  • Not Intuitive, but Fun
To really get the auto-tune sound, you have to study the device and learn the ropes. However, for basic live voice filtering, this is a really nice device.

  • Great bang for the buck for aspiring singers and even fun for some more professional live applications...
Having performed for over twenty years, I have experimented with a number of different devices that claim to add harmonies or enhance your vocal performance. I've used TC Helicon's Vocal Prism for years in the studio when creating demos or simply fleshing out harmonies and was curious about this product because of it's professed durability and the fact that it does not use any sort of MIDI or other interface to determine harmonic information. Instead it has an active microphone that "listens" to what is being performed around it and intelligently applies the harmonies in real time. This is no small accomplishment and I am excited to try it with my band just to see how well it performs. In the mean time, I used it for a fun project equipping voice alteration in a live setting and was duly impressed with the quality of the alteration and received several comments about the device afterwards. The presets are often named either directly or indirectly after recognizable people or characters and the Barry White modulation took my baritone voice way into the thick bass range with little noticeable artifacts. I doubt that this would be my preference for a recording session as there are cleaner sounding devices out there, but for the price, this is one fun voice machine that I expect will find its place in many live performance situations. The effects are nice and there is a karaoke mode that I have yet to try that reduces the lead vocal from any input source (1/8" jack) and allows you to add your own vocal. Could be great for a impromptu karaoke party or even as bonus attraction for a DJ business. Good bang for the buck and it feels durable. My only reason for not giving 5 stars relate to the power supply and powering up process. This unit uses a "dreaded" wall wart power supply which, while not as clunky as others, I fear will not hold up as well as the metal chassis of the device. Also, there is no power button or switch. The unit is always on when plugged in. I suppose this may be to minimize the "pop" associated with powering on and off but I am not certain the benefits outweigh the inconveniences. Still, this is lots of fun to use and I would definitely recommend to amateur musicians and singers who want to explore new harmonies and to sharpen their pitch accuracy and possibly to professional musicians looking to enhance their performances a bit. I coupled it with their microphone which feels and sounds comparable to a much more expensive microphone and includes a toggle button that can trigger different effects from the microphone which is a cool feature for live performance. I used it to jump between voices in a dramatic production that required a monstrously low voice and a much higher voice. ... show more

  • Awesome!
I play keys in a band, but I also do vocal harmonies with our lead singer. I wanted something that would help me keep my vocals behind hers, so I don't need a whole lot of effects, and this is probably more than I really need. But during the first evening that I played around with it, I was quite impressed with it's capability and quality, and it's so fun! The lead singer has a Boss VE-20 Vocal Performer , but she seems to have some trouble with it. Maybe she just needs to spend more time with it to learn it and get it set, but that aside, the small LCD makes it seem like it'd be difficult to use. Because of that, I decided to go a whole other direction with this TC Helicon Voice Live Play, and I'm glad I did! The TC Helicon Voice Live Play has a huge LCD that's easy to see, even while performing on stage. The large LCD makes it easy to navigate the settings and apply tweaks quickly. I recently played a gig outside, and even in direct sunlight I could see the LCD and status LED just fine. Another thing I like a lot is how the outputs can be configured. One of those options is a wet/dry arrangement, where you can send the processed mix out to the PA on the left channel, but then send just dry vocal out to a personal monitor on the right channel. Clever! This also has a built-in mic (which can be disabled) that helps the chorus and harmony-type effects stay on the right pitch with what's being played around it. It seems to work quite well (as long you and everyone else in the band are all on the right pitch!). It's built into a heavy, single-piece enclosure feels very solid and stays right where you put it. I feel like it could take quite a beating and keep on workin'. If you're on the fence between this and competing processors, just give this one a shot, and you'll probably be as impressed as I am. Within the first hour of owning it, I already felt like it was worth every penny, and a month later I'm still just as happy! ... show more

  • Blown Away
Just broke this thing open at band practice last night. I was using a Line 6 Pod X3 Pro with a Shure SM58, and it was a decent sound. This thing with an MP-75 mic blows that rig completely out of the water for sound quality. Easy to edit, sounds fantastic right out of the box. And the MP-75 has a "Hit" button on it that activates parameters on the pedal, sort of like an overdrive button for your voice. Learning curve is easy. If you've programmed a Pod or anything similar in the last 10 years, this is simple by comparison. It has a sort of "sound engineer" effect that is constantly working to make your voice punch through and sound clean, and then up to 7 different effects you can have on, off, or "Hit" effected... And you can store like 500 presets on the bloody thing. Basically, I'm programming one or two patches per song that my band covers (Currently a mix of Tool, Korn, Godsmack, System of a Down), with a seperate Hit effect per patch. Works perfectly so far. Then, when I'm done programming or working at practice, I can re-shuffle my patches with my computer via a USB port. (Only complaint: I'd really love a patch programming interface similar to Line 6's Gearbox.) So, um, yeah. No hesitation. Buy this thing with an MP-75, before they wise up and charge more money. ;-) ... show more
