  • Works as advertised
Number of Items: 1
This product is the bee's knees, at least so far. I had a squeaky floor that's been driving me crazy for the last 6 months. Tried a few other screws, nails, shims etc, none worked really good. Came across this product, thought what the heck. One screw fixed the problem completely. Tricky part is finding the joist under the floor, but I bought a heavy duty stud finder and found it first time. Well worth the extra $35. Now I can walk over this spot on the floor and no noise at all. Not sure how it works through tile or hardwood, but for carpet it was everything it advertised itself. ... show more

  • Find the joist, then it’s magic
Number of Items: 1
This product is amazing, once you find the floor joists then this will work without a single issue. Trick is to use measurements and it may take 2-5 holes before you know which one it is. I recommend drilling the hole in with a screw, then test if the squeak is gone before snapping it off. Stud finders don’t work, i bought 3 from $20-$80 and none were accurate. They are a rough idea but measurements of 16 inches from a floor joists you know is there works like a charm. Also a floor joist is 1.5 inches of width so it’ll take a few holes before you hit the jack pot. ... show more

  • ENSURE that it is your subfloor that is squeaking; not your baseboard/wall to floor joint!!!
Number of Items: 1
There is nothing more annoying than a squeaky subfloor, especially in a house that you paid good money for. Imagine my surprise when our relatively new home ended up having the squeaks and groans of a turn of the century barn house. The main floor creaks were easily dealt with, as I had access to them via the basement. For the 2nd floor squeaks however, they were not as easy...initially. Let me first say that I have purchased this product twice. The first time around I was not impressed at all, and although it seemingly took care of my floor noise in the master bedroom for a day or two, the ruckus quickly returned and I was so angry that I returned the product. After spending several hours and putting tens of screws through your carpet, you expect the problem to be fixed. Lo and behold I eventually discovered that it was not the subfloor that was doing most of the squeaking, but rather the baseboard/wall to floor connection! (see image) Apparently over time it is very common for the fasteners that secure your walls to your floor to get a little loose, especially in climates with drastic temperature fluctuations. THIS problem is easily fixed by hammering shims in between your carpet and your baseboard...it really works!!! So please check and see if that is the problem before you decide that this product doesn't work. On to my review... The system itself is pretty straightforward and the kit comes with everything you might need to be successful. These screws really DO break off under the carpet & padding and you will never know they are there! I have very close pile berber carpeting (see image) and I had no issues. Just make sure that you drive the screw down until there is only barely enough room to get the break-off tool onto the head of the screw and I promise you that you will be fine. Everything seems to be of high quality and I haven't had issues with anything breaking. Protip: When using the floor joist finder screws (there are two), make sure that you alternate every couple uses because they can get extremely hot and would probably break if used repeatedly many times in a row in a short amount of time. Finding the squeaks is generally easy. Finding the floor joists themselves can be a little trickier. Get down on your hands and knees in the general vicinity of the squeaks and press down hard with your fists moving perpendicular to your floor joists...eventually you will get to a point where when you press down, it will be silent! This is probably where your floor joist is and you have moved on to another piece of subfloor. Then you can use your joist finding tool to make sure that you are on the joist. The kit explains exactly how to use them properly. Keep in mind that you will probably need to use at least 2-3 screws for every squeak, as it is difficult to exactly hit the edge of the piece of subfloor and secure directly into the joist at the perfect spot. You can use a tape measure to get the distance from the wall to where your floor joist is (going perpendicular once again) and drive a few screws into the joist, staying as close to the edge of that piece of subfloor as you possibly can. I usually vary by 1/2 inch in either direction to make sure that at least 1-2 of my screws is in the exact position it needs to be. When snapping off the screw heads make sure that the screw is driven in AT LEAST as far as the tool will let you go. Going a little further will not hurt anything; but make sure you have some vice grips handy to snap the screw head off if you'd like to go a little deeper than the tool will allow. I generally go another full rotation sans tool very slowly to make sure I'm getting the best contact possible. I can also still use the tool to snap off the screw head going to that depth. YMMV. All in all, this kit successfully quieted many of my random squeaks throughout the house. Some are still there, but are so faint that only I would notice them; which I think is an acceptable solution considering I did not want to have to pull up carpet to re-secure and entire subfloor. This kit is not 100% effective, but is probably 80-90% effective at quieting your typical subfloor squeaks and noises; which I think is fantastic. O'Berry has done a very good job with this innovative kit. ... show more

