Ideal for verifying the spark pattern or the fundamental functionality of a plug. It is not the same as letting the plug sit on the cylinder head and turning the engine over, but this method works for simple tests that cannot be performed with a volt meter. The inside of a cylinder when the engine is running is a completely different environment. I find that this provides some peace of mind when installing new plugs, especially if they are difficult to reach, as I've had a few that are defective right out of the box.

Probably both, really. A spark plug firing without cylinder pressure is a whole different thing than firing inside the engine with the cylinder under 200PSI of compression. A bad plug will blow out under pressure with the current going to ground. With an oscilloscope to see this, a plug takes around 10Kv to fire. As a plug wears out, the gap increases and requires more and more voltage to spark. Once the conditions push the plug over the edge and you get a misfire. Unless the plug suffers some catastrophic damage, like a broken electrode, the plug will usually fire. What this does is no more than tell you if the plug could fire. I had a dirty old plug and ran it. While the spark was somewhat weak, it did spark. I opened the gap up to .200" and ran it. I could hear it sparking but it wasn't at the electrode to ground strap. It was firing inside the insulator. The spark was jumping from the insulator to the plug body. In this case, the current was taking the path of least resistance. The energy has to go somewhere, right? So that would be a misfire. In that case, the machine told me something was wrong in that case. Now, I do have a couple oscilloscopes and if I had an ignition problem, I would scope it before removing any parts. If I saw very high initiating voltage, I would then start checking parts to see where the problem is. Again, this machine just tells you if the plug will fire. For me, I could use this with the oscilloscope to check plugs and wires for high resistance. Yes, you can check the wire too. Just put the terminal end into the machine, put a plug on the wire, connect a ground to the plug and test away. I think it's more of a toy. I wouldn't ordinarily use such a device except maybe to compare one part to another to see if there are qualitative differences in the spark.

I have a lot of garden power tools and often need to diagnose ignition issues. I have other ignition diagnostic tools: one is connected between ignition coil and spark plug has a gas discharge bulb that flashes when coil voltage rises. But it only tests continuity between ignition coil and spark plug. Another tool is connected instead of spark plug and has variable gap between electrodes. That one solely tests ignition coil. I often saw issues especially with 2 strokes when coil works fine and when I clean plug I see the spark, but once I put it back and try to start nothing happens. I get plug out again and it is wet. With this tool it's much easier to see spark imperfections or discharge through cracked insulator or side spark from central electrode to carbon deposits on internal side of threaded jacket. You don't have to pull started and watch a weak spark from afar. With this tool you can insert 1 or 2 plugs into available ports and use potentiometer to find lowest voltage when you see stable discharge. Usually it is a range somewhere between 1 and 2 thousand volts under atmospheric pressure. Raising the voltage helps to identify issues with central electrode insulator and carbon deposits. Tool accepts many different spark plugs. Spacer washers are included for long automotive plugs. You can also cut shorter a shank of flat head machine screw and insert it into central terminal to use this tool for shorter 2-stroke spark plugs.

The media could not be loaded. I haven't had the chance to pull old plugs to do a side by side comparison, but if you look at the video I made using new plugs you'll see that this basically just applies voltage to give you a visual of the arc. The video I supplied is a new plug, if that's not what yours does it's probably time to change it. The instructions are really basic but clear, and it comes with a few washers should you need it. You can do two plugs at a time with this thing, which is cool I guess. You don't need this tool, but it's kind of nice to bench test instead of bending over a fender. So, it works and does what it advertises, but it's a nice to have/flex tool and not something that's going to save you a ton of time necessarily. Not something crucial every mechanic needs.

I ordered this tester because I was having ignition issues with a 2k9 Nissan Sentra, and anyone who has ever worked on one how much of a pain in the rear it is to swap out spark plugs. So, rather than continually pull plugs and test them the conventional way, I figured I'd give this tester a try. I am very glad I did. This little gadget works like a charm on any standard spark plug ( 2k5 Motorcraft plug test pictured ) , and takes the guesswork, and more importantly inadvertent shocks, out of testing plugs. My only regret is that I didn't order one sooner. 5 stars!

This does the job and the plug(s) would spark but the control dial 95% of the time only turns it on to full speed it seems. Sometimes given time it will then work slower, but ran for over two minutes and still did not work right. Not great for short sparkplugs either like those used in small engines,etc. would be nice if was universal. I sort of think something like this should be able to as an option or totally run on battery power.
