First caveat, I play this with a group of highly experienced board gamers and we meet up somewhat regularly to play a wide variety of games. Second caveat, this game isn't really 100% fair - there's a strong element of luck of the draw in a lot of ways. That being said, this is our favorite filler games. There are well over 100 cards, all of which are unique, with nearly a dozen colors - meaning you will quite literally never have the same game twice. If everyone takes their turns quickly and pays attention, games can fly by in 15 to 20 minutes. On your turn, you'll have plenty of decisions to make but each action is relatively simple - play a card, take a card. Simply an excellent game by all accounts. A steal at this price.

From the perspective of a fairly frequent player of tabletop games, this one is enjoyable overall but suffers a bit from some downsides: 1) The core mechanic is to collect a set of cards that work well together (to maximize your points), but there there are so many card types (colors) that are specific to other cards that it can be unsatisfying when trying to build a cohesive set. 2) Players who collect a good set of cards are in essence left waiting around for the endgame trigger. They don’t particularly have a way of impacting other players or hastening the ending. And the speed of getting to this endgame point depends a lot on randomness rather than strategy (e.g., with the starting hand and what cards show up). 3) Unless you perform an unrealistic amount of tracking other players’ decisions, players don’t really have a sense of how they are doing (compared to others) until everyone reveals their cards at the end. This light be less frustrating relative to a game where someone knows they have lost earlier on and won’t be able to catch up, but it is a strange experience. Also of note for those who are interested in the game due to the book series, the game’s flow and mechanics are not particularly tied to the books. (I enjoyed the books, but have not felt a connection to them when playing.)

I am OBSESSED with the Red Rising series and this obsession just got even better now that I have a game I can play. The mechanics are interesting but if you have any knowledge of the series, it makes a lot more sense. However, I wouldn't say the barrier to entry to play if you haven't experienced the books is high. My husband and I played the game a few months before getting into the books and it was just as enjoyable. Now that we are into the books, it's even better! Love that the game comes with all the baggies you could need to organize the cards. I actually recommend the non-deluxe/collector's edition (THIS ONE) because the token colors are much easier to discern vs the other version. If I had an excuse to buy again, I would.

This game is mad fun, haven't even read the books. It takes a game or two to understand what's worth holding onto for end game scoring, but all of my friends love this game. We can knock it out in 15 minutes now. Typically takes 45 minutes with explaining to a new player. Great game by a great developer!

I’m apparently becoming a fan of this publisher, as this is my third game from them that I really enjoy. I bought this for solo play as Stonemaier games Automa system is brilliant to play for solo games. I’ve played at least a half dozen times and genuinely enjoy it. I want to play multiplayer but wonder how that will go as each card is unique in its abilities and how it scores, making me wonder if everyone needing to read each card played to the board will slow it to a crawl. However, people say it shines at high player counts, so I’m assuming my fears are for naught. Great solo experience, for sure, though.

I love the Red Rising series, so when I saw there was a game based on the books, I was ecstatic. I was not disappointed. The artwork is stunning, the pieces are well made, and the game is enjoyable. (I just have to keep a poker face so I don’t give away what cards I have in my hand—I can’t always control my reactions to the characters, whether positive or negative). I was able to teach the game to two sets of people who’d never read the books, and they picked it up well. My only complaint would be that there are so many cards that it’s hard to get good combinations—most cards never come out of the deck. Still, overall, a fantastic game.
