If you are a rod builder, you cannot help but appreciate the intricate detail of Clemens explanations for every facet of rod building. If you are apprehensive about trying a particular type of wrap, or uncertain of how to do anything relevant to rod building, then read this book, and Clemens other book with more full color pictures, “Custom Rod Thread Art.” Make no mistake, this book has the most detailed descriptions while the thread art delves in to a few more intricate wraps and gives layouts for many patterns. I have a few issues with this book. The first is the authors obsession with fuji products, he plugs them way to much in this book, at times it is like a magazine advertisement. The second is the lack of color photos in this hardcover book. There is nothing worse than trying to look at a black and white photo and have them explain the colors in text below the photo! Other than that it just needs some updating. Not all is bad, you will more than likely pick up a thing or two that you will use or try out in your next build. ... show more

    • The best book on rods and rod building.
I'm brand new to fly rod building so I purchased a couple of different books before undertaking my first build. I'm about halfway through rod #1 and this book has been by far the most helpful. It is extremely thorough and a real pleasure to read. It contains a great deal of very valuable information from designing to the actual building steps. Had I known then what I know now this would've been the only book on the subject I would've bought. Even if you don't plan on building a rod this book would be extremely helpful to selecting a rod with the characteristics you want for any type of fishing. I highly recommend it! ... show more
