Description
Limite 180gm vinyl LP pressing including download. 2013 solo album from the Roots/Americana singer/songwriter. Southeastern contains 12 new Isbell compositions and they are the most personal songs of self-reflection and discovery he has written to date. By no means is Southeastern a wholly solemn offering. Tracks such as 'Stockholm' (with Kim Richey) and 'Traveling Alone' (with Amanda Shires) offer laid back tempos and memorable choruses, while 'Flying Over Water' and 'Super 8' are strong reminders of Isbell's deep roots in rock. The poetic and deeply intimate lyrics are the common thread that runs throughout the album.

Continues to be Versatile and Amazing
This is how it should be done. Jason Isbell has once again shown how he can be very versatile in his song writing. Every song on this CD has a different feel. Every song is very evocative. There is not one song that I do not enjoy listening to on this CD. There is a peice of his life in every song lyric. Even when a song is not in particular about him you can still tell a verse or a sentence somewhere in each song comes from life experience he has had and the lyrics are witty, well thought out, smart. His delivery of the inflection and arrangement is nothing short of brilliant. This man is one of the finest song writers in this country presently. I have been a fan ever since I heard one of his all time greats "Outfit" ( on Drive By Truckers DECORATION DAY). Every song that I have heard from his "Truckers" recordings to his first solo( Sirens of the Ditch) to his two 400 UNIT Cd's and this latest solo is fantastic. This man just cannot write a bad song. If you have not heard anything by this great musician get anything he has recorded YOU WILL NOT be disappointed. This you can tell is true 24 reviews on Amazon about this CD and all but 1 is FIVE STAR. Elsewhere in music mags and blogs the critics are raving. Versatile and Amazing. I have had the CD in my car's player since June 11th and just keep letting it play and start over since inserting it. He just keeps writing great songs. PERIOD.

A deeply personal masterpiece, laden with the best qualities of Isbell's art.
My adoration for Jason Isbell is no secret. It is rooted in his brilliantly folkloric southern sensibilities. His previous work, particularly his 400 Unit albums, listen like parables of the modern south, utilizing the iconic imagery for anyone below the Mason-Dixon but still reflective of something poignantly personal. While these elements are all present in SOUTHEASTERN, he has never produced a more intimate album. Isbell is confessional and reflective about his struggles with alcohol and cocaine, his reckless youth, and his transformative sobriety. And in typical fashion, he is both direct and allegorical depending on the song or the verse. Melancholy regret and remembrances do not dominate all tracks; there is also a celebration, as Isbell is clearly happy with who he has become- a sober man in love. For instance, COVER ME UP and TRAVELING ALONE tell the story of someone who has crossed a personal rubicon inviting hope and happiness into a darkened life. The shadow of that darkened life swirl around the setlist as the song LIVE OAK metaphorically discusses the elements of our past that haunt us using the canvas of American outlaw mythology. With the metaphor stripped away, YVETTE and SONGS THAT SHE SANG IN THE SHOWER seem to be deeply cutting experiences that expose moments of Isbell's reckless youth. In SONGS, Isbell's lyrical genius weaves a vivid story though the words are spartan- "On a lark, on a whim, I said there's two kinds of men in this world and you're neither of them. And his fist cut the smoke. I have an eighth of a second to wonder if he got the joke." The scene is painted, the brushstrokes few. Then, in the aftermath, a confessional- "In a room by myself. It looks like I'm here with the guy that I judge worse that anyone else. So I pace and I pray and I repeat the mantras that might keep me clean for the day." In SUPER 8, Isbell delivers the carefree, irresponsible country tinged rock and roll songs that harken back to his DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS days. The riches of Isbell's transformation do not only manifest in his lyrics; his wife, Amanda Shires, his obvious anchor in a storm of temptation, is a marked presence on the album. The sweeping violin, played by Shires, transforms the song NEW SOUTH WALES from a story about strangers in a strange land to an authentic English (via Austrailia) folk ballad. Nowhere is Isbell's gift of intelligence in language, metaphor, and imagery more polished that in STOCKHOLM and ELEPHANT, where he wrestles with falling in love and death respectively. Both songs layer innuendo, meaning and cliche within Isbell's typical narrative clarity. The album is a journey of reflection and change, so the fitting capstone is RELATIVELY EASY. This is the grown-up, sober Isbell seeing the big picture of life. Despite problems, personal demons, loss, and trivial irritations, things for Jason Isbell have become "relatively easy." I'll leave this hopefully analytical diatribe with perhaps my favorite turn of phrase in an album filled with them. It is indicative of the trials and redemption related in this masterpiece called SOUTHEASTERN- "A heart on the run keeps a hand on a gun. You can't trust anyone. I was so sure what I needed was more I'd shoot out the sun. Days when we raged, we flew off the page. Such damage was done. But I made through `cause somebody knew I was meant for someone."- COVER ME UP by JASON ISBELL

