  • Best Purchase Ever!
Okay, so my brand new couch was pilling really bad, and I was really upset, especially since this is the couch that replaced the first one that was pilling, so the store wouldn't do anything about it. Someone suggested I get a fabric shaver and get rid of the pilling myself. I was very skeptical. I really didn't believe a fabric shaver could do it, since it was so bad, and I never had any luck in the past using the cheap little ones on my sweaters. I WAS SO WRONG! This shaver is the best purchase I ever made. After reading the reviews out here I purchased this one due to the large containment compartment, and the fact that I could plug it in or use batteries. When it arrived I plugged it in and just went to town on my couch! It's amazing! The pilling is completely gone and my couch looks brand new again! The unit worked great. At one point it started to slow down, but that was just because the containment compartment was full. As soon as I emptied the compartment it went back to full speed. I had no issues at all. It's very easy to use, and unless you are an amazon using fierce pressure I can't see how you could rip a hole in any fabric. It's so smooth and light to hold. Very easy to move over the surface. It even worked perfect around the uneven surfaces like the corners and ribbing (cording) of the couch. I seriously can't believe how well this worked. I'm still mad at Carsons for not doing anything about the couch they promised wouldn't pill this time, but this great little fabric shaver has lessened that pain a lot. I highly reccomend purchasing this unit if you have large surfaces to 'de-pill'! Works great! High quality product, great value, well worth the money! ... show more

  • Lives up to the good reviews
This is a good quality product and worked like a charm. We bought it because we read another review that said it worked to remove lint balls from a couch......it worked beautifully.

  • Good machine itself but too short of a cord.
The machine works well, but I do wish that the cord was longer. Sometimes an extension cord can be bothersome.

  • Superb! **UPDATE**
The version I purchased does include an AC adaptor and it works fabulously! I love wool and I love cashmere and I love knit sweaters but darned if the very fabrics that I love don't get pills and lint in the blink of an eye! This handy dandy little shaver was just what my sweater stash needed! I plugged this bad boy in the night that I got it and did sweater after sweater after sweater! After more than a month and multiple uses my sweaters look great and the shaver continues to work fantastically! I have not had a single problem with the shaver at all! Some items to note: *It takes time! Go slowly over your clothing. For heavily used garments it's going to take more than one pass to remove the lint. Slowly move the shaver at various angles. *Your sweaters won't look brand new! Wear and tear it happens. *If you here a kind of popping sound as you're going over your garment not to worry, this generally occurs when it is plucking a large pill off. UPDATE 1/2013 - A year later and this bad boy is still rocking lint / pill removal! The only issue that I've had with it to date is that the connector that attaches the power adapter to the base is a wee bit loose. I just have to make sure that it's firmly seated before I get started. All in all though not one regret. I use it at least a couple of times a month and it still does a fantastic job! ... show more

  • Not powerful enough, small shaver head.
While this product got good reviews, l found it to have little power and the shaver head, while looked large, is slightly dome shaped so only the center is actually touching the garment to remove the lint balls. Too late to return, my fault for not trying it sooner. Giving away and will get a different one. Was not cheap either, looked like my old one which lasted 15 years. ... show more

  • Stops working after a handful of uses - Bad power cords
I'd tried the small battery operated ones before, and they're garbage, so I was glad to pay more in hopes that Sunbeam's powered one would be better. Sunbeam's shaver worked great the first few times I used it, no problems. Then the winter ended, and the shaver got stored until the next year when my sweaters been warn needed shaving again. After only a couple uses that winter, the power started cutting out. It would cut out when I tipped the shaver one direction or another. It would also slow down and try to die as I tipped it more in the upright direction--I'd have to tip it more to the side to get it to work at full power. However, even that didn't last for more than a handful of attempts, before the thing completely died. I think that the motor is technically still good, but some sensor is just preventing it from working. I'd wondered if I'd perhaps gotten one with a defect--happens occasionally, so no big deal. However, I've seen several other reviews here with the same problem--that means that its a recurring problem for this item. This is an expensive item (for a sweater shaver), so there's seriously no excuse for this kind of shoddy workmanship. The worst thing is, I only own a few sweaters, so a sweater shaver rarely gets used. Even though it started breaking after only 5 or so uses, by the time I reached the 6th or 7th use it was already out of warranty. EDIT: I just started messing with it, to see if I could take it apart to figure out what's wrong and I figured out that it's the power cord itself that's causing the problem. If keep the shaver perfectly still and ONLY bend the cord in various directions, then the motor gets varying amounts of power (get's no power at all most of the time, but bending certain directions starts to give it power and increases it with the bend.) A new power cord will probably get this working again. One other thing. If you search for other powered shavers, you'll notice a few brands that look 100% identical to this one with the only visible difference being the brand label (e.g. Smartek, Oreck, Surround Air). These other brands are generally half the price as the Sunbeam. Sunbeam is a Smartek company, so I tend to wonder if the Sunbeam, Smartek and other "brands" are all actually made in exactly the same assembly lines, and then simply have a different label painted on. If that is the case, then it very literally means you're paying for the name. ... show more
