  • The most superior version of the original series I've ever seen!
I've loved this series since I was a child. I've owned VHS and DVD versions of this series. This Blu-ray version of Speed Racer is the very best I've ever seen. The lines and colors are amazingly sharp/crisp. It's not without minor (and I do mean minor) imperfections, however, it is about as perfect as 1967 animation could be in 2017. As an added bonus, the opening credits display the original english version title graphics, not the computer generated red and yellow graphics shown on the 1990's television release and DVD release of the 2000's. Again, this is the most superior version of Speed Racer that this life-long fan has ever seen. I am very pleased with my purchase. ... show more

  • Here Comes Speed Racer ... To Blu Ray
EDIT Statement from Funi about the issue can be found on line. It basically says that it was a printing error on their part. The DVD release does not have this error, and that there will be a Colectors Edition of Speed Racer as well as Mach GoGoGo later this year. So if you have not ordered you may want to hold off for a CE I just received my copy in the mail so lets take a look, and before I start I want to get it out of the way that this is the English Dub. The original is said to be coming out at a later date. That said lets continue. The set comes with a slip cover where everything on the front besides speed racer has a shimmer to it. The backs seem to be identical. On the outside of the package details state that the discs are Region A. There are two audio tracks both are Dolby True HD. One is English two channel mono, and the other is Japanese 2.0. However after looking at the Set Up Menu in Disc One there are no Audio choices it is just listed as English The video is listed as 1080P HD Native in 4.3 ratio. It also has English SDH. Inside the package there are pictures printed on the inside of the jacket, but it is not a reverse-able cover. All five discs contain the same art work. The discs have 12 episodes each except for the last one. There is no insert or booklet inside the case. Playing the first episode the the Trans Lux and copyright information seem to be gone. However the white Speed Racer logo is used. I am not sure if and how the ending was different between versions to compare those. There is a Play All, Episodes, and Set Up I looked at Disc One and Disc Five and could not find any special features. a little insert and/or some special features would have put it over the top for me. Skimming through the first episode visuals seem rather clean and sharp. There is of course a little mark here and there, but that is to be expected with how old everything is. It still looks really great. Overall pretty happy at first go over. ... show more

  • Picture looks incredible
I’ve only watched the first episode but wow, it looks great. Old animation can sometimes fall victim to over-heavy digital noise reduction used to get rid of scratches and dust. That produces sharp images but can also wipe out parts of the original drawing, resulting in something that has no trace of age, but looks unnatural and more like computer art than a thing hand drawn. That’s not the case here. They’ve left in some minor age related noise in order to get a truer image. Definitely the way to go. It’s a joy to watch, just visually. The colors are saturated and vivid, as well. I had seen a standard definition streaming version of several episodes some time ago, and seeing it this way on this blu-ray is a like a completely different experience. ... show more

  • Racing down memory lane . . .
One of the prototypes of Japanese animation. It’s obviously a children’s cartoon, but unlike it’s American counterparts there’s a clear moralistic message within the stories that reflect the best aspects of Japanese culture. Fair play and empathy are stressed, as well as self sacrifice in the name of family obligations. The premise of all the episodes are, of course preposterous, but that’s what makes them fun. The names of the villains and other ancillary characters are hilarious— Ace Ducie, Mr Fastbucks, Snake Oiler, Inspector Detector, President Montebank etc Let the episodes run while working out or doing household chores. Speed Racer makes everyone smile. ... show more

  • I wonder if David Lynch was a fan
The Racer family would be moderately proud of the delivery speed. Looked and played great. Admittedly I am old, a fan of the show from my childhood in the 60s & 70s. I still find a great amount of entertainment in this series. The show reflects many of the best qualities of its' time without many of its' less appealing traits. We are provided with some strong female characters & a wide variety of cultures & nationalities, almost always treated with respect. I wish I had written or otherwise found a way to thank the creators & talent that produced an influential & much loved part of my childhood. However, since I lauded the social equality & open-minded sensibility of the series earlier, if you feel you would be offended by occasional things like a nemesis named Ali Ben Schemer or a slapstick segment involving an overweight person, it may be best to avoid this & almost anything else produced by humans ;) Ohhh! Ahhhhh! ... show more

  • You Can't Race Home Again
I loved this show as a kid but watching the complete series again as an adult was torture.

  • Always loved it as a kid
I grew up on this stuff. Always loved it as a kid, can laugh about the cheesiness as an adult. It’s got all the original episodes in full 1080P quality and great sound. From the theme song, the Mach 5 spring noises, to the “Ohhhhh!” vocals that every character makes is a true gem. The fact that this series dates back to the late 60s is amazing. If you’re a fan of cool looking cars, nostalgic trips up the wazoo and original anime noises, you’ll love Speed Racer. ... show more
