Not sure what the fuss is about... The brushes are actually really nice quality. The size makes them perfect for travel or everyday use. Don't be freaked out by the word "synthetic" -- we all know what those cheap-quality "bristles" feel like (the ones that practically leave claw marks across your blushes and eyeshadows then feel about as smooth as a mustache as you rake them across your skin). These are NOT those. Instead, these are soft (but not too soft) and smooth "hairs" -- not bristles. I'll update my review if I learn otherwise but these brushes give every indication that for a mere mortal/normal makeup user they'll last a long, long time (i.e. there's no need to worry about mileage as if you're a professional makeup artist...). Here's the low down: A) the brushes don't smell, B) I would have NEVER had cause to sniff the case if I hadn't read the other reviews claiming its scent was horrifying but...if I had to describe it, it smells exactly like anything else you would order online that's new (think new shoes, for example). C) As for "airing out" the case to get rid of the smell, I'd actually recommend putting the case inside a ziplock bag filled with 2 cups of dry, uncooked rice for 4-6 hours before...I'M KIDDING. By the time I finished taking pictures for you guys, the case smelled exactly like a pair of new shoes that had sat out of the box for EXACTLY as long as the case had sat out of its box while I photographed it. D) Regarding the quality/durability of the case: do I think it'll be around for me to clutch lovingly as I lie on my deathbed? NO. But if that's your expectation, you've probably sniffed a few too many newly-unwrapped products...

I was surprised by the quality of these brushes! They are soft but still carry product and blend well. I haven’t noticed any shedding or smell. The only thing I really dislike is the case. It is hard to get them out and bends the bristles back. I wish the top flap and front flap opened!

I have tried many makeup brushes throughout the years. Many of them on the more expensive side, and others on the cheeper side. I have only used this brush set on 3 occasions, and I'm already loving it. It blends well, and has a soft texture. Some brushes, normally leave a weird or strong odor, but this brush set is odorless and works great on sensitive skin. I am definitely looking forward to trying more products from the SHANY line.

I really wanted to love these brushes, as I was looking for something that was "clean" or non-toxic (whatever that means nowadays - bamboo brush sounded close enough) and I don't love these. I feel like they aren't great for powder products - I get a lot of creases/clumping after using a translucent powder with them. They're also small. But the price isn't bad!

I just took these on a trip and they were perfect! Very compact, beautiful casing, fit so nicely in my carry on without taking up any room. The brushes come in a wide variety of strength. Just perfect and fit all my needs! Love this set!

I've had these brushes for about a year and a half. They were in the "Subscribe & Save" for whatever reason at the time, which is why I found them, and I accidentally ended up with a second set a few months later. I was annoyed at first, but now I'm happy to have a second set, and was excited when I found the box today. (You find strange things when moving house!) I'm a poor grad student, so I can't spend $$$ on brushes, but these are definitely the best "budget" brushes I've ever had. I don't use all of them--plastic lash brushes are borderline useless, in my experience--but the brushes I do use, I use almost every day, and I don't know if I've ever seen a hair fall out. Still going strong a year and a half later! I'm impressed. They are a bit soft for some people, I'm sure, but they work well for me. I mostly use powder foundation and blush, and I'm really pale, so I keep my makeup fairly light. If you have a heavier hand with your makeup, the larger brushes may be too soft for you. They are of remarkably good quality for the price, though.
