As others have stated in their reviews, this is not something you are going to put out in your main living room where guests will actively judge it. It definitely isn't the nicest looking shelf you can buy. That being said, it is plenty sturdy, and "nice enough" for other areas of the house - I'm currently using it as an extra board game/tcg shelf in my office. Board games can get pretty heavy, and this things has handled them just fine. I've deducted a single star for two reasons - one, the thing is a pretty big pain to put together, and the instructions are not always very clear. I had to undo one of my steps because the instructions weren't clear about which way a piece needed to be facing - be sure to "look ahead" when putting this together (you could argue that's on me, but instructions should be idiot proof in some ways, and it's an easy fix). Two, mine didn't come with any indents for the nails, so I had to measure it out myself, which was a bit of a pain. For those who haven't built similar shelves, the back is usually a thin piece of cardboard-like thing that gets nailed onto the back. Usually, there are little indents to show you where the nails go. This was not the case for mine, though I do not know if I just got one that was messed up in that regard. If you are looking for something to increase storage in a side room of the house, I recommend these. Also, college dorms or college apartments, as you wouldn't feel bad just throwing these away once you are done with school or need to move out. ... show more

This is four and a half stars. Some dents, minor chips at edges and very very strong smell: might take a month for that to go away. But, the package is covered with instructions to call them if any parts are missing or damaged so I think they are really backing the product. Fortunately for me all of the parts are included. I needed it for a small corner in my office and the height was perfect as was the depth. For reference, the chocolate matches a color called "black-brown" in an Ikea desk that sits beside it: it is very dark but that is what I wanted. Overall, it is a decent product at a good price. Some assembly notes: the top panel 'A' has two small holes to connect the front piece. I didn't notice them during assembly so they ended up on top of the bookcase. Also, the back panel tears EASILY. I ended up turning it upside down so it wasn't noticeable from the bottom shelf that is hidden beside my desk; but then you lose the guideline for nailing the panel into the fixed shelf, again, a minor inconvenience. Assembly took under an hour for one person. I gained a better appreciation for IKEA products that don't smell like this, never have chips or dents and great great instructions, but they didn't have this piece in the height I wanted (theirs was 80"). If you don't want to assemble the furniture, don't buy online. This product took a couple hours to put together but I'm not complaining about that! This product was VERY well packaged. In fact, the delivery guy would've had to drop it several times to even come close to damaging it. The product also came with extra hardware in case you lose a piece / you break a piece. There is a fixed shelf as well as the top and bottom. These shelves connect to the sides with dowel rods as well as screws. You will need a screwdriver to put this together (not included). They warn against using power tools, but all I had was my electric so I just turned it off and used it like a manual. I definitely couldn't get the screws in without a tool (not so easy to twist) but I had NO problems using my screwdriver to get them in. Also, when you're screwing the shelf/top/bottom to the sides, don't forget the small pieces that go underneath the top and bottom! You need to make sure those go all the way into the slots on the side (as well as the shelves) before you screw in the sides. It is true, the back is a piece of folded cardboard. The side you see is stained like the wood so unless you're staring at it to see the "fold" you'll never know the difference for the price. The back attaches to the sides with an army of little nails, so do get your hammer ready. You may also want a ruler to measure the distance between the nails if you want to be precise. And you do hammer into the fixed middle shelf so make sure to line up that row of nails so you don't end up just pounding through the cardboard and miss the shelf entirely. Overall I'm very pleased with this product. It's ever-so-slightly wobbly but when I get a chance I'll put some more felt or something underneath one of the feet and I'm sure that will fix that.
