Description

The author of the New York Times Bestseller THE $100 STARTUP shows how to launch a profitable side hustle in just 27 days. For some people, the thought of quitting their day job to pursue the entrepreneurial life is exhilarating. For many others, it’s terrifying. After all, a stable job that delivers a regular paycheck is a blessing. And not everyone has the means or the desire to take on the risks and responsibilities of working for themselves. But what if we could quickly and easily create an additional stream of income without giving up the security of a full-time job? Enter the side hustle. Chris Gullibeau is no stranger to this world, having launched more than a dozen side hustles over his career. Here, he offers a step-by-step guide that takes you from idea to income in just 27 days. Designed for the busy and impatient, this detailed roadmap will show you how to select, launch, refine, and make money from your side hustle in under a month. You’ll learn how to: • Brainstorm, borrow, and steal to build an arsenal of great side hustle ideas (day 3) • Apply “Tinder for Side Hustle” logic to pick the best idea at any time (day 6) • Learn, gather, or create everything you need to launch; then set up a real life way to get paid (days 13-14) • Start raking in the money by channeling your inner Girl Scout (day 18) • Master the art of deals, discounts, and special offers (day 21) • Raise your game: improve, expand, or make more money off your hustle (days 24-26) A side hustle is more than just another stream of income, it’s also the new job security. When you receive paychecks from different sources, it allows you to take more chances in your “regular” career. More income means more options. More options equals freedom. You don’t need entrepreneurial experience to launch a profitable side hustle. You don’t have to have an MBA, or know how to code, or be an expert marketer. You don’t need employees or investors. With Chris as a guide, anyone can make more money, pursue a passion, and enjoy greater security – without quitting their day job. Read more

  • An Excellent Action Plan for Financial Independence!
Format: Kindle
I don't always review the purchases I make on Amazon, but I am delighted to do so in this case. I have been reading Chris Guillebeau since his first book, the $100 Startup. I find his writing style very enjoyable, his advice actionable and his enthusiasm for the topic really inspiring. Ever since reading the $100 Startup, I have wanted to do some sort of income-generating project on my own. I guess that places me in the ranks of "wantrepreneur" rather than entrepreneur, and I can accept that. I have either been too busy, too tired or too overwhelmed with my day job to actually take the steps to get started on a side hustle. His latest book will help me finally get moving, I think. In early January, I started following Chris' very ambitious and excellent daily(!) podcast. The various stories of hard-working people wanting to find a bit more opportunity and a bit more financial independence really helped rekindle my interest in starting something on the side. When he announced his book, I knew I had to have it. The book meshes very well with the podcast, and they complement each other nicely. There are many things I really appreciate about how the writer approaches this topic: 1. His ideas are actionable. Even for someone who is busy with their main occupation. The 27 days are laid out in a logical, easy to follow sequence. They are broken down so that although every day some concrete progress is made, it is not particularly overwhelming. One of the real challenges many people face when launching a side hustle project is the somewhat overwhelming list of things that need to be done. This book provides an excellent framework to follow. 2. His ideas are presented heuristically - he doesn't encourage the reader to slavishly copy the examples in the book of a particular side hustle. Instead, he wants the reader to look at it as an example of an approach or technique of income generation. He understands that everyone is different, and not every side hustle is right for each individual. He strongly encourages the readers to take the *principle* from his example, and consider how it may be adapted to better suit that particular reader. I really feel that this principal-centered approach is vital for a side hustle to succeed. 3. He is very much focused on the reader's needs. Throughout the book, he encourages the reader to consider what kind of side hustle is right for him/her. Some thoughtful self-reflection in the planning stage can prevent a lot of regret later on. Reminding the reader of that is core to the values of the book. 4. He is entirely correct in his views about traditional work. He clearly shows the reader that the financial security and peace of mind the extra income a side hustle can bring makes it worth exploring. Things are changing so rapidly these days. Long gone are the days where you could feel secure with a single source of income. It is most likely going to stay that way for the foreseeable future. Mr. Guillebeau always concludes his podcast episodes with, "Inspiration is good, but inspiration with action is so much better." I think this book will both inspire you AND help you take the logical, actionable, incremental steps necessary to achieve a bit of financial independence! Buy this book! ... show more

