  • Great device for clarity
Style: CS50 Left Ear
These should be more well known. The fact that they boost hearing and function as an effective headset for my phone is awesome. My hearing loss is pretty moderate and I have tinnitus. These devices work to amplify sound in the direction you’re looking at and they have a bit of equalization going on. When they shut off, I can still hear, but everything sounds muddier, or dull. For me, it means I can make out the words more clearly when I’m wearing them. I get about 12 hours out of a new battery, which slowly degrades over 6 to 10 months. When they get to about half their original life I buy a new set. In my opinion the earpiece case could be a little more robust, I’ve broken a couple. Customer service patched me up a couple times, they were great. I love being able to take calls without dragging the phone out of a pocket and they’re perfect for podcasts and audio books since they don’t require stereo. I like them and I hope they keep improving them. ... show more

  • and I will be only too happy to update this review when that happens
Style: CS50 Left Ear
So this review is for the App and the Soundworld CS50. At this point I'm giving the combo 3 stars, but with a few improvements, that rating could be a lot higher. I hope they are made, and I will be only too happy to update this review when that happens. My hearing is generally OK, but in those typical situations where there’s a lot of background noise, or when someone with a voice within a certain pitch range is not directly facing me, I can miss part of what’s being said. For some time I've been looking for a Bluetooth device I could use as my everyday iPhone earpiece, and double as a personal sound amplifier on those occasions when it's needed. It seemed like such a logical product, but until now, it didn’t seem to exist. Overall the CS50 hardware does that job reasonably well, despite a couple of issues, but the software is really marginal. I use the CS50 as my only phone headset, even though the company acknowledges that isn't what it is primarily designed to do. For that reason, it lacks some of the more sophisticated features of dedicated devices, e.g., noise cancellation, voice commands, announcements, etc. Battery life is good, and I find it more comfortable and stable than the headsets I used before. The main complaint for the hardware when used with the phone is volume. It simply isn't loud enough in many situations. Ironically my personal sound amplifier has me saying "what?" or "Huh?" on phone calls far more often than I'd like. When I’m in a quiet room it’s fine, but it needs higher volume in many public settings. Maybe it’s my imagination, but it seems like I can turn it up louder as an amplifier, so I don’t understand why I can’t for the phone. As a personal sound amplifier, the hardware seems to do a reasonably good job, but the sound quality is sometimes marginal and can sound tinny or distorted. Because high frequency hearing loss is probably the most common issue, those frequencies are sometimes emphasized too much. But this is where the failings and limitations of the App begin. For starters, the App’s interface is really primitive compared to almost every other app I use. The frequency adjustments are limited to 3 bands: Treble, Mid and Bass. I don’t know of any other modern equalizer software that does not give more flexibility. For that reason, the adjustments are fairly primitive, and the absence of any graphical representation of the sound curve also makes it very hard to understand and work with the two other “tuning” options the App purportedly provides. Thee are two other settings pages in the App. One consists of three selections called “Every day,” “Restaurant,” and “Entertainment.” Restaurant claims to emphasize directional microphones for sounds in front of you, and rejects unwanted sounds. Entertainment apparently increases low frequency response. But there is no visual representation of the characteristics of those settings, nor, it appears, can they be modified or adjusted. Furthermore, it is not clear how they interrelate with the equalizer settings, or whether they override them entirely. This becomes a bigger mystery—and annoyance—when you add in the selections on the “Personalize” tab. You can go through a mini hearing test which presumably determines what types of compensation you need. But there are also three “Presets” which presumably can be set to any combination of equalizer settings. But they don’t appear to remember those settings, and they don’t seem to allow you to include one of the environment choices as well. As far as I can tell they are basically wiped out whenever the App starts up again, and while they could be useful, they really aren’t. (BTW, I wonder if it is feasible to use the capabilities of the multiple mics to also do some noise cancellation for phone use?) Here are some other things you can’t do. First of all, there are times one doesn’t want the amplification on at all, but do want to use the device with the phone. For instance, when you are by yourself the amplification can be really annoying because everyday sounds, e.g. rustling of paper, footsteps, etc., are magnified, and serve no useful purpose. The App should have the ability to toggle personal amplification on and off. That would probably make battery life even better. Another feature that would be extremely helpful, is using the phone as an external microphone. Suppose you’re sitting at a table with a bunch of people. Wouldn’t it be a really helpful option to put the phone on the table between everyone and have that microphone be one of the input sources? Finally, this is an App that positively cries out for an Apple Watch App. Assuming you could really get the presets to work, adjusting volume, muting the amplifier or the mic, and switching from one pre-set to another, would be simple things on the watch. Using the phone for such basic things is cumbersome and unnecessary. One last note. I wrote much of this in an email to customer service over a week ago. While the folks are very helpful when you call them, I never got an answer to my email. ... show more

  • Love it but my batteries not working right
Style: CS50 Left Ear
3.16.18a - OK... moving back to 5 stars. Got hold of someone in the real customer support and he said that I had defective batteries and they will replace. I don't mind buying one or two years but not every 5 months. Thank-you Sargon (855) 792-0177 3.16.18 - Nope not my charger. Check in the morning and both are 100% per my iPhones icon. Just got off the phone with customer service and they said that it is normal for your batteries to only last half as long after 5 months. He also said it was normal that the second battery would be fully charged in the morning and fall to half charged (while in the case) by the time the first battery ran out. Not as happy with it as I was so dropping my stars. Bought another battery but doesn't seem worth having to pay $25 every 5 months for a battery. . 3-2-18 Still love it but my batteries are not working right. I really think it’s my charger. Will be charging. Go to green then back to Red. The batteries aren’t lasting half as long as they were. Going to check my warranty because I’ve only had since October Waited awhile to write this to be sure I really really like it. My observations below: Pros: I can hear the small stuff (chip bag crinkle, TV at a volume that doesn’t disturb the neighbors and we don’t live in an apartment) Charger holds both batteries to be charged at the same time It’s small and looks (and works) like a Bluetooth without the flashing blue police light Cute little carrying case fits easily in a pocket in my purse to take with me every day There’s and app for that. I love that you have an app where it lets you set up to your own personal amount of hearing loss. It’s just like taking one of those hearing tests except I didn’t hold my breath to pass. And no having to pay the doctor to have this done every time you think you need an adjustment. NOTE: You really should see an ENT before you buy in case your hearing is a medical problem that can be corrected. The Doogie Howser I went to basically said “You’re old – you need a hearing aid” Way more affordable than a “real” hearing aid with a 30 day money back guarantee (hope I don’t have to use this as I am loving my hearing aid, I mean personal amplification device) Cons: I can hear the small stuff (fingernails clicking when typing, husband muttering under his breath, big dog breathing in her sleep, and the high pitched whine of our old chorkie when he wants his way) It hurts. I know this will go away but just to let you know, it will hurt. Nose and ears hurt when I started wearing glasses. Ears hurt when I starting using a regular bluetooth. So I’m a pain veteran and wasn’t surprised by this. It’s already feeling better and doesn’t hurt at all until about 12 hours in. Had an echo at first that went away when I personalized. People used to screaming at me, and still do, kind of hurt my ears. Loud clicking sound when you text. Can turn ringer off and it makes this go away (iPhone 7) Have to disconnect bluetooth on phone when playing a game because it transfers and I lose the super hearing even if I have the game on mute. I definitely would buy again. Matter of fact, trying to get my husband to want one. He’s just not ready to admit he needs one yet. ... show more
