  • Good but....
Update: I did purchase a small usb 3 doc to plug my headset and camera into to address my issue below and it did work allowing the the kvm switch to just share one camera and headset between two computers. However, Star Tec can avoid this need by simply adding another USB 3 input or maybe even a few more???!!! Original post: I looked and I looked at KVM switches and I landed on this one because they are a known company that frankly provides a solution to things you sometimes didn't even know were a problem. First, this is a switch and you only get a switch no bundling of cables in the package, you get the switch and the power supply so it a byoc (bring your own cables) purchase which is fine. It is an all-metal case and feels substantial so it should be well built with good passive cooling. I'm running a work laptop and my home desktop off of it. If you want dual laptop monitors you will need a laptop hub that supports dual monitors as you must have two inputs from each computer to get dual monitors from this device. The good--- Hooked it all up and it just works. The bad--- I need a camera for both set ups and was trying to make it so that I would use this hub for my human input devices but the only way to get the camera to show up on both computers is to use the front USB 3 input and as there is only one you need to choose do you use it for your headset/mic or for the camera. I opted to use it for my headset as I did not want two headsets sitting on my desk to go back and forth. I have a camera hooked up to each computer with one sitting on each monitor in my dual set up for now. I have purchased a USB 3.0 hub to hook into the input on this KVM switch but have read that some people have gotten that to work and others have not. No A/B switching from your keyboard hot keys or your mouse on this switch which for me is fine and it sits neatly on the side of my desk but if you are looking to hide the switch get a different switch. For the price, I would like to see a few more USB 3 inputs on it so I can hook up both a headset and my camera or make it so the USB 2 on the back of the switch would support headsets and camera inputs. Right now I can only get the USB 2 on the back to support the keyboard dongle ... show more

  • Good quality KVM switch
A friend of mine recommended this KVM switch. I was using a CKL switch before, but the USB ports on the CKL started falling apart and I started having connectivity issues. This unit is very nice (so far), and supports two different machines. One machine is connected via a Dell D6000S docking station (that dock uses 2 DP ports and 1 HDMI), the StarTech only has HDMI ports, so plan accordingly which additional cables you'll need for each machine. StarTech does not provide any cables with the switch, except the power adapter of course. Generally speaking, if you're running dual monitors and have two machines with at least two ports each, you'll need 6 HDMI cables, again, depending on the machines. In some cases, you'll need an DP to HDMI cable. Now for the fun part, the KVM communicates with your machines via "SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen 1) Type-A male to Type-B male. Here is a link to the cables: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01241Q16Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I could not find these via 'Prime', so I would suggest ordering two of these ahead of time. These are the recommended cables in the StarTech Quick Start Guide. Otherwise, setup was a breeze and everything is working beautifully. ... show more

Has worked flawlessly for me for nearly a year, and I swap systems multiple times a day.

  • Works great
I had an older DVI model made by this company. Worked great. Unfortunately DVI only goes up to 1920x1200. I upgraded monitors recently and had to upgrade the kvm. This unit works as expected and am very happy with it.
