Siemens VC30GRYU Versicharge 30-Amp Electric Vehicle Charger with Flexible Indoor/Outdoor Cord Siemens VersiCharge Electric Vehicle ChargersFounded more than 165 years ago, Siemens is a worldwide industry leader in electronics and electrical engineering, dedicated to innovation, quality, and reliability in the fields of energy, industry, and healthcare. Standing for technological excellence and delivering infrastructure solutions, Siemens is the world’s chief supplier of environmental technologies, with about 40 percent of its total revenue coming from green products and solutions. VersiCharge is just one more best in class product in the green energy sector to be developed by Siemens. VersiCharge is available in plug in (VC30GRU) and hard wired options (VC30GRHW) VersiCharge makes it easier than ever to incorporate energy efficient practices into your home VersiCharge SelectionThe Siemens 30-A Level 2 VersiCharge electric vehicle charger is available in two configurations – Hardwire for indoor use only (VC30GRYHW) and Universal which can be used indoors and outside (VC30GRYU). The Universal unit arrives ready to plug in for use into a 240V receptacle and is easily attachable to most surfaces with the provided mounting bracket. Charging ConvenienceMost EV batteries will be charged from zero to full in less than 3.5 hours, leaving plenty of time to delay your charge by 2-8 hours with the easy to use time of charge delay feature on the unit. Additional features like the status indicating LED Halo visible from a distance and a clean cord management solution will leave you even more satisfied when you get into your fully charged EV every day. Choose Whichever Installation is Right for YouThe Universal VersiCharge is equipped with a plug and cord assembly which can either be plugged into a suitably sized double-gang receptacle below or behind the unit. The plug and cord assembly can be detached from the unit for a hardwired installation. For an indoor only hardwire application, we recommend the more cost effective VersiCharge hardwire version (VC30GRYHW). Not only does this easy plug and play installation enable you to take your VersiCharge on the road with you, but it comes equipped with a mounting bracket and other hardware for permanent installation at home in your garage, carport, or parking pad. The weatherproof NEMA 4 enclosure, made of 60 percent recycled material with matte finish, is designed to withstand the elements no matter its location. The unit’s standard SAE J1772 connector is ergonomic for user comfort and an integrated holster keeps debris and dust out of the plug for clean and convenient usage. The attached 20-foot cord (14 foot for Hardwire only) wraps over the top of the enclosure for expedient, clean storage. Making Energy Efficiency EasyThe VersiCharge is jam packed with user-friendly features that make it easier than ever to efficiently and economically charge your electric vehicle. Monitor the status of your vehicle’s charge with help from the LED color indication halo that’s visible from across the garage and displays the stage at which your charge stands, from ready to charge, to charging, to fully charged. As demand response utility plans increase in popularity, inquire with your utility about utilizing the VersiCharge low voltage connection to enroll your charger in potential savings programs offered by your utility. Further adjust charging status to specifically fit your schedule and electricity bill budget with help from the delay timer functionality, which allows you to postpone charging for up to eight hours from the time of plug-in with the press of a button. Regardless of when you choose to charge, the VersiCharge power output can be adjusted to complement the outlet’s capability, ranging in increments from a maximum power setting of 7.2 kW to 1.8 kW. Plus, by delivering adjustable, extended amperage options, the VersiCharge keeps up with evolving electric vehicle technology, helping to future proof compatibility over time. • Hooking into my Higher Power
Pattern Name: Charger
I recently bought a new Chevy Volt, an electric vehicle with an onboard gas-powered generator. On fully-charged batteries, you get 38 miles or so of travel without running the gas engine.* The problem is, the little 110-volt trickle charger that comes with the vehicle takes a l-o-n-g time to charge the car if the battery is really low. Like, 14-16 hours long. (This may be due in part to a setting I only recently discovered, whereby you can increase the amperage of the charging process. I don't really understand electricity very well, so I don't know why the higher setting isn't the default, but I digress.) Thus I decided I needed a 240-volt charger to bring my recharge time down to the sub-four-hour range. I did my research. I looked at a lot of chargers and a lot of reviews. Having assimilated all the options, I came to rest on the Siemens VC30GRYU Versicharge 30-Amp Electric Vehicle Charger with Flexible Indoor/Outdoor and 20-Feet Cord, because I recognized the Siemens brand name, because it had fairly positive reviews, because it was one of the less-expensive models out there, and because of the 20-foot cord. I can't believe how much some manufacturers charge (har!) per foot for their cord! I also liked that it had the pigtail, which should make installation a snap. The unit that turned out to be its biggest competitor for my patronage was the JuiceBox, for reasons of its lower price and its 6-foot cord. Apparently, the JuiceBox is not yet UL approved though, at least partially because of that 6-foot cord, and I didn't want to go there, so Versicharge got the nod. I would be powering the Versicharge via a separate circuit controlled by my electric utility--they turn it on at 11 pm, and off at 7 am. In exchange for allowing them to cycle the power, they give me a $500 rebate and a very favorable rate of 4 cents per KwH. Consequently, I needed to hire an electrician to put in the socket for me. Long story short (oops, already too late for that!), the electrician didn't want to put the charger where I wanted it (or rather, he would, but it would cost $1000 more for the additional labor), and when he saw that the charger could be hard-wired instead of plugged in, he wanted to do that; and it's a good thing, because the rep from the electric company said he wouldn't have signed off on the $500 rebate if it weren't hard-wired. This also had the salubrious effect of allowing me to convince the Missus that we needed a second garage door opener for the third stall--the additional expense thereof was still far less than that of running the cable all the way to where we initially wanted the charger