This is a good started set for someone that doesn't have any of these tools. The chisels were better than I expected. I was impressed with how incredibly sharp they were right out of the box. Honestly, they may never be that sharp again. The chisels worked well, as expected. The handle is comfortable but I wish it was a little larger in diameter. I liked the unnecessary detail of laser engraving to the backs of the chisels. I say unnecessary because it's pretty obvious which one's which. Since the chisels were already super sharp, I decided to sharpen the blade in my block plane. The set comes with a reversable diamond sharpening stone with 400 grit on one side and 1000 grit on the other. I started with the 400 grit to flatten the back side of the blade. Once flattened, I flipped it over and inserted the blade into the honing guide. The clamping mechanism works well and easily held the blade at a 90 degree angle. It was a little tricky getting the right length exposed to reproduce the cutting angle. This was trial and error with three tries to get it right. The sharpening block wants to move around while you are sharpening. You can't easily clamp it because the clamp would be in the way. A bench dog worked well for me, but you could always screw/clamp a stop block to the workbench to give you something to press against and keep it from moving. The honing guide didn't seem to roll very well at first but it got better. A little WD-40 would probably sort that out for good. The diamond sharpening stone is too short at only six inches. Compare that to whet stones or other diamond stones that are 8-9 inches in length. The good news is that the honing guide can be used on any sharpening surface. All in all, it's a good inexpensive starter set.

After receiving the replacement set, everything showed up as advertised and seems to work well; however, the metal ring around the end of the handles of all the chisels, are loose just like the first set!

This is a bit of a tricky review, because, basically, there are 3 products here, but the one I was primarily interested in when getting this was the honing guide. I'll give each a review, but understand that the honing guide was what I considered the primary purchase, and it gets 5 stars. Honing Guide: Great. Made of some solid material and works extremely well. I have another honing guide that I've used for chisels and planes and this one blows it out of the water. The things that really shine on it are 1) the large roller on the bottom that seems to have actual ball bearings 2) the great engagement on the wedged sections of the honing guide which engages the chisel or the plane blade. It's worth noting that the roller is intentionally displaced on the bottom of the honing guide, so you need to pay attention to which way it is positioned depending on which angle you are grinding. However there are instructions which explicitly tell you which way to position your blade on the honing guide depending on your desired sharpening angle. Sharpening Stone: It is a diamond stone with 400/1000 grit. I have not had a diamond stone before so I'm not sure if what I experienced using it was normal. Initially, the stone was chewing through material like crazy which was fine for a primary bevel, but even the 1K grit seemed aggressive. I used my own whetstones afterwards to finish off my chisels and plane blade, and my 1K whet stone gave a significantly smoother finish compared to the provided 1K grit diamond stone. By the end of my time sharpening it also seemed like the provided diamond stone had lost considerable power and was not nearly as aggressive. (I looked it up just now and read that there is, in fact, a break in period and technique for diamond stones, so be sure to look that up if you want to break yours in and perhaps the stone would do significantly better than what I experienced, ha!) Chisels: There's a whole world of chisels out there and I'm not an expert on them, but I can tell you that these ones came still having a bur on them from having been rough ground at ~25 degree angle. It honestly seems like whoever put this product together thought, "They want to buy a honing guide eh? Well, let's give them some chisels that need some real sharpening so they have a reason to use it out of the box!" A little funny, but I got the chisels sharp eventually, and I'll probably use them here and there, but I certainly wouldn't buy the kit just because I wanted the chisels; they're more or less just an interesting little add-on. It's worth noting that the chisels did have plastic guards for the points and a little bag to carry them in (or the diamond stone if you wanted.) Overall, I still really loved the honing guide and wasn't sad to have the addons.

Sharpening Stone The stone is good. It is a bit on the small side but I can make it work. These stones do require a break in period. I have a set of DMT diamond stones and they also required a break in period. Anyhow, 1000 grit is still too course so I did end up finishing up sharpening on my water stones. Overall, this stone is small but good and pretty inexpensive. I do like the cover but the base tends to slip on me. I had to put it in my tail vise to use it. Honing Guide The honing guide works pretty well and is nice and solid. I like the way it works and it does fit my chisels and plane blades. I will end up building a sharpening guide for it so I can quickly set the proper distance on whatever I'm sharpening. One quick note: The roller is offset so you'll need to make sure you set the proper distance based on which side you are sharpening from. The bag it came with is terrible. It is way too small (see uploaded photo) The wheel sticks out! Chisels The chisels are not great. I have other chisels made with chromium vanadium and these chisels seem softer. I'm not sure why there are hoops on the ends as I will never hit these chisels with a mallet. The steel is soft. The workmanship around the ferrule is good on some chisels and sloppy on others. The handle is a little too thin for my hands. I wish they were a little thicker. I do like the blade guards they come with. The chisel backs were surprisingly flat on 3 of the chisels. The 4th chisel was just a little off. The chisels do fit in the zippered pouch nicely but the zipper on the pouch is not smooth.
