I previously had the Black Mamba cage that was released for non-battery grip bodies. I used it with the R6 when I was putting it on the gimbal mostly. It was a nice cage but my complaint was it wasn't all that rigid on the top. It would flex a bit when you add a top handle and monitor etc to work off gimbal/tripod. This cage has fixed that with some integrated metal pieces. They lock it down much better as they Mamba did not have those. There are two small inserts that are on each side that go into the lanyard slot on the body. They are removed by Allen head screw when placing the camera body in the cage. You insert them back in and tighten them down. Its a great design and works well to lock the camera in place better. One thing missing on this one versus the black mamba is there was an indent that you could tighten on the bottom. just like a little stud aside from the 1/4 - 20 tripod hole. That was just another nice point to keep the body from wiggling or twisting within the cage. There are several mounting points. I like to load my rig up with nato rails that smallrig also sells.. This enables me to use quick nato type top handles and other attachments for my monitor or mic. Its rigid and so much faster than unscrewing stuff. I have in the picture if you are wondering an arri rosette on the side with a Wooden Camera side handle. Small Rig also sells a similar wooden grip. So essentially this cage is everything I was hoping for and I am happy with my purchase. Now my only gripe is that this Canon R5C still has a micro HDMI port but that's not SmallRigs fault.

So it took a lot longer to realize then I care to admit but I actually skipped over this cage multiple times over the past year. I purchased a Canon R6 Mark II in the fall of 2024 and was looking for a camera cage that could hold it and the battery grip and it turns out the previous small rig cage, the A16 3464, which went with the R5 and R6 Mark 1 was discontinued and replaced by this one. I kept trying to look for the cage that would fit under the impression that this one would not because I had already purchased it before. But again, small rig actually updated the camera cage to accommodate the latest R series of cameras. I did end up getting the small rig black mamba cage for the R6 Mark II in the meantime though. If you're like myself, you probably looked through the entire review section trying to make sure that this cage could fit your specific camera and I can guarantee that it most likely will. After I got it it took less than 5 minutes to put on the R6 Mark 2 with the battery grip and I was back in action. I took an extra look at it and it looks like you get about 2 mm worth of space from the forehead of the R6 Mark II to the padded nose of the small rig cage. That is great for me and exactly what I was looking for because that was the problem that I was facing in the first place with the previous cage that I already purchased. Grateful that I find went ahead and purchased this cage instead of waiting another few months or a year. I also will include some pictures of the original camera cage that I purchased along with the new one for side by side comparison.

Fits my R6 Mk II like a glove. When I initially ordered it, I thought it was specifically for the Mk II and later realized it wasn’t. Nevertheless, it fit my Mk II as there was little to no change in the form of the body, so I was super happy it worked out. I actually received a “used” item that had a gouge I didn’t quickly notice. Not surprised it got past Smallrig when they processed the return. Not really worried, started an exchange that will arrive soon and I will be made whole. It happens I suppose, it’s not like Smallrig or Amazon are going to burn me on it.

As an avid photographer for over 60 years, I have found the Small Rig products to be of exceptional quality and design. This cage fits the Canon R5 with an extended vertical grip. It provides good access to the camera and controls while adding flexibility to your configuration. I use it primarily to assist me with portability when using longer lenses. I have added both a carry handle to the top as well as a side grip. The top handle helps provide a solid grip for lifting and carrying and the side handle compliments the stability of the camera while shooting. As an added bonus, there are cold-shoes and threaded holes for accessories. I currently keep my wireless remote mounted above my side grip and a GoPro mount on the top handle grip. I will say that the addition of a side handle does block the removal of the lower dual battery case but I have solved this by loosening the top handle bolt and removing the lower bolt to swing the handle out of the way. This is a minor inconvenience as the dual batteries provide a full day of shooting and can be charged in-camera without removal. The additional handles are not part of this kit and, if needed, would be a separate purchase. The utility of this cage will depend on how you decide to take advantage of the many mounting options. I will say that the design of this rig does make lens changing a less simple task but I still manage to get my fat fingers between the rig and lens to press the release button. Overall, this is a well-built lightweight device that provides many options to customize your camera. Just remember to order the configuration that fits your camera. Small Rig makes cages for both the standard Canon R5 and this one for use with the added dual-battery vertical control grip.

Fits snug to perfection and the cage has helped my build-out of my Canon R5 immensely. With the different mount areas, I attach about 4 different things at a time and it feels sturdy. I'm a big fan of their products for what I need them to do.

Well build but NOT well designed! Very difficult to reach the Mode button and the Lens ejector knob! specially if you"ve medium to big fingers! More designed for very small hands! Hide too much access at some canon R5 knobs! Should be redesign to be more functional!