  • The Ultimate Step-by-Step Guide to Side Hustle Success!
Format: Hardcover
How many times have you been sitting at your desk or walking outside and, out of nowhere, an idea for a business or additional way to make money pops into your head...then you do nothing with it? I’ve heard this (okay, I’ve been that person) so many times. There is so much mythology and complexity around what it takes to go from idea to income. In the world of entrepreneurship, the lore has become, “you’ve gotta be all-in, all the time” if you want to succeed. Truth is, that’s a complete fiction. And, what if you don’t so much want to built the next mega-company, but instead would love to just do something you enjoy on the side that also happens to generate a nice bit of extra cash? That’s where Chris Guillebeau’s Side Hustle steps in. The term “side hustle” has become all the rage these days, but for Guillebeau, it’s the way he’s lived his life and earned his income for more than a decade. As a friend and colleague, I’ve watched from the sidelines as he’s repeated the process many times, getting better and faster with each iteration (and often looked on in awe). And, I was excited to receive a copy to dive into and learn from. In the book, Chris draws upon his deep well of experience starting different side hustles, then blends that knowledge with the experiences and case-studies of people from many walks of life to distill a step-by-step methodology based on what actually works in the real world. He offers a roadmap that takes you from idea to tested and implemented side hustle in a remarkably short period of time. What I really love is the level of granular action-taking. Sure, there’s enough theory to explain why something is important, but the real value is that the book gives you something very specific to do every day that moves your quest forward. It’s these small daily steps that lead to big outcomes, and also stop you from becoming overwhelmed along the way. If you’re looking for an exhaustive tome on entrepreneurship or a guide to quitting your job and going all in, this is not it. But, if you’re looking for streamlined, effective and actionable wisdom that’ll get you out of dreamer mode and into daily action mode, this book is the perfect place to start! ... show more

  • Are you worried about jeopardizing what you have for something that looks better, that may not be better
Are you one of those people who needs to earn more? Are you worried about jeopardizing what you have for something that looks better, that may not be better? After all, you like your colleagues, the work and even your manager. The problem is that all that liking doesn’t pay the bills. Author Guillebeau’s book, ‘Side Hustle’ may be exactly what you should be reading. Finding a ‘side hustle’ sounds like the excellent advice one gets from your gym partner or your hairdresser. (Yes, you say to yourself, great idea, but now tell me how!) “It’s not that hard to start a side hustle. You can do so in less than a month by following the lessons in this book,” the author promises. This book is a guide, broken down into a four-week programme with daily activities. The process starts with generating a list of profitable ideas. Then choose from that list which is best for you at this point in your life. Then you must take action. The term “hustle” is a good one, because it has a sense of urgency. It includes starting even before you feel you are totally ready and doing the correcting while you are in action. Success is really a function of the right frame of mind, and if your hustle is the right one for you, it won’t require much money. Some hustles cost hardly anything to start. You certainly don’t need a business degree, or even expertise at starting a business. You also don’t need assistants, or business partners. You do, however, need a clear goal. It may be as simple as making some extra money to pay off a debt, or to buy something you really want or need. The goal of your hustle could even be to create a continuous source of income, which may even, as it has for some people described in this book, replace or exceed the income from your current job. That said, where do you start? The first step is to draw up a list of business ideas that could work. Do this on a piece of paper, on your phone or on your computer. NOT in your head. And don’t stop until you have many more than one. When you start looking for ideas you will be surprised how many there are all around you. Then you can apply the criteria for selection. Great ideas have 3 qualities: they are feasible, profitable, and persuasive. A feasible idea is one you can start very soon, and that will earn you money in a short period of time. If it is a grand idea that will require great dedication, significant capital, it is not a side hustle. It is useful to see the hustle as much like a hobby, but with one huge difference. Most hobbies cost money, but your side hustle makes money. If you would have difficulty explaining the idea in a sentence or two, you should rethink the idea. “Everywhere you look, hustle ideas are all around you,” the author promises, so pay close attention to your surroundings—you never know when a good idea might show up. There are three broad categories of side hustles. You can sell a product, whether one of your own or someone else’s. You can provide a service or you can be a ‘middleman’ of some kind. The book has numerous ideas, and while none may fit you exactly, they will get your creative spirit going. Below are a few. Develop a travel concierge service to help people when they miss their flights. Become a home, office, or life organizer for busy or disorganized people. Buy and sell used textbooks to university students. Start an online course in some quirky subject you know a lot about. Visit jumble sales and buy items to resell. Start an Airbnb, but for dogs, so their owners can travel and leave the dogs somewhere better than a kennel. Is there an obvious way to make money from any of your ideas? Does your idea solve a problem for someone? Can you make this idea happen quickly? Is it relatively low effort? Can you get paid more than once for this idea? Is this idea for your side hustle no more than another part-time job? (It should make your life easier, not harder.) “If your idea is to sell lunar golf carts to astronauts, you should understand right away that this idea comes with some major constraints: astronauts are a very small market, production costs are likely quite high, and it’s hard to get to the moon to open your shop.” If you answer yes to most of the questions above, then get to work right away! Your side hustle can of course grow into something larger than your day job. Consider the Uber driver, Harry Campbell, who created an online community called ‘The Rideshare Guy.’ Instead of only driving people around, he now also earns money coaching other drivers. As a driver he can only do one lift at a time, but since new drivers are constantly signing on, Harry’s market demand is nearly inexhaustible. To start though, remember that your side hustle must have a clear plan to make money. The expansion of the plan can come later. Much like dating, the author explains, look at a lot of ideas, reject most of them, flirt with a few, and then settle in for a trial phase with the most attractive and well-rounded option. You probably don’t know how to do half the things you need to start this business, but everything is “figureoutable” (not English!) the author points out. A side hustle isn’t only about money, as helpful as that can be. A side hustle really can change your life in a profound way – by building your resourcefulness. If this idea has relevance to you, read this book. Immediately. • Awesome Read and Roadmap
Format: Hardcover
I am a huge fan of Chris Gillebeau's podcast Side Hustle and have been waiting for the book. I just finished (ok I had the day off). Disability is 24 hour job and I have 4 kids, But this year, Side Hustle is all about hope combined with action (his word is inspiration plus action). Since it's not easy to take notes for me - haveing this book in hand is even better than expected because it provides a roadmap. And you don't need to be a technical wiz at all, or even change your life much if you don't want to, the message is a side hustle can be what you design and dream (and in my case - need!). Part of the fun of comes from "how could I solve this problem" -- inventions, ideas - well, it's made life more fun since every day there's a new short story delivered via podcast. The book is a package of possibility - an incredible guide to a city I want to visit or even move to. Having all the resources in one place plus writing and stories that will make you smile - it's great. ... show more