installed. Now, here's the biggest negative I can offer about this unit: it's wired in such a way that when the power company sent the remote control commands to the charger to turn it active, the charger interpreted it as a signal to go on Pause. When they sent the signal to put the power on pause, the charger interpreted it as a signal to go on Active. Practically, I was getting power at the overnight rate all day, and getting it turned off overnight. Which, in some respects, is a benefit. But on nights when I don't get the car plugged in till around 9:30 or 10 pm, that means I don't get fully charged before I have to leave the next morning. I contacted the power company, who sent out a tech, and he found that if he rewired their controller circuit "backward," the charger would work as intended--activating at 11 pm, and deactivating at 7 am. I don't know whether there is no standard for how to cycle power to these units, or if there is a standard, and someone did it wrong; and if the latter, I don't really know whether it's Siemens or my local power company that did it wrong. Consequently, I can't really ding the product for this misstep. In the looks department, the Versicharge is a little retro. It's not snazzy and futuristic like my electric car is. It does have a neat greenish pulsing aura while actively charging, and a solid green aura when charging is complete but it's still plugged in and powered up. When not in use, you can stick its "thumb" into its "mouth," to keep it off the floor and out of the way. Some people have complained that the mouth doesn't hold the thumb very securely, and I'd agree that's so, but at the same time... it doesn't fall out, so what's the problem? The Versicharge has a delay function built into its controls, but I don't use it. I just pull into the garage, plug in the charger, and let it stay plugged in until the electric company turns on the juice, at which time, the car will immediately start charging. If I had the power company's other discount option, where the charger is hot all day long, but the rate changes based on time of day, I *might* use the delay function, but I'd probably be more likely to use my car's system, as that allows me to specify a wall-time to start charging, rather than just a "delay for 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours" option. I.e., it's a feature that's nice to have, maybe, but not essential. I specifically bought the unit because I could plug it into the wall--and, presumably unplug it, stick it in the trunk, and plug it in somewhere else if I were traveling. But as it turns out, the flexibility of also being able to remove the pigtail and hard-wire the unit into the house turned out to be a distinct advantage. If I could give this a fractional rating, I'd probably ding the unit a half a star for some of the very minor annoyances detailed above; but since I can't, and since I can't really justify taking a whole star off, I am pleased to grant it a full boat of five stars. * In theory, anyway. The vehicle management system will run the engine when it's cold out, just to warm up the batteries; it will run the engine for ten minutes if you haven't used it recently, to prevent stale gas from gumming up the insides; it will run the engine for other reasons I have not yet discovered. But for the most part, my daily commute can be accomplished without firing up the oil-burner. ... show more

  • L-2 Charger is a must! UPDATE - 3 Years 9 Months Later and going strong!
Pattern Name: Charger
Jan 24, 2022 UPDATE: So We purchased this L2 charger in April of 2018. Our hope was that this well known brand would serve as our primary EVSE. Well, here we are now 3 years, 9 months later and the EVSE is still going strong! For about half the time, in our prior home, this EVSE was an intrical part of our Solar & Home battery bank. Our Solar system would replenish our at home battery banks by day. When we returned with the Volt, we'd connect the EVSE, set the delay to start 6 hrs later. This would allow us to use the battery banks to power the home. Then after we turn in for the night, the EVSE would come on, also drawing from the battery banks to replenish the Volt's drive battery. The next morning the Volt would be ready to go and the Solar panels would replenish the in home battery banks. We moved about 18 months ago, taking our Siemens EVSE with us. Second house, second installation! While we are now in a much smaller place (I've retired), and we don't have an elaborate solar system here, we do have a fantastic albeit uncomplicated ESVE that is still recharging our Volt every single day. The simple delay start option allows us the ability to decide when charging begins. That said, I would wholeheartedly recommend the purchase of this Siemens EVSE. Basic, yes! Reliable, definitely. Easy to use, without a doubt. My only suggestion is that no matter how well you think you know electric, if you are not actually a certified electrician, that you hire a certified electrician to properly install a dedicated circuit for the EVSE to operate on. Don't risk your two most valuable assets, your home and your vehicle. ~Mr. T. Morton Original Post ---- I wanted a uncomplicated unit, just plug in and charge! I've read reviews on so may Level 2 chargers that I guess some people love because they can check the status of the charge from great distances via their smart phone. This would not be me. I just want to come home from my outing and plug in my Volt to top off the batteries. This unit has built in 2,4,6 & 8 hour charge delay for those that get better rates at night. No need to program a device and pray the app works or to have to rely on the availability of wifi to charge your vehicle. Just plug in and charge! I hired an electrician to install the 40 amp 220v service and outlet. He did a great job and including the need to run wire through the attic, he was done within a couple of hrs. The end result is I can now charge my car after bebopping around town in a matter of a couple hrs instead of overnight when I used the 110v Level 1 charger. The charger is easy to operate and I can neatly store the cord by just wrapping it around the unit itself. Though the charge cord is plenty long enough, just to have it, I wished I'd gotten the longer cord. Otherwise this was a perfect solution. A faster, better and safer way to recharge my Volt or for that matter any future vehicle that I purchase that is either a total EV, plug in Hybrid or ER electric like my Volt. Would I recommend it, YES! I suggest that unless you are appropriately skilled, that you hire a qualified electrical contractor to install the electrical service. Better safe than sorry.
