I was hesitant about buying this unit because of reviews stating bad packaging and dead in arrival items. Still order it. After adding oil to the engine and vibrator, it started at the first attempt. I have been using it for a while and still working good. The manual is not that clear about what kind of oil to use in the vibrator. However. The 100ml bottle that comes whit the compactor seems to be what is needed. There is no oils for the engine in the package. I am using 10w 30 on both the engine and the vibrator. So far it is good.

For a lightweight 14” compactor, the Stark 7hp 5500MAX provides a powerful and HEAVY DUTY result! Easy to set-up and start, in-spite of some conflicting documentation. Excellent value for the cost and features. The forward moving action makes it so easy to maneuver with just one finger. It even goes UPHILL (at a slower pace) but does an amazing job compressing up to 3” rock with minimal effort. The built in wheels make it easy to transport on medium to hard solid surfaces and is lightweight enough to pick up with some effort for transport/loading, if needed. Customer Support, while mostly done via email is actually pretty prompt and accurate on providing proper support for troubleshooting issues. BE ADVISED: For those in higher elevations (>3k’) NAR for carb, just PAY ATTENTION to ensuring CLEAN Spark-plug as fuel burns richer at higher elevations and may foul the plug, precluding the engine from starting on pull.

This machine is very nice and very compact and small and does the job okay. The bad thing is that it leaks oil from the vibration box. Otherwise works well. Only works good for small jobs

When I finally received the second box of 2, it looked liked the manufacturer or shipping company used the box for batting practice. The package was falling apart, open at three ends and loosely taped back together as if the driver lost the box on the freeway. Indeed, there was a trail of parts from the street to my porch where the box was finally laid to rest. At this point, I didn't hold out much hope, but decided to try and piece the machine together. I opened one of the boxes and the first thing I noticed was a crushed air filter, a bent rod of some sort, and a damaged handle. Nonetheless I continued with my effort to piece the plate compactor together. I opened the instructions supplied with the machine and it was virtually unreadable. Fortunately (sort of), I was able to find the owner's manual online with images that I could actually see. This was hopeful. However, once I dug into the instructions they were virtually useless. Amusingly, one of the instructions was written as follows, "Note you should adjust the position to make the dust shield plate in the right way." This was followed by "Screw up four M12 locknut to fix the engine support plate." Well something was screwed up alright. So, after numerous trips to the hardware store to try and find replacements for missing bolts and nuts, I finally had the machine assembled only to find out the engine operation manual was as cryptic as the owners manual. I then spent the next two hours trying to start the engine to no avail. Perhaps it is all my fault as I was dumb enough to by an expensive piece of equipment from an online retailer.

Got this for pothole repair tamping bagged asphalt mix and it works great for that purpose. If you're working on a slope, stand on downhill side of slope when using and it will be easy to use I found out and spray some WD-40 on plate before using for asphalt. A nice little machine and a great value in my opinion. I have used bigger and heavier machines but at 77 I like this size better and the wheels make it easy to move around.

Items arrived in two cardboard boxes, one of which was torn with oil stain spreading over half of the package. There were loose screws and nuts inside. I was afraid certain parts would be lost. Fortunately everything was in there. There are two instruction manuals, one for the engine and one for the overall unit such as assembly, operating and maintenance instructions. The lighter colored assembly instruction was the original one from the manual. It is left-right inversed. I had to take a photo of it using my phone and then performed a left-right mirror image edit before I printed it out. The assembly diagram also has an errors. For example, item 35 (external hex bolt ), item 36 (flat gasket) and item 37 (flange nut) do not go on the same side of item 38 (dust Shield). After I assembled the unit according the instruction, the bolt, nut and the flange fell off onto the ground during its first run. I took it apart and reasoned that the bolt should go onto the inside of the dust shield inside the belt cover housing rather than being outside as indicated in the assembly diagram provided. Fortunately, I was able to find all the items that fell off and fixed the problem. The rest of the manual were semi-helpful as the photographs included for assembling the units were not well positioned when the pictures were taken for guidance purposes. The lower handle unit, as shown in the photograph, arrived severely bent. Fortunately I was able to lay it down and hammered it with a 8-lb maul to straighten it for connecting it with the upper handle. The paint of the unit appeared to be chipped in several places. The packaging from China was very sloppy. The unit did start on the first pull after you added gasoline and motor-oil in it. It worked well and was able to self-propel up a 13-degree slope for asphalt repair compaction. The transportation wheels works by pulling or pushing, depending on the terrain. The unit itself has no clear label outside to indicate where was the fuel lock or direction of for speed control on the throttle lever. One must follow the instruction and worked at it with a try-and-see attitude.
