Features

  • METRIC-SIZED OR ADJUSTABLE WRENCHES AND SCREWDRIVERS ARE REQUIRED FOR ASSEMBLY. Step N Tilt is fast and easy to use. Simply step and tilt. This patented lawn aerator makes core aeration easy and enjoyable for do-it-yourselfers and professional landscapers. The tilting motion is easier on your shoulders and backs. Its larger stepping surface improves operator comfort.
  • For use in areas with grass only; tines will clog if used in bare soil. All coring lawn aerators require that the soil be VERY moist. This Step 'N Tilt is no exception. Please aerate one day after at least one inch of rain or irrigation. If you have a sprinkler system, each sprinkler zone will need to run for 60-90 minutes. In other words, the soil must be very moist. Question: Why must I wait one day? Answer: Because it takes time for water to be absorbed into the soil, particularly clay soil.
  • Step N Tilt is designed for all kinds of soil, including heavy clay soil - make sure the soil is very moist but not wet. If the tines clog, the soil may be too dry or too wet for aeration. If the tines are unable to penetrate the ground and clogging, the soil is definitely too dry. Please remember to aerate when the soil is VERY MOIST only. A soil core remover is included. The aerator tines are case-hardened for extra durability. The tines may be sharpened or replaced when worn.
  • Step 'N Tilt is designed for operators between 4-feet and 6-feet 5-inches tall. Recommended minimum operator weight to use one set and two sets of tines are 80lbs and 150lbs, respectively. Please begin by using one set of tines only regardless of your weight. You may use two sets of tines after you have gained enough experience and if you weigh more than 150lbs. Two sets of tines are significantly more difficult to use than one set of tines.
  • Step 'N Tilt is recommended for aerating small yards or areas not accessible by motorized lawn aerators. It can be used to aerate large yards but will require significantly longer time and effort than a motorized lawn aerator. The tines will create 3.4" deep, 0.79" diameter holes in the ground.
  • U.S. Patent 8714275, U.S. Patent 11147202, U.S. Patent D1027582, UK Design Number 6152191, and EU Community Design Number 00.

Description

Differences between version 4 and version 3: Step ‘N Tilt version 4 comes with aerator tines that are electro-zinc plated whereas version 3 comes with tines that are powder coated. In addition, the aerator tines of version 4 have a slightly different shape than those of version 3. This unit comes with an optional soil core container. The soil core container allows you to collect soil cores during lawn aeration. Its primary purpose is to improve the ground level or drainage of your yard without killing the grass. By collecting soil cores from areas that are high and disposing the soil cores to areas that are low, you will gradually improve the ground level or drainage of your lawn over a period of several aeration seasons. The Step 'N Tilt Lawn Aerator is very effective at alleviating soil compaction problems. Simply step on the platform to insert aerator tines into the ground and tilt the handle bar back to remove the tines from the ground - it's that effortless and easy! The Step 'N Tilt Lawn Aerator is a true core aerator, not a spike aerator. Core aeration is a proven lawn aeration method recommended by lawn experts and university extension services worldwide. Its highly engineered hollow core aerator tines are extremely effective at extracting soil cores while creating 3.4" deep, 0.79" diameter holes in the ground. The sharpen-able, replaceable, and recyclable carbon steel aerator tines are case-hardened for extra durability. The package includes a soil core removal tool. An additional bonus: The Step 'N Tilt Lawn Aerator also functions as a handtruck.

  • Company Stands Behind Product
Size: Std Length Coring Tines without Container
Product is built sturdy and solid. Instructions for assembly and use technique are very detailed. If you follow the instruction to aerate after a heavy rain it works quite well. I had a bit of an issue with soil clogging in one of the four tines but that was alleviated with an application of WD 40 during use. As you would expect, it does take some dedicated time and effort to do larger areas with a manual device, but as I said, it works. I did encounter a problem on my second day of use where one of the tines actually broke off at the weld point. I contacted the company on their website and they responded within a few hours and sent the replacement part (plus an extra!) within a few days.....can't ask for better support. ... show more

