This review is for the tachometer with the black housing. I think they are actually the same mechanism inside, just a different box. Is it a tachometer? Yes. And if used for the intended purpose (testing idle or other constant speed on a small single-cylinder engine like a chainsaw or lawnmower) it probably works great. However, it doesn't work so great on multi-cylinder engines. I tested it on my '93 Geo Tracker, a '90 Sambar kei truck, and a couple twin motorcycles. First, the "default" mode I am guessing is designed for wasted spark engines (typical for small engines), which fire the plug every revolution. Most vehicular engines only fire on the compression stroke, so it will read twice as fast. Fortunately, there is an easy setting that changes this multiplier. But more maddeningly, the reading tends to drift, and suddenly jump. I am pretty sure the reason has to do with the pickup. It's a simple unshielded wire - as the maker notes, you can even just hold the tach next to a plug wire without even attaching the pickup. But that means you're likely to get stray signals from the other cylinders in a multi-cylinder setup, so you'll get too many pulses, and the tach will read randomly too high. You can minimize this by attaching the pickup to the farthest plug wire or even the spark coil, then minimizing the stretch on the pickup wire. Maybe some ignition setups don't suffer from this, but all of my traditional distributor and spark coil systems did. Finally, as some other reviewers have noted, the read cycle is pretty long on this unit. That is, it updates on about a second timescale. That means you can blip the throttle and the tach won't register it. I bought this mostly to test idle speed, and I think it can work for that. You won't be replacing your stock tach, though. I gave it four stars (up from three) because it mostly works, and was really cheap.

Great little tachs, very convenient.

Ive bought two of these now and really like them. They work great for tuning in just the right gearing on my small Honda's when trying to find peak power versus speed output. The screen flashes right at peak output for torque and horsepower so I know at a glance when Im into the upper end of the RPM range too...very convenient. You can also cut the wire to length, removing the alligator clip and warp it around plug wire like a traditional tach and it will work just fine as well.
