  • consider your options; it COULD be worth it to buy this!
Platform: PlayStation 4 Edition: Champion Edition
[This review has been edited.] It isn't often that I pre-order games (in fact, I think this was the first one I've EVER pre-ordered, at least on Amazon!), but I didn't have any previous release of the game, and it was only about 30 bucks, and I said, "Eh, why not?" (Also, if you pre-ordered, you "got" an extra costume color for each character... really not much of a "bonus," but kind of neat! [You'll see later on, if you don't know already, why I put "got" in quotes.]) I'm really not an expert on fighting games; I haven't played every one that has ever come out, or every "edition" of every one of them, but I usually like them, although usually I mainly just play in two-player matches (most often with my older bro), and I don't ever play online (I know a lot of other people love to do that, but it's not for me). So, how online matches function, or how many people are playing online, really don't affect me, with this or any other fighting games. Nevertheless, I do usually enjoy fighting games, at least when playing 2P, and Street Fighter has always been my favorite series, from the original SF2 for SNES, which I played the heck out of as a kid (and probably played against the computer more times than any [or almost any] other fighting game I've ever played!). Most of the SF games I've played, I would give at least 4 stars (and I did, in the cases of the other ones I've reviewed). As for this release of SFV, I might have given it 5 stars if not for the fact there is a code, and how Capcom has handled this release. It isn't even anything about the actual gameplay that really bothers me. Although there's a good chance that you wouldn't (and maybe didn't) know it from Capcom's (or other people's) descriptions of this release (or at least some of them), most of the stuff you "get with the game" (including the above-mentioned pre-order costume colors) are NOT actually ready to use from the beginning. The disc comes with with a CODE that DOWNLOADS it. From what I've read, Capcom has not made it clear that there is a code at all, and have made it sound like everything IS there and ready from the get-go. You shouldn't mislead people, Capcom! If you have a previous release of this game, you can buy the "Upgrade Kit," which is (I think) a little cheaper than the disc with a code, or you can still get characters and stuff without the Upgrade Kit by using Fight Money or real money, so you don't have to buy another disc release to get any of the stuff. There IS that, although I don't like it when you have to download something to get it, even if there IS a code for it! It would have been nice if Capcom had at least been clearer and more up-front about the codes, especially since they do have major drawbacks. While they have an expiration date of 12/31/99, which may make it sound as though they will be valid for a LONG time, in reality they will certainly NOT be good for NEARLY that long, because how much longer will the PS4 continue to be supported? After all, I have already heard talk of PS5! I seriously doubt that any companies will still be supporting PS4 when I'm about 118 years old! Also, there is the fact that any codes that come with used copies of the disc will most likely have already been redeemed. In any case, I'm glad I got this. From what I've played, I think it's a really good game. As I mentioned before, I didn't have any previous release of this game and thus didn't have any of the DLC already, so considering what my options were --- buying this release, buying an earlier release (and the Upgrade Kit), getting all of the DLC separately (by buying it with real money or unlocking it with FM), or not having the game at all --- this was clearly the one to go with, especially since it was only about $30! I certainly can't complain about THAT price, especially since getting all of the DLC separately would have cost several HUNDREDS of dollars in "real" money! I probably wouldn't have paid $60 or more, though. So, consider all of your options before deciding whether or not to buy this, and PLEASE don't let the low average star rating (as I write this) or the percentage of 1-star ratings scare you away. It COULD be worth it to buy this, depending on your situation, as it was with me. As for this paragraph, it's December 2022 (on Christmas Eve!) as I'm adding it to the review, which is how I can be mentioning what I'm about to say. Now SF6 is set to be released about the middle of 2023, and from the descriptions I've read about the $60 Standard Edition and the $85(!!) Deluxe, it sounds like Capcom is most likely going to go through the same old routine (or pretty much). I was wondering when Capcom was going to get back to milking the cow that is the SF franchise! ... show more
