Description

The Spear and Jackson neverbend professional digging spade is designed to meet the exacting standards of landscapers and professional gardeners alike. This spade easily exceeds the BS3388 load test and features a solid forged carbon steel blade and long socket for strength and durability. The blade and socket have been finished with a hammer finish powder coat for improved protection against rust, scratches and humidity, while the hardwood shaft has been weatherproofed for durability and to extend the life of the spade. The shaft is finished with a metal MYD handle. Spear and Jacksonโ€™s foundations were laid in 1760, since the beginnings centuries of experience and enhancement have resulted in the materials and development expertise that resides within the company and continuous enhancement is at the heart of the company's ethos. This thing is built like a tank! It has the look and feel of a professional tool! I have absolutely no concerns that it will fail at the handle/head joint like the box store forks. It's not perfect, however. It is not built for tall people and for a 6' person, it could use another 6" of handle length. The tines are up to the challenge but set at a somewhat weird angle for breaking ground. Purchased this to replace my old standby favorite that my burly son broke. It is sturdy. It is good. I expect it to last a very long time. Nevertheless, nitpicking, I loved the old fork that had a fiberglass handle which was lightweight and smoothly set shaft into the metal fork end and had a plastic, but smooth D handle. The tines on my old fork were also just a bit slimmer and finely wrought such that they just slipped into the soil easily yet never bent on stones. If I could only find another of those! This one is an adequate replacement, but the handle is not as smooth in the hand, nor is it as light. ... show more

Every fork I considered at a home center or farm store felt flimsy--particularly at the joint between the tines and the handle. At ~$40 a fork, I didn't want something that would last half a day. So, compelled by the reviews here, I ordered one of these in hopes that it'd be an improvement. ...it was. First, this thing is beautiful. It's extremely well built. And It's sturdy as hell. I used it to aerate 3,000 sqrt feet of lawn without any trouble [from the fork... my lower back thought otherwise]. And, despite being several heads above the rest, it rang it at the same price as the farm/home center forks. I'm tall (>6') so would have appreciated a few extra inches of handle length, but digging forks are always short such that I can't count it's [standard ~30"] handle length against it. I bought this to clear out some planting beds around my house. My mom had a fork like this 40+ years ago when I was a kid and it was old and rusted then, but had the same welded fork and handle socket construction with a wood shaft and a steel bracketed wooden handle. It was old when she got it at a garage sale and she still used it for another 20 years. This Spear and Jackson digging fork has the same traditional quality construction designed to take years of use. Its heavy enough to sink right into the ground when you step on it. This isn't one of those lightweight plastic and stamped steel tools from the big box store where the fork comes loose and falls out of the handle.
