  • A hard to find resource
Format: Paperback
I bought this book a little late in the process of building a solar hydronic system. Buy it first. It's well written, detailed, and has excellent illustrations. It's been frustrating learning how to build a system. There is a lot of contradictory, old, and paucity of information out there Solar companies refused to help me unless I hired them. Just a few questions answered would have been a huge help. Youtube videos were too DIY and had maintenance intensive systems. A huge rarely discussed issue is you really need an additional expansion tank tied into the panel line to allow for expansion and cooling of the antifreeze. You also need either backup power or a drop down system for power outages. You will boil your fluid if you don't. This book covers all of that and more. It's a lot of information. Plan to spend some time with it. ... show more

  • Great book on the subject but now going PV.
Format: Paperback
A well done book but PV is now more affordable than Solar thermal. Seven more words and I am out of here.

  • The go-to book for solar heating
Format: Paperback
Hands down the best solar hot water book out there. Well organized, easy to read, great illustrations and technical info is right on. Nice section on Steamback (passive overheating protection) which is a game changer installing solar heating systems (300+ installed).

  • Comprehensive solar thermal how-to with latest and best practices
Format: Paperback
Peter Skinner's comprehensive how-to guide is well-written and thorough. Whether you have a plumbing background or not you'll have a working knowledge of the different designs available. Great text for both the photovoltaic solar or plumbing professional wanting to branch out into solar thermal, or the DIY enthusiast looking to make hot water using the sun's rays. This is the latest and greatest on the subject. He is also an instructor in the Northeast, and I took his Solar Hot Water Fundamentals class. In the class, the text was complemented with hands-on training through his own solar Rover system, a portable solar thermal system designed for use in the classroom. Highly recommended. Get this book, and go take his training class if it's available in your area. You can actually contact him directly though his website, he's friendly and approachable. ... show more
