists went about their craft and what separated them from the ‘almost greats’. There are chapters dedicated to technique, running between the wickets, playing spin and even one dedicated to motivation. Kimber and his research team put in an incredible amount of effort into this project, and it really shows in the level of detail produced in these 288 pages. Now, if only he could ever write a similar book about bowling (SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!) PS: Would you believe me if I told you an attacking Australian left-handed wicketkeeper wasn’t on the list? I guess you’ll have to read it to find out for sure… ... show more

  • One of the best books in cricket going around..
Format: Hardcover
A skillfully crafted tribute to the evolution of the complex art of test batting. Delivered through a combination of the science behind it, analytics as well as several entertaining anecdotes. Kimber covers several aspects of batting that are rarely talked about in mainstream cricket writing and media and by the end of the book you will feel enriched on having been taken through the journey of batting over the last century and a half. The actual list of 50 greatest batters is just the icing on top while the meat of the book is so much more! ... show more

  • Far, Far More Than A Ranking Of Great Batters
Format: Kindle
Jarrod Kimber has taken a personal passion - compiling a list of the 50 greatest ever Test batters - and turned it into a magisterial study of how batting has adapted to changes in pitches, playing conditions, types of bowling and fielding. In so doing, he gives the readers numerous superb insights into what separates the great from the good. Why was W.G. Grace far and away the greatest batter of the 1800s, despite his bulk and a batting stance that would look perverse to modern viewers? How did Brian Lara outsmart the fielding captain? How did George Headley use force to weaken the bowling he faced? Why were some batters more motivated than overs to produce their best performances in every innings they played? How do great batters adapt how they see the ball when the pace exceeds 90 mph? Kimber gives you the technical detail but in prose that is easy and a joy to read. Five stars! ... show more

  • Best cricket book - waiting for the sequel on bowling - please Jarrod
Format: Audiobook
I have the audiobook. I heard most of it when I was on vacation - when I was trying to get to sleep. And, I say that not because it was boring but because it was so cozy like a nice cup of Darjeeling tea or hot cocoa on a cold winter morning. When I get a nightmare, I still open a random chapter of the book and listen to it again. I probably listen to at least 2-3 hrs of some Jarrod podcast every week so I like his voice. But, I like the passion of the man to discuss cricket. He has done more for cricket than most cricketers. This book is amazing because of the quirky things only Jarrod would bring up. Why is Tendulkar sandwiched between Hobbs and Bradman, is amazing but it’s only in the penultimate chapter. The last chapter about the ball was totally unexpected and amazing just like the one about eyes. I see him being a guest on very fledgling cricket podcasts. He wants to give back to the cricket YouTuber community. ... show more
