  • Solid - large and worth buying
This sturdy and good looking helmet is rather large but as such allows for ample padding which can provide superior protection for LARP and such s(sword & shield martial arts, etc.). If clean and treat the exterial with polyurethane spray paint it will alleviate the need to oil the helmet to keep it from degrading. Note however some of the shine will be lost due to the polyurethane coating (which to me is an improvement as the helmet comes looking like a shiny chrome hood ornament for a show car instead of something that might have been made in the medieval times). Note that like many helmets it comes with no liner. For me this is another plus (similar to the head room) as lining a helmet can be fairly easy and inexpensive. I use a combination of close cell foam, soft foam, and a replacement liner for a bicycle helmet as materials. The crown of the helmet is lined first with a small oval of closed cell foam located at the center top inside of the helm (affixed with craft glue or adhesive calk - the latter takes longer to dry - a day perhaps - but can be used in quantity enough to insure a better bond) followed by the inside of the helm being lined (circled) with strips of closed cell foam. The fit must be just a bit loose and must be checking and adjusted as necessary during lining, resorting to soft foam in instances where the fit of the helmet is tight. Lastly the helmet liner is cut to match the helmet area and glued in. I recommend filling the helmet tightly with stuffing (perhaps crumpled newspaper) - ample enough to provide pressure to hold the liner against the helm during the adhesive setting period. Here are two pics of finished (lined) helmets - a Roman trooper helmet and a crusader helmet. ... show more

  • and the helm still slides on with a good fit (not putting pressure on my head)
I had previously bought a helm with 27" circumference around the forehead, and it was too tight to wear with a heavy arming cap (or even a wool cap). I spent hours looking at over a hundred helms, but had trouble finding a non-custom helm with 28"+ circumference, until I found this one. I can use a heavy arming cap, plus a mail coif on top of that, and the helm still slides on with a good fit (not putting pressure on my head). So it's a wonderful find. I did find, like others, that it tips forward an inch or so, and I need a bit of padding in the top/front if I want the eye slots to rest at eye level. Without any padding, it naturally tilts down, meaning I can still see through the eye slots (and can see the ground better) but cannot see looking straight out horizontally. The other issue, which I wouldn't call an issue, is the front of the helm touches my nose sometimes. If someone pushed on the front of the helm, it would push on your nose, without padding in the right spots. It's also difficult to see the ground where you are walking (you'll end up looking through the breathing holes), due to this type of helmet design. But the advantage is that it offers better protection of your mouth, jaw, and neck. One other observation is that the brass is very thin (you can push it in very easy), but it's not obvious unless you push on it :) Overall I love this helm and think it's a great price, and a good find. No regrets about being it at all. I would like to buy a second viking helm to have something more open, with better visibility. Both styles have their advantages and disadvantages. Note this helm is 18 gauge metal, so it's too light for SCA combat, although I don't plan to use it for that (14 guage or 16 gauge would be better). The helm is still quite heavy despite being made from thinner metal due to it's large size. If it had been made from 14 guage, it would way 10-12 pounds! ... show more

  • Great Quality, Low Price.
I purchased this on October 25. The projected date for arrival was Nov22-Dec13, but it came Yesterday (Nov1st)! I was very plesed. The helmet itself is well crafted and very sturdy. It feels heavy and solid, but not so heavy that it's unfomfortabe. It comes coated in oil to prevent rust, but that can easily be removed with a washcloth and a few minutes of good scrubbing. My advice would be to wait until you can get a more permanent coating if you take it off, like Polyurethane. My only real complaint is that it's a bit small in the face region, namely for the nose. This is no fault of the product as I have a pretty big head, and my nose isn't exactly short. All in all, a great product, and for the price I was very impressed with the quality. • It's more beautiful in person than in pictures, but doesn't fit my nose!
So this helmet is absolutely beautiful. Comes covered in oil to prevent rust with a bad smell, but looks very nice. I know some people have complained about the inside headrest coming apart, but mine looked fine as you can see from the picture. However, it did not fit my nose, and was smashing the tip of nose due to limited size. I definitely do not have a small nose, but it's not huge either. I have put measurements of the helmet in the pictures, so make sure you do the math about your own head circumstances including nose proportions to prevent having to return this. Otherwise, it would have made a beautiful piece. ... show more