  • A Step by Step Starting Point for Your New Business
Format: Kindle
There are few others out there who can break down the concepts of starting a business as clearly and concisely as Chris. From the $100 Startup Days through his more recent books, and now with the Side Hustle Podcast he repeatedly proves he not only knows his stuff, but he knows how to teach it as well. I found this book to be the best starting point I've seen for someone looking to start their own side hustle (I received an advance copy). Not only will it help you find the perfect idea (even if you don't have one), but then it provides clear, actionable and mostly non-intimidating steps to actually lay the foundation for your new business. The fact it's broken out as a day by day plan makes it very clear what you need to accomplish and in what order you need to do so (even if it ends up taking more than 27 days). Overall Side Hustle is a great addition to his previous books. It's also the most useful and practical book yet for someone legitimately looking for a non-intimidating starting point into the world of entrepreneurship and small business. ... show more

  • A little disappointed
Format: Kindle
I was hoping for a book that went into a little more depth on how to do something you're passionate about as a side hustle, rather than "how to just make extra money in your spare time." This book is all about finding something, anything, not necessarily something you're passionate about, to add a secondary source of revenue. And that's fine for some people but I was really looking for tips and advice about how to turn a serious hobby or interest into a secondary business and/or how to make money on the side from your passion projects. Still, if you're looking to make extra money any way possible, this is a decent basic book to help you figure out how to do that. ... show more

  • I earned $68 in the first 27 days I earned $68 in the first 27 days
Format: Hardcover
I've been listening to the Side Hustle School podcast since the beginning and look forward to Chris' insight each morning. So when he announced he was publishing a book, I jumped at the chance for an advance copy so I could devour even more of his brilliant guidance. (The cover on the advance copy is different from the final version, so don't get confused by the photos.) The book did not disappoint (of course). I love the step-by-step layout of the book with a very specific 27-day roadmap for how to discover your side hustle mission all the way through to launch date and beyond. The advice is practical and down to earth with direction like "launch before you think you're ready and adjust as you go." You can't let perfectionism hold you back if you want a side hustle to be a success. And don't worry if things don't work out the first time, Chris gives you lots of tips on how to evaluate your launch and make changes for the next iteration. Did it work for me? Yep. I'm already earning some extra money on the side. As soon as I got the book I grabbed a blank notebook and carried it with me wherever the Side Hustle book went so I could craft my own side hustle plan (I even took it to the beach a couple times for some educational reading). I've written pages and pages of notes and generated lots of ideas for future projects. Since starting the 27-day plan (it's taken me more than 27 days because... life) I've started earning affiliate income from my existing personal blog that never used to earn anything. Now that the low hanging fruit is started, it's time to grow it and see where it takes me next. ... show more

  • A realistic and worthwhile book for those looking to boost their income
Format: Hardcover
I love Chris' books and have read them all. I purchased this one outright instead of taking it out of the library because I wanted to refer back to the book repeatedly. The examples are nice and add some legitimacy to Guillebeau's claims, although they are SO unique that they really aren't replicable or relevant in all likelihood to most readers. Their strength, though, lies in their ability to help you think outside the box and see where you may be able to apply your own unique life and career experience to create a side hustle that is both fulfilling and has potential to earn money (and possibly event replace your FT gig someday). ... show more