Jason Isbell Comes Into His Own.
I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Drive-By Truckers fan. I've lost count of how many times I've seen them live, and always really got a kick out of watching them perform Isbell's songs especially. Ever since Isbell and the Truckers parted ways a few years ago, I felt almost like he'd died; the Truckers didn't play his songs live any more (I assume out of respect). I heard a few of his solo songs, but they weren't really doing it for me, so I just had to settle for listening to his songs on previous DBT albums and concert bootlegs. Then I heard "Dress Blues" and decided to buy "Sirens of the Ditch," which I liked well enough to remember that the dude wasn't actually dead, but I didn't love it enough to keep it in my regular listening rotation. But now, after listening to "Southeastern" a couple of times through, I no longer think of him as "Jason Isbell, baby-faced former member of the Drive-By Truckers." He's now "Jason Isbell, baby-faced genius songwriter and all-around American musical treasure." (I really can't get over how young he looks, especially for how hard he's lived thus far. I think it's mostly jealousy, as I'm 31 and look 45.) The biggest difference I've noticed is how much he's dug back into storytelling in the songs on this album. "Elephant," "Songs That She Sang in the Shower," and "Yvette" are just beautiful works of storytelling. And the friendly ghost that haunts this album is Isbell's sobriety, which makes a lot of the songs more hopeful and at the same time more vulnerable. In particular, I love the opening track "Cover Me Up." It's a beautiful, simply constructed and produced song, and I like to think of it as a companion piece to "Goddamn Lonely Love," Isbell's closing track to DBT's "The Dirty South." Fantastic album. I feel like I need to go back and listen more to his other solo stuff now.

This is country? Then why don't I hate it?
This album gets everything right with regard to making fantastic music. Regardless of what genre you ascribe to this album, it does justice to music as an art-form. The lyrics are heartfelt and honest, and there is great respect for music inherent within Jason Isbell. It's not just some top-40 sludge that someone adds a steel guitar to and calls "country"... this is the real stuff. I don't like country... or at least what they try to pass off as country these days. But this harkens back to the old days when country music consisted of a country boy picking up a guitar and singing, creating stories for an audience, and being a part of the whole experience instead of being above it. There's simply a sincerity in this work that most other albums lack. I definitely recommend this album to anyone who appreciates quality singer-songwriter music. Regardless if your tastes are folk, country, rock, southern rock, whatever... you'll enjoy this album. Southeastern is Isbell's greatest work to date, and an album that I hope becomes infectious in the country music industry - it would be great to see more artists be true to their roots as Isbell has done with this album. *just a note: I never would've found this album if Marc Maron hadn't interviewed Isbell and had him sing at the end. I listened to the album on YouTube, then came here to buy it. Finding this was a total accident, but one that has been much to my benefit.

Simply unbelievably good
My God, where has this much talent been hiding? I know Jason had a career with Drive-By Truckers and then his own solo albums, but none of that prepared me for listening to this awesome collection of songs. From the opening acoustic guitar riff of Cover Me Up to the climactic chords of Relatively Easy, every song is impeccably crafted: beautiful melodies, strong singing, smooth harmonies, and lyrics that I hear in my head when I wake up the next day. Some songs are disturbing (the young man who is going to shoot the abusing father of a classmate, the girlfriend dying of cancer), self-lacerating about appetites ('Ybor City on a Friday night") and lamenting the lonely life on the road ('don't want to die in a Super 8'). Artists sometimes put out an album where every song is great, no lapses. The listener does not want to jump ahead. This is that kind of album. I put it in a class with Steve Earle's I Feel Alright and El Corazon, and Jamey Johnson's Guitar Song. And I am looking forward to Jason's next album. I have the vinyl version and the mix is excellent, all the instruments and voices in balance and nothing over-done. The vinyl also comes with a code to download the album for iTunes or whatever. Nice touch.

