The ink is VIVID black. I was sort of surprised as I have an older non retractable that is not as vivid, but that may be due to age. Nice ultra fine point which I use for my plant labels and other labels.

With my limited vision I like to use a good black line when I write anything. Ultra fine sharpies have worked well for me, but it has always been a nuisance to keep track of the caps. Now I don't have to any more. I love the retractable feature of this pen. It is a nice time saver to be able to "click" instead of uncapping and recapping.
