  • Didn’t stain our deck cracks
It would stain one side of the cracks but then I had to go back and do the other side! Took twice as long and I stopped using it!

  • Not what I thought.
I wanted the holder. I still can use them with the one tool I already have.

  • Not a gimmick. Really works!
Started to refinish my deck in 2013. Discovered Shur-line's Deck Stain Pad WITH Groove Tool. Brilliant. Of course, one thing about painting is there are a zillion tools out there to help you work better, faster, neater, upside down, or whatever. They all work...more or less. Of those zillion painting tools, how many are you ENTHUSIASTIC about? Well I'm ENTHUSIASTIC about this tool. Let's count the ways: 1. The pad is a good size. Neatly covers a 6" deck board (which is really 5.5"). 2. The pad lays paint and stain on the deck very nicely. Neater than a roller. Less back-and-forth, too. 3. The pad holds a lot of paint. You cover a lot of deck every time you load the pad in the stain or paint. 4. With a decent extension on the pad, work is fast. 5. The little "groove tool" really works! Better coverage in the grooves. Fewer drip lines. The difference is obvious when you see it. 6. You can opt to have the "groove tool" extended or retracted. Best of both worlds. Overall, I was surprised at how much better this tool stained my deck when compared to other methods. Using a pad may be the best way to go in general. If you have grooves in your deck, this little thing does a better job and saves a ton of time. But go ahead, use a chip brush on every linear inch of groove in your deck. You still won't get application as smooth and even as with this groove tool. (Of course we can ignore the extra hour of work and the sore back that goes with it.) Then, of course, in a year or three you'll want to refinish your deck. Here's your refill. Ready to go. Beautiful. I'm posting this review because I found this deck stain pad, and the refill pads for it, to be a superior method for refinishing a deck. I hope you find this helpful. • Good pad, but groove tool failed within 3 feet.
I was able to use the pad just fine, but the groove tool separated within the first three feet of deck. It was useless after that.

  • Great tool for the right application- groove tool should be available separately
This deck stain pad with groove tool worked great for staining our deck. I started off with a Shur-Line flat staining pad and a brush for getting the grooves, then switched to the Shur-Line pad with groove tool. The one with the groove tool saved my back, and lots of time. What a lifesaver! As long as the grooves of your deck are wide enough to fit the tool, this is a great investment. The pad held up well after cleaning, but the fabric came loose from the groove tool, and you can't buy just the groove tool. ... show more

  • Good idea, but not perfect
I had a difficult time getting the stain to spread evenly. The part that fits between the deck boards sometimes became stuck. The boards need to be spaced with enough room for it to work properly. You can also use it without the protrusion, but I found I was able to get a more even coat using a deck brush. I was really hoping this would work well enough so that I wouldn't have to bend or get on my knees. ... show more

  • Pad falls off quickly on the groove piece!
The idea is a good one, but the pad that covers the groove piece in the center of the tool, didn’t last. I was able to only stain about 2 feet of my deck when when the pad fell off. The groove part of the tool, was the only reason I bought this. Paid $22.99 for something that didn’t last. I will be returning the extra groove tool pad refill I purchased. Unless you want to buy a bunch of refill pads, I don’t recommend this. Very disappointed. ... show more

  • Grove tool's Pad wears out too quickly
For this amount of money need to supply 2 or 3 extra groove tool pads. For my pressure treated 4x6s with 1/4inch grove, I only got about 300 linear feet out of the pad. I bought this pad primarily for the groove tool feature. I use a small roller to do the surface after a pass with the groove tool part of this refill. ... show more

  • It works great if the grooves on your deck are wide enough ...
As far as ideas go it is very innovative, It works great if the grooves on your deck are wide enough and clear. The only real problem I found was that the "groove" part of the pad has less "fuzz" that the larger pad and will wear out much sooner. Overall, I continued to use the larger pad and found it worked very well. Be sure you have no nail heads protruding as it will damage your pad. ... show more

  • Use to foul up your project.
This tool is ineffective in several ways. Though the idea of a an edge applicator seems good it doesn't work in reality. The width between deck boards vary but the applicator does not. This feature was useless on my deck. There also needs to be an adjustment for how deep the edger lowers. Without this the edger simply rides on top of the boards. The pad also loads way to much paint. Ideally I wanted 2 thin coats. The first coat came out well with a brush but the second coat was way to thick using this pad. ... show more

didn't work quit as well as expected, if the grooves in your deck boards are not perfect this is a problem, I used it without the center piece sticking up as my deck boards are a little unevenly spaced and old which is my fault, otherwise it spread the stain evenly and allot quicker then a paint brush ... show more

  • Great product!
The product performed as described. It made the staining of the deck go a lot easier, since we didn't have to use a brush to get between the boards. My deck is approx. 14ft x 45ft and I was able to finishbir eith one pad. Some years I need two as the groove pad wears out.
