  • Great improvement over A6000
Style: ILCE6600B.CEC
So far, I really like this camera. I've been using it for roughly a month. First thing I did was turn off all the beeps. Nature, especially birds, does not like beeping cameras. Next, I set my ISO to 1600 to 2400 and put the camera on Aperture priority. That's the way I shoot most of the time. The A6600 by Sony is a mirrorless camera as is the A6000. This reduces the weight. However, if you are looking for a full frame camera, this is not for you. Canon and Nikon do make full frame mirrorless cameras but they are two to four times more expensive and are bigger beasts. This camera weighs more than the lightweight A6000 and sports a heavier battery. Surprise! The battery lasts!! One of the main problems with the A6000 was battery life. After an outing, I had to take the battery out and plug it into a charger to keep it at 100%. The camera would run the battery down just by having the battery in the camera. Not so with the 6600. Not only does the battery last for a long time, the camera doesn't run it down so now I can keep a battery in the camera. I've yet to change a fully charged battery in the field. Also,, I was able to use the lenses that came with the A6000 package on the 6600. However, I did find it a bit of a struggle to get my wide angle to seat properly. There's no clicking into place, so I have to make certain that it is on properly. If not, everything will be blurry. I've tried most of my lenses with the A6600, but not all of them. Other lenses seat properly without hassle. Many of the features that the A6000 has are on the A6600 plus some more. Each page of features is a set number of items with no runover. The menu just turns to a new page. I haven't explored many of those features, so I can't comment on them. Although I prefer shooting in Aperture Priority, I do occasionally switch to fully automatic. In that mode, the camera is responsive and focuses rather quickly on the subject. As with all cameras, if you are shooting out the window of a moving car and the window is dirty, there is sometimes a struggle for the camera to focus past the dirt of the window, but it can be done. Also, I find that shooting out the side window, the automatic setting captures the scene with a decent amount of sharpness. The grip of the camera is a bit awkward for my hand. The right side of the camera bulges out as a grip, but the size of the bulge, although I can grip the camera pretty well, would be a problem for a small hand. The movie button is still in an awkward position and not easy to get to without looking to see what you are doing. However, it seems to work better than on the A6000 and doesn't require as much strength to start recording. All in all, I haven't found a lot to complain about with this camera and I do recommend it for the serious photographer if you are looking for either a 2nd camera to add to your gear, or a primary camera that cuts the weight of the full frames, especially when a long lens is sitting on the front end. The A6600 still allows you to shoot in RAW or JPG or both at the same time. ... show more