Isbell Continues to Excel
No one can deny that Jason Isbell wrote, sang, and played some great songs while with the Drive by Truckers. "Outfit" and "Goddamn Lonely Love" come quickly to mind. But, you are missing out on great music if you have ignored his three albums with the 400 Unit. All really strong and if you like a bit of DBT, get the live album. BUT, with this album, Mr. Isbell has exceeded his already outstanding output. All the songs on "Southeastern" are heartfelt, played great, and cover a wide range of feelings and life issues. They make you think. The overall feeling to me is melancholy, but with hope for happiness. "Super 8" has to be one of the best ever songs about a band (likely a second-tier opening act band) on the road. "Songs She Sang in the Shower" - you can place yourself right in the song. Isbell takes the day to day life and describes it in such a way as to make it extra-ordinary - gritty, heart-breaking, hopeful as the song requires. I would venture to call Mr. Isbell a poet, no doubt a title he would reject. His guitar playing has never been better and you can fully appreciate it as he plays all guitar parts on the CD. Great back-up band, including vocals by Kim Richey. Isbell is a genius deserving wider public recognition. Not unlike say, John Prine and Richard Thompson. Just a terrific CD that shows Jason continues to grow as an artist. Can't wait for the next one!

Good album with solid musicianship and honest lyrics - 3 and 1/2 stars
Jason Isbell is a talented guy who has survived his worst self-destructive tendencies. His recent music has been a chronicle of his journey to sobriety and love. A solid songwriter in the alt-country/Americana/roots rock tradition, he knows the conventions well. His years of experience show. Isbell delivers a passionate album that's honest and as often deeply personal as it is firey. However, he's keeping company in this genre with guys like Ryan Adams and Justin Townes Earle, and those are big shoes to walk next to. In that respect, Isbell is punching way above his weight. I give this album four starts because without a choice of three-and-a-half I'd rather go higher than lower on this one. I think it's a solid three-and-a-half star album and a fairly strong showing. I'm a sucker for tight Southern rock done well, and this delivers in those respects, right down to some strong slide work. The lyrics often delve into the realm of the trite, tired and overly-well-trod. He trades in cliches ("I realize how far I have to fall", he talks of his "lonely heart", etc.) and for a genre and a quality of production that puts the lyrics right up front, his strong and soulful voice carries the day where the lyrics can't. That's not the full package. Think too much about what he's saying and all the soul disappears in a cloud of smoke. Isbell does convey his experiences clearly and personally, but he fails to do so in a way we've not heard many times before. If you dig it for the music, it's what you think it will be: Solid, excellent musicianship that stays true to Southern rock and country/ alt-country tradition (I think there's enough alt-country road behind us to say that now.) But if you're looking for the kind of lyrical depth of Isbell's supposed peers, Mr. Adams or Mr. Earle, you won't find it here. There are no new ways of looking at the same old themes of heartbreak, hope, love, regret, roadside bars, struggles with addiction, or other concepts familiar to the landscape of this genre. He hits all the right points as he connects the dots, but fails to convince that he's doing more than just that.

Outstanding songs full of beauty, truth, and wisdom
Polished and precise without feeling slick, the producers and engineer wisely kept the texture spare to let Isbell's voice take center stage. Yet "spare" does not mean empty. The interplay of guitar and fiddle as well as the lyrical quality of the songs mean there are plenty of things for the ear to follow and enjoy. Full of Truth and Wisdom learned the hard way, nearly all of these songs tell a story in a sort of post-modern country/folk song way, set to more contemporary backbeat melodies. I found myself picking out interesting turns of phrase as I listened, something I almost never do in an age dominated by simplistic lyrics meant for commercial appeal. These are inventive and well-crafted. (And I marvelled at his ability to rhyme something with "benzodiazapine" without sounding forced.) These songs are so good, I'd be surprised if at least three of them aren't covered by other vocalists in the next few years. In particular, "Songs That She Sang in the Shower" could be done as a classic country song a la Kris Kristofferson or a new country traditionalist. "Super 8 Motel" channels Lynyrd Skynyrd and the whole Muscle Shoals vibe. You'll enjoy this album. It will captivate you at first listen. It's not what you'd put on for a party soundtrack-- it's not Drive By Truckers-- but you'll find yourself humming along as you listen with a friend or a beverage or two.
