  • [UPDATE 2] Just works!
I bought a 2560x1440 monitor (BenQ BL3200PT) a few months ago to use with several computers connected to a 2560x1600-capable DVI KVM switch. Unfortunately, I realized after-the-fact (with help from BenQ and Dell tech support) that the DVI ports on the darned Dell E-Port port replicators are only wired for single-link, even though the video cards and on-board DVI ports on all three of my laptops supported dual-link DVI (and work great when connected directly to the KVM switch, without the port replicators). Long story short, I ended up with a cumbersome mixture of DVI and DisplayPort connections to the monitor. As a result, switching screens required changing inputs on both the KVM switch and the monitor - a total of 7 clicks, and taking my hands off the keyboard - instead of just using the KVM hotkey sequence. I recognize that there are bigger problems in the world than this, but considering the dozens of times per day that I switch screens, it was driving me crazy. So, after a bit of research, I decided to get an active DisplayPort > DVI Dual-Link adapter for the one machine that needs it the most. These are expensive, but still less than what a DisplayPort version of my current KVM switch would cost ($500+). I've used many StarTech products in the past, know them to be of the highest quality, and have been entirely satisfied with my experiences with them, so this unit was a natural choice. I'm pleased to say that StarTech delivers another excellent win with this adapter. I plugged it in, booted my machine, and it just worked! The video quality is indistinguishable from the original direct DisplayPort connection. I even downloaded and watched a 1440p video and watched it over a direct DisplayPort connection and over this DisplayPort > DVI adapter, and couldn't tell the difference between the two. I've only had this installed for an hour, but it couldn't be any better. As long as it doesn't break, this is a perfect product for my needs. [UPDATE 2016-07-15] I've been using the adapter for a week or so now, and it's still generally working well. I have encountered a problem that occurs a few times each day, and that I haven't been able to fix. Specifically, I have my (Windows) machine configured to turn the displays off after a few minutes if I'm not actively using it. I have several computers, so I'm frequently working on another one, thus allowing the one with this adapter to have it's screens time out and turn off. When switching back to the machine with the adapter and waking the screens up, sometimes (20% of the time?) the monitor that's connected to this adapter looks all funky. It looks like it's running at a low resolution, but it's not; all the icons/windows/text are the correct size, it's just blotchy like someone ran a filter over an image to obscure the details. Interestingly, if I press PRINT SCREEN to grab a screenshot, the screenshot is full-resolution, and looks normally when I paste it into an image editing program. So, I think this is definitely a video signal issue, and not something with the computer-side graphics. I can fix the problem by 1) switching to another port on the KVM switch and back, or 2) turning the monitor off and back on. Both workarounds fix the problem 100% of the time, but it takes a few seconds. It's not a dealbreaker, but it's certainly annoying. I removed one star because this issue never occurred before I introduced the adapter into the mix. But, I can't definitively attribute it to the adapter, either, because it's only one of several changes that I made at the same time (and can't test separately, for technical reasons). It could be the adapter, KVM switch, monitor... or maybe my conclusion above is wrong and it really is a problem with the graphics card. At any rate, for the price of the adapter, I'm willing to live with this issue (for now) because my other alternative is a very expensive KVM upgrade. I still recommend the adapter for folks looking for this type of solution. [UPDATE 2016-07-29] The behavior of the adapter seems to be getting more unpredictable as time goes on. Since the last update, I find that the screen looks fuzzy after 1) waking up the displays after my laptop has turned them off (per my Windows 7 Power Options settings), and 2) switching to the machine with the adapter via my KVM switch. As before, I can fix this by 1) turning the monitor off/on, or 2) switching to another machine and back again on the KVM. Additionally, the monitor to which the adapter is connected will randomly go blank for several seconds. This is new behavior, and occurs once every day or two. My configuration is the same (except for routine OS updates) since I first installed the adapter. The only thing I can think of that may be affecting it is the heat. It's been hot (mid-high 80's in the office), so perhaps that's causing trouble? Still, I feel the metal body of the adapter with my hand from time-to-time and it's only slightly warm - much cooler than even my cell phone if the screen has been on or battery has been charging for a while. I'm subtracting another star because the original fuzziness problem is becoming more frequent, and because of the new screen blanking issue. As for a recommendation? Knowing what I know now, that's tough. All else being equal, I'd rather have this adapter than not. But, the price of a native DisplayPort KVM is looking more attractive in light of these stability issues. This is still an OK piece of hardware. Future buyers should just be aware that it's not the same as a native DisplayPort connection, at least for me. ... show more

  • Not HDCP Compliant - Static
If you are using an NVIDIA graphics card and the reason for looking for a product like this is to support your Dual Link DVI monitor from a card that now has no DVI output, keep in mind that this will register as an active repeater. You can see that under the HDCP status in the Nvidia Control Panel, this will cause a yellow flag. It works from a technical level, but certain programs or websites which monitor HDCP compliance for digital copyrights will detect that the display you use this with is non-compliant, and while that service is running whatever display it is will change from a clear picture to rainbow static. You can still see the programs on it, but its very annoying and intentionally so. The big one is Netflix for me. If Netflix is playing in a web browser, even if its on one of my other HDCP compliant monitors, the monitor using DVI will go to static for as long as Netflix is open in the browser. Close Netflix and the monitor will go back to normal immediately. You can disconnect either the Displayport or the USB power plugs from your PC once Netflix or the other offending programs change it to static, and it will go back to normal - but it will automatically revert the next time the automated HDCP check is done which is roughly 30 minutes. If those limitations are a deal breaker for you, then don't purchase this. I have a 1440p panel and thus did not want to use a passive adapter like a direct DP to DVI cable, but as those are less than $10 it may be worth trying before you commit to this. ... show more

  • Worked great just not with my monitor Acer GN246HL
I used this adapter with an Acer GN246HL to get the full 144hz refresh rate after replacing my GPU. It was easy to use and I did get the full 144hz refresh rate. The main issue I had was with the monitor the screen would go blank for a quarter/half a second randomly. After it happened a few times I decided it wasn't worth keeping it so I returned it. Maybe a more expensive adapter wouldn't have this issue or maybe it is just the monitor. I ended up upgrading my monitor to a different one. TLDR: Worked well just not with the Acer GN246HL ... show more

  • Maintains High Resolution
I upgraded some old graphics cards that no longer had DVI-D. I was struggling to find a converter, cable or adapter that would allow me to go from Display port or HDMI to the 2560x1600 resolution. This adapter did it and allowed me to continue using my older high res monitor on the newer generation graphics cards. ... show more
