I have been thru so many sergers in my upholsterery and slipcover shop over the last 30 years. I have liked none of them. I took a chance when i saw this on amazon. Mainly because it said Heavy duty. It was very easy to thread for a serger. I have been using it now for a year and a half and only just changed the blade a month ago. That was astonishing. Every serger i’ve ever owned needed new blades at least 3 times a year to the tune of 35.00 a set. This serger came with a second replacement blade too. The only set back was it was a devil to replace the blade. The screw was so tiny and i kept dropping it inside the machine. If you buy this machine buy a tiny phillips head screw driver with a magnetic tip. One really should have come with it. I now own 2 for my shop. The first one was very inexpensive,the second one was quite a bit more. I quess the price went up because it became popular. ... show more

This machine is fantastic! Yes, it’s a serger. Yes, these machines are a little tricky to thread. Yes, you need a manual to learn how to thread it. Don’t be like the other reviewers and lose your mind because the manual isn’t in the box. It’s a digital download easily accessible on the Singer website. If it doesn’t come up the first time you search for it, try searching in google. I promise the manual exists. Threading is challenging if you’re a newbie but practice makes perfect. This machine is fast and efficient. It took me a few tires to get my thread tension right but that’s user error - not a machine issue. I also really love the suction feet on the bottom of the machine. Helps it stay securely in place while in use. Fantastic machine! The quality you’d expect from Singer. ... show more

A little on the loud side and it hops around some, but it was fairly easy to thread (all 4) easy enough just looking at the diagram. Serges beautifully and easy to dial in the tensions and it keeps it where you set it (whew) does it take a little while to thread? Sure, but hey just watch your cones/tie off and you shouldn't have to rethread. Knife was sharp and has stayed so. Happy with this purchase. Its a Good little machine. ... show more

Initially I thought it had been used because it came prethreaded but they do that for convenience. It also came with some canvas to practice on. There’s no manual, just a slip of paper saying where to find it. I did a search for singer x5004 and it came right up. The equivalent on singers website is 14HD854. Some other reviews mentioned that they couldn’t find the manual or the machine on singers website but it’s for sure there. Anyway it works great, seems like it would work on thicker fabrics as well as thin ones. As with any serger it’s a pain to thread but it comes color coded and with the included tweezers it’s not terrible. Overall good for the price! ... show more

I think the first one was a return that was not retested to see if it worked. Someone had obviously tried to sew and cut a material much too thick for this type machine and popped the internal gears loose from the motor. 2nd machine has worked like a charm. My wife is a seamstress and she is very pleased with it. ... show more

I am really impressed by this little machine. I expected a lot less for the price. I see mainly upholstery and drapery fabrics for my home redecorating projects. So far, the only complaint is the thread that came with the machine was very poor quality. Once I replaced it, I have had no problems at all. The cutting knife is great even with multiple layers of thicker fabrics. So far, I have made a bedspread, drapes, a top treatment, and too many pillows. This is the worst serger to thread ever. I've been using surgers for 25 plus years and it is horrible. It is loud. It is difficult to thread the bottom looper it's nearly impossible. The directions don't come with it. You have to print it out. I print it out the directions and it's still incomplete! Buyer beware; I had to return this... ... show more
