Description

The Grinder Half-Zip was born to pull double-duty for waterfowl season. Worn between a next-to-skin layer and a shell for core insulation or as a breathable outer layer. Lofted fleece adds comfortable warmth during long sits in the blind, yet, still breathes during active work setting up decoys while retaining stretch for complete range of motion.

  • My first Sitka piece. Impressive but only a 4 star rating.
Color: Optifade Marsh Size: X-Large
I have owned a lot of camo / hunting clothes from other companies. Scentlok, Kryptic, Scentblocker, Gator Wader, Banded, Realtree, Mossy Oak and even a few brands that have come and gone. This is my first Sitka piece. Was never a huge fan of their patterns and of course the Gucci price was beyond unreasonable. Well I picked up a pair of early season pants off of market place with the tags on em and ended up really liking them. So needed a top to match. I mean everyone knows you cant go out with missed matched camo. The animals will just laugh at you and run away :) When I bought this top, it was only $75. At the time of writing this review just 5 days after it was delivered, the price has jumped up to $140. At that price, this thing would need to be flawless. I mean its more or less just a base layer or warm weather top. The good. The material is stretchy but not overly so. It has a grid pattern on the inside which makes it breathable. I never understood how something could keep the elements out and be breathable at the same time. Now I get it. I actually watched a few videos of mesh base layers that preform better then merino wool. Because like with house insulation, it allows air to work as a buffer and wicks away moisture. The grid pattern on the inside works much the same way as mesh. Just got back from early goose. Morning temps were 55 and a touch of wind. All my buddies commented on it being kinda chilly in their hoodies. I didnt feel it at all. It felt perfect to me. At 80+ degrees they complained it was getting hot. I didnt feel that either. No sweat on my skin at all. Fitment was true to size. I like the little extra length on the body. Can bend over without worrying about the weather sneaking in. I did keep finding myself trying to put my hands in pockets that were not there. Testament to how well this top worked. Kinda tricking my mind into thinking I was wearing a jacket The bad. There isnt a lot of bad but as I mentioned, at the now listed price of $140 for a base layer, it would need to be perfect. The worst thing about this top is the materials. Its not slippery at all. The waterfowl pants I got are of a nice slick material. I know that mainly to keep stickers off of you but its also perfectly stretchy. The inside material of this top, having that grid pattern and aimed at keep you dry from sweat, negates the possibility of wearing a spandex kinda base layer under it. Here were I live, you can have 50 degree mornings and 95 degree afternoons. So having the option of a super thing base layer is nice to have. Now this top did perform better then I expected in the warmer temps, so not being able to use a thin base under, doesnt seem like its going to be that big of a deal. The real issue comes in when you actually use this as a base layer. Because the outside material is kinda sticky, you will need to be kinda selective with your jacket / coat. This does not work under your typical hoodie. The last thing is the arm length. I understand they need to make things that fit every body type but there is about 3 extra inches of arm length that bunches at the cuff. Seems a little excessive. . Overall, this is easily worth the $75 price I paid. I now understand the hype of Sitka. This top is substantially better then anything I have worn in the past. But at the inflated $140 price, I dont think Id of kept it with the issues mentioned above. ... show more

  • Nice but not amazing, not warm at all
Color: Optifade Timber Size: Large
Sitka is as I expected - mostly overrated and overpriced. It's fine but prob not with what I paid for it. Pro - Comfortable, nice styling, half-zip way better than quarter zip when taking on/off, long in back will be nice under bibs, flat seems & zippers, thumb straps to help putting on under a outer garment, feel of the outer side & inner side are pretty nice - not fluffy and prob less likely to snag or pick Con - Way under-sized - glad I ordered one size larger than I normally wear and it still barely fits, not warm at all but will be ok for early season or as a layer, price was high - could prob find a lesser hyped brand for half the price and would probably be warmer Overall, it's fine. I won't wend it back but wouldn't order it again either. ... show more