  • Wrenches Needed for Assembly
Size: Std Length Coring Tines with Container
Just a note on the instructions for future buyers. The instructions state wrenches needed for the bolts and nuts are 12mm, 14mm or Cresent wrench; no statement on the handle bolts except Phillip screwdriver. That is wrong use 13mm,12mm, on the main bolts and nuts; and 10mm combination wrench or open end for the lock nuts on the handle. I find the unit was well thought out in design; but short on lock nuts and flat washers(none) for the main large bolts used in assembly. The handle would be much more solid if the cutouts for the Phillip screw heads were not used. The handle assemble is only held on one side of the 2 section piece of the handle. The designer could have just drilled the holes in the handle: and used bent flat washers on each to make the handle much more solid. The Welding for the down tubes at the cart base is a machine weld and appears was well done. Takes about 30 minutes to assemble. Nice powder coating used on painting the product. I do notice some rusting taking place where the paint job did not complete cover the non galvanized steel. The plug collection box is a great feature to purchase,(keep those clay plugs out of the souls of the shoes); and seems well built and worth the extra $. Not sure how long the plug cutters are going to last since they are made of cold rolled steel, instead of case hardened steel. ... show more

  • Excellent engineering, wet lawns only
Size: Std Length Coring Tines with Container
I've paid a contractor to aerate our lawn the past several years. But now he's bought new equipment and can't make it through our breezeway to the back yard. As long as you follow all the directions, it will work very well. I needed less than 2 minutes aerating with one pair of tines until I was ready for the advanced two pair of tines advanced aeration. Once I used the 4 cores at once, I had to step on the aerator with my full weight and shake it slightly left-to-right to get it to enter fully through the soil. As long as you're prepared to break a sweat this is an excellent choice for small lawns. It took me 90 minutes to aerate my 5000 sq ft backyard. All for less than the cost of a single trip from my [ex-]contractor. ... show more

  • It does what it's made to do
Size: Std Length Coring Tines without Container
I did a lot of research about different manual lawn coring aerators and took a chance on this one. I'm very pleased that it works just as I had hoped. It makes perfect little core plugs just like a good powered unit (albeit not nearly as fast). The tapered coring tubes eject the cores very well and I have not experienced any plugged tubes yet. Not sure I would want to do my entire 5000 sqft yard with it at one time, but it works great for small areas as needed. Like everyone else says, make sure the ground is moist so it will penetrate. The only issue I had is a very minor one, mud will build up on the bottom after 10 or 15 plugs and you have to scrape it off so it will continue to penetrate to full depth. I would definitely recommend this unit for it's intended purpose and I am completely satisfied with it. ... show more

  • Good for what it is!
Size: Std Length Coring Tines with Container
I got this to help the bald spots in my yard as well as help the height next to the curb. The actual operation of it works well but I think in order to to change the yard height, I'd have to do a LOT of of aeration to make any height difference, even over a year. This is really built well and works as designed but I likely wouldn't buy it again. Edit to review: This has held up well over the summer, very sturdy and well built, however it just doesn't remove enough at a time for my use case. Also, if one of the prongs gets a little dirty on the inside, it keeps getting clogged and it needs to be washed out before you can really use it again. ... show more

  • Takes some getting used to
Size: Std Length Coring Tines with Container
This thing works as advertised. In my experience, the most important part of using this device is getting your lawn to the correct saturation. You don't want it too soggy, and soil that's too dry won't allow the corers to go into the soil at all. It takes a little experimentation to get the lawn to the goldilocks wetness. You also have to work hard actually punching this into the ground. Once you figure it out it's easier but still a lot of work to do a large section of grass. I do about 200sf in a day before I've had enough. But it does the job when the ground is prepped properly, and the core collector is a must. Otherwise you stomp on the cores, which then end up as mud clumps all over. The assembly instructions were not great. The aerator is fairly well built. I would advise actually following the recommendation in the instructions and use it with two corers first so you can get used to how it functions and then add the other two. Using it with four aerators is definitely harder than with two, but it goes faster. Lastly, be prepared to have to clear jams from the plugged up aerators once in a while. They provided a tool that works pretty well, but I use it with a rubber mallet too. All in all, I'd buy it again if I had to. It only got 4 stars because it will rust if not cleaned and dried properly. That seems ridiculous to me. Also, as mentioned, the instructions could have been much more clearly written. ... show more
