  • Best reliable purchase for the price, but no Google Home or Alexa
I love these switches and I’m happy I bought them. I purchased 3 of these for $20 each. I have one for my front porch lights, one for my back deck lights, and another for my upstairs hallway. Switchmate has an app that you can use to program and manage each device. Setup is really easy and takes about a minute for each device to be recognized by the app. You put your batteries in, then make sure your light is off (with the toggle in the down position), you place the device over the toggle (the Switchmate has magnets that will automatically stick to the main screws in your outlet), pair the Switchmate and it will turn your light on showing that it’s connected. Super easy! It allows multiple programs for each device and even has an option to reverse the action (I.e. flip the toggle down to turn it on, rather than up- which is very useful if you have multiple light switches for the same light). I’ve used my Switchmate in two very specific ways. 1) I use it to turn on my front of house and back of house lights automatically at the same time every day. I adjust that time seasonally according to whenever dusk is. 2) I’ve programmed my Switchmates to turn on my hallway and bedroom lights at different times on different days when I’m away from the house. Switchmate for instance has allowed me to program multiple light settings for each device. For example, my guest bedroom light is programmed to turn on at 9:08 pm on Tuesday and Friday, and off at 10:50 pm on both days. On Wednesday, it turns on at 11 pm for 29 minutes and then turns off. Then on Thursday and Saturday mornings, at 2 am, it turns on for 6 minutes and 15 minutes respectively. This sounds weird, but this is part of my device programming for when I’m away on vacation. I also have a device in my master BR and in my attic sewing room. I only set up the complicated programming when I’m away from the house on vacation for multiple days. Otherwise, I just leave the devices unused in my office. So far, I’m still on my First set of AA batteries 6 months later and I have 12% battery remaining- according to the app stats. This device could’ve been better with Alexa integration. It’s supposed to work with Alexa and Google Home, but so far I’ve had no success setting this device up with either program. Nonetheless, this device suits my needs perfectly. It’s reliable and it allows me to do a lot of easy programming for vacations that would have otherwise required a much more expensive device. The major annoying thing about these is that if you leave the device on all the time (while it is actively programmed to turn on at specific times) and you manually turn the light on or off ahead of time, it messes up the program (Flips the light the opposite of what you want) and instead of remaining on or off, it will flip the other way (and keep flipping opposite of what you want) and completely mess up your program requiring a soft reset of sorts. It’s not a big deal and can easily be corrected. But it is annoying. So in short, I leave this on for my front and back of house lights, but I leave the other devices in my office drawer unless I’m going on vacation. For the price, you cannot possibly find an easier solution to automatic lights that still allow so much programming. I have 5 of these now and I would easily buy these again. But, DO NOT BUY THESE IF YOU NEED ALEXA OR GH INTEGRATION!!!!! ... show more

  • Not horrible
The media could not be loaded. So first off, they’re incredibly easy to put on. You can do it with one hand in seconds. No tools or anything. The motor is a bit loud and sounds identical to an automatic soap dispenser you’d find in a public restroom. But otherwise I don’t have many complaints. The timer function allows you to schedule a time for when you want lights to turn on and off. It’s great because my kids like to sleep with their closet light on, but they’ll leave it on all day if I don’t turn it off myself. This way I can set it to turn off in the morning on its own. It’s also convenient to be able to get in bed and turn the bedroom light off with your phone. The batteries they come with are hit or miss. One of them had corrosion on the battery terminal, and another had the batteries already installed with a second set in the packaging. One of the switches didn’t want to pair with my phone at first either. It took a few tries but I finally got it paired. If you’re not home you can’t manually set the switches on or off, not see if they’re on. I suspect you have to be within Bluetooth range. So yeah. That’s all the issues I’ve had so far. It’s nice to be home and be able to shut off lights when people leave them on. But if you don’t have to worry about that or you’re looking for an automatic shut off timer, then I’d probably suggest looking for something else. ... show more

  • Google Assistant integration is broken
This is an OK alternative to the older homes where "smart switches" cannot be installed due to a lack of the neutral wire, which is needed to power those switches. However, this is hardly a replacement for a smart switch. It uses low energy Bluetooth and powered by 2 AA batteries. It is not compatible with Smart Things as of Oct 2017 (and may never become compatible as Smart Things currently has no plans to turn on the Bluetooth radio on their hub). It is compatible with the Wink hub, which I don't have. It is advertised to be working with Alexa (through Wink) and Google Assistant (by "linking" the Switch Mate app with Google Home app). However, since I have linked them successfully after going through some initial hurdles, the switch mate app has been acting like a dummy whenever I ask it to turn something on or off. The way it is supposed to work is I tell Google Assistant to ask Switch Mate to turn on / off a certain switch. Google Assistant then switches to Switch Mate app from within the voice interface and Switch Mate confirms those switches have been turned on / off. But they don't. Nothing happens. I can even make something up like porch lights and it will confirm the lights are off, which makes no sense. It seems like the Switch Mate app, when controlled through Google Assistant, simply repeats back to me what I say and confirms that the task is done, but it doesn't send any commands out. I can still control the switch from within the Switch Mate app and use voice inside their app, but it doesn't work through Google Assistant. Even when the apps are linked Google Assistant can't directly control the switch (this is not the case with other partners like Smart Things). The only way I can see this becoming a part of a smart home setup is if you have a Wink hub and add this switch as a "thing", and control it through Wink and use something like IFTTT or Stringify to control it. There are instructions on how to link it with Google Assistant or Google Home online and in the Q/A of this page. They didn't come with the product though. The installation is pretty straight forward, you put the batteries in and snap it to the wall switch. I initially had some trouble getting a code to link the apps but it worked when I tried on a different phone and suddenly started working for my original phone as well. Overall it's not so bad, but also has a few glitches here and there. I am thinking about buying a Wink Hub just to control this switch, so I could give one verbal command to my Google Home and it would turn off my main lights and turn on other lights. ... show more
