These compressed paper boards are economical with a textured work surface (much like vellum) and are particularly nice for collage, but also good for various kinds of prelim work -- sketches, studies, first drafts, improvisational pieces or trial runs of work that will later be done on different surfaces or in larger formats. The boards handle many media (collage as noted, acrylics, pencil/markers, crayons/paint sticks, charcoal, oil pastels), but probably less suited to very wet media (heavy acrylics, gels, heavy or layered matte medium, watercolor, etc.), all of which will have a higher tendency to warp the boards. We ordered these for at-home craft use. I think they will satisfy the need, but they are not what I thought I was ordering. They are essentially boards with some canvas-like texture, but they do not have the same look or feel as stretched canvas or other canvas boards that I have seen.
