Yes some assembly is required! But its takes minutes, and its easy. Not at all taxing. We use it outside the door of our condo. And while it is good looking it's sturdy enough to sit down on, if necessary. I would recommend to anyone.

It's very simple to put together. Shelves do not feel as sturdy as I had hoped which is why I only gave 4 stars. I only use it to keep bath towels on though, so it gets the job done and looks esthetically pleasing. Top is sturdy. Only other complaint is, the original box it came in had gotten knicked and it caused a little cosmetic issue. We purchased this for use in our bathroom as a place to sit before/after a shower. It works great for that purpose. It is easy to sit down and apply lotion to my feet and legs. It looks good holding a few spare towels and easily wipes clean. The bench is sturdy and was easy to assemble.

Tom thought it might be too flimsy to sit on but after assembling it with all horizontal pieces installed it's very sturdy. More attractive than the metal ones I looked at. Holds three pairs of shoes on each level below the top seat including ankle length boots for me and Tom's Keen work boots. Finally have all those shoes corralled and the front entry is much neater!