  • Truly Amazing When it Works! And of Course Some Tips...
Number of Items: 1
First, a few tips/thoughts no usage: * An adjustable-torque drill is a critical. I was using one on "10" out of 20, and successfully drove in over 40 screws before I made a huge mistake. One screw hit some resistance, so I instinctively turned up the torque to drive it home, only to immediately snap off the top of the screw. Whereas every other screw's head had broken off cleanly way below the carpet pad, this one stuck up above the carpet and was a major hazard. Thankfully, it was easily removed with a massive pair of vice grips by aligning them with the shaft of the screw, clamping down on it, and slowly twisting. After adjusting the torque back down, I had no further problems. This makes me suspect that using an old-style drill without the adjustment would be a recipe for disaster! * You may or may not find the joist finder useful. In my case, the bit gripped 2+ inches into the floor no matter where I drilled, yet the spots measured from the floor vents following the directions were the ones that made the difference. In other words, the joist finder would have you believe I live atop one giant joist. Sadly, a quality stud finder was of no help either, so have a measuring tape handy! * Using scotch tape really does keep the screws from getting stuck in the carpeting. I was worried that the scotch tape would be left sticking out of the carpet after removing the screw, but found it removed very cleanly if, after snapping off the top of the screw with the supplied tool, the tool was rotated as it was slowly pulled away from the floor. Now, a normal review: After moving into a top-story carpeted apartment, I soon found that several of the most high-traffic areas gave out squeaks that were like nails on a chalkboard. As a renter, I didn't want to invest heavily in renovating the place, but this kit was cheap enough that I decided to give it a try. I'm glad that I did! The kit comes with 50 screws, which may or may not go far. Interestingly, where the screws worked most effectively were on spots in the middle of rooms. There was one room that was so squeaky that everyone avoided it, and it was completely silenced with a half-dozen screws! I had similar success with different squeaky spot in the corner of another room only a few feet from the walls using about a dozen screws. For what it's worth, it took about a minute to tape a screw, align it, drive it in, and remove its head. Where this approach seemed to fall short was for squeaks emitted near walls. In both instances when I tried to quiet such squeaks, using 15+ screws did little, if anything. I blanketed the areas in screws so I have no doubt I hit at least some joists, and I also had an assistant help weigh down the floorboards, yet I still didn't have much luck. Overall, I was very pleased with the kit. It didn't do much for the near-wall squeaks, but I truly doubt that anything short of ripping up the flooring would be effective for them. Furthermore, those spots are easy enough to avoid stepping on, whereas the huge problematic areas in the middle or rooms that the kit did fix were unavoidable, so I'm giving it five stars. The approach isn't perfect, but the kit's shortcomings aren't the result of poor design or manufacture, so I'm very pleased overall. Hope this helps! ... show more

  • Worked well enough, but not a Long-Term Fix
Number of Items: 1
Used this in my 1953 Florida bungalow with original hardwood floors. It did reduce a couple of the worst squeaks temporarily, but a few months later, I’m starting to hear some minor squeaks creeping back in. I made about a dozen holes to install the screws, which I then had to fill and colormatch, so it’s not exactly mess-free. It’s definitely cheaper and less invasive than hiring a flooring company to shim from below—if that’s even an option—but don’t expect a permanent fix. A decent short-term solution, just go in with realistic expectations. ... show more
