The protagonist resonated with me on many levels. Her thoughts, guilt, and actions mirrored my own when I was divorced before 30 (with no kids), including some of the after-divorce interaction with her ex (I thought I was the only one!). Maybe it's only my maturity years later, but I could easily see where her feelings of guilt were mis-placed. I probably had the same feelings back when I was that age, but thankfully I'm older and wiser now. I think this book captured the New York and lawyer lifestyles perfectly (although I am NOT speaking from experience in these areas). It is well-written, and was an enjoyable read.

Clearly author has a legal background!

This was an entertaining enough read, decently written, with decent pacing. I’m a lawyer in private practice and could tell it was written by a lawyer who had been in private practice, although all of the coincidences that led to her meteoric professional rise were a bit much for me. Her emotional growth felt a bit meteoric at the end too and thus not particularly resonant. The other figures were rather 2 dimensional such that I forgot all details about them as they came in and our of her life (but to be fair I had long lulls between reading chapters due to my own insane schedule). Digital books are not conducive to flipping back through them for clues, though.

Incredible beautiful book

I honestly loved this book. This is a glorious book. Sarah Vacchiano writes Sam with such truth, delicacy, emotional intelligence, and quiet soul that you soon realize it lives somewhere between fiction and non-fiction. It feels less like a novel and more like being allowed into someone’s inner life at exactly the right moment. I witnessed some of the stories behind this book. I was there. And I can truly say how extraordinary it is to live them again through Sarah’s mind. What once felt private, fragile, and still in motion becomes luminous on the page. This is not a divorce story. It is a phoenix story about the terrifying, exhilarating instant when you stop performing the life you were meant to want and begin listening for the one you actually do. Sarah understands that this crossing is not neat or heroic. It is tender, disorienting, funny, painful, and alive. She knows this territory in her bones. As an artist, those contradictions are what fuel my work. As a father and a friend, it reminds me how worth it all the mess of living really is. The prose sings. It can make you laugh and ache in the same breath. There is real generosity here, not just in what is told, but in how it is offered. Sarah gives you the mess and the grace together, without asking you to choose.
