  • Not a lot of originality, but nails the basics
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5 Edition: Standard
This is a Solid RPG. It has good story and good characters -- albeit a lot of their development is found in the sidequests rather than the main storyline. They go from being fairly fatalistic and nihilistic in outlook to being fairly wholesome by late game. The gameplay doesn't evolve much on SMT's basic mechanics and ideas (turn based RPG where the name of the game is hitting enemies with elements they're weak to), but it's actually kinda nice to come back to a game that hits the basics well. The spin on it in this game, with the sabbath system and the commander skills take a lot of upgrades to get to something interesting, but once they're there, you can exploit them with some interesting synergies. Graphically, there's nothing much to write home about. It embraces the cyberpunk aesthetic and does so decently well. On the other hand, a lot of the dungeons aren't very visually interesting. Lots of samey subways and warehouse districts.. Most of the character designs are good. Music is hit and miss, mostly hit. Boss themes are great, ending boss theme is good. The ability to randomize battle themes and use the ones from previous SMT games and spinoffs was much appreciated (albeit part of the paid DLC). Difficulty wise, normal was pretty easy, especially with all the extras I got out of the DLC dungeon. I could probably have beaten the game on hard the first time through without too much trouble. Enemy design is good, granted they're all carryovers from previous SMT entries. Also, I give it an extra point for being the rare SMT game that doesn't have you fight an atheist's conception of god at the end. ... show more

  • Worth it for $20
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5 Edition: Standard
Originally I wrote a review for this game & my review was around a 3 star. My initial reaction to this game when it released was that it was def NOT worth the $60 price tag. First of all the game is made with UNITY which lets be real no one likes them anymore. But majorly the games assets to me do not justify paying such a hefty price tag. The game is really not long at all, at most if you are a speed reader you could probably finish the game within 25 hours with minimal grinding. If you are going for the platinum run you might be around 70 hours. I ended up rebuying this game after my initial return back in 2022, I paid $20.00 because it was on black Friday sale and at this price point I felt a little better knowing what I was getting myself into as well as where my money was going. But to summarize a long drawn out explanation Story 7/10 Characters 10/10 Difficulty 2/10 Visuals 9/10 If you can get this game for a good price its def worth playing. ... show more

  • Underwhelming SMT spinoff
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5 Edition: Standard
A spinoff of the Shin Megami Tensei series that feels like a watered-down, overshadowed game compared to its brother/sister franchises. If you get it for cheap, its a worthwhile experience, but there are plenty of better options available. Pros - Smooth, fast paced combat - Decent voice acting - Stylish art, serviceable soundtrack - Decent length RPG (around 35 hours doing mostly the main story) - Packaged with art cards (While they don't do much, I appreciate developers who take the time to include physical items with their games) Cons - One-dimensional characters - LOTS of exposition, but without the interesting story or dialogue of the persona/SMT games - Dungeon crawling similar to persona 3/4, except with much larger, more annoying labyrinth style layouts the require tons of pointless backtracking. - Graphics, while well styled, are technically unimpressive (game looks like it could run on PS3) - Battle system feels like a big step backwards after playing games like persona 5 - Boring and limited demon recruiting system that takes place on the map, instead of during battle like many of the other games that use negotiation commands ... show more

  • A fresh take on a classic Shin Megami Tensei formula
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5 Edition: Standard
The beginning of the game is pretty slow, but it almost sets the pace for the mellow gameplay and exploration. I feel obligated to say this because Persona 5 has spawned a fanbase completely separate from SMT and even older persona games, but this is *not* going to be your next Persona 5 experience. This is a return to the classic dungeon exploration, with similar, yet fresh, rpg battles you'd see in other SMT games. The characters are stylish and the soundtrack is fantastic. Although I was originally confused when a Soul Hakcers sequel was announced, I'm not at all disappointed with the result. I recommend this game. ... show more
