Desperate to save her sister's life, Sidonie Forsythe has agreed to submit herself to a terrible fate: Beyond the foreboding walls of Castle Craven, a notorious, hideously scarred scoundrel will take her virtue over the course of seven sinful nights. Yet instead of a monster, she encounters a man like no other. And during this week, she comes to care for Jonas Merrick in ways that defy all logic-even as a dark secret she carries threatens them both. . . . SPARK A LIFETIME OF PASSIONATE SURRENDER? • Everyone Should Spend Seven Nights in a Rogue's Bed
Format: Kindle
Anna Campbell is truly a terrific writer. For those of us long in the romance tooth, she's akin to the Elaine Coffmans and Elizabeth Lowells of the genre. Since others have commented extensively on the plot, I won't. What I will comment on is every other aspect that I find worthy, since I'm a writer myself. There's predictable romance, romance that includes complete surprises with tons of plot twists, and romance that develops at a steady pace. I'd say this falls between predictable (most are by default) and more towards steady romance. What drives this book is plenty of character development and tension between the characters. I loved them both and for me, that's saying a lot. Ms. Campbell relies on a variety of literary devices to carry readers along and vivid description is one. The setting is the somewhat predictable device of a gray, almost gothic estate with the typical dark and stormy night beginning but Ms. Campbell manages to make all that fresh somehow. And how. It's Beauty and the Beast with a contest of wills thrown in. Yes, it's been done but not this way...not quite. Ms. Campbell also exceeds at dialogue. In fact, it's the thing that first drew me to her as a reader. Most of her characters talk and by that, I mean really converse. Sure, there's lovemaking galore (I should note this is not a "clean" book but a spicy one, for those who care about this sort of thing) but in between, there's honest, witty dialogue. The heroine isn't a sap. The hero has issues but there are reasons for them. Between the two characters, they manage to hash things out, not just in the bedroom, but with actual clothes on. Gotta love that in a story line. Yes, there's angst. Yes, there is miscommunication between the characters that seems a bit overreached but I'll remind consumers of the genre: it's a romance novel. Guaranteed happy ending and the generally expected trouble before the characters get there, sure. However, Ms. Campbell's vivid portrayal of the setting, her plot narrative, her portrayal of the main characters, make this a heck of a good romping read. Pick it up. See what entertainment seven nights in some rogue's bed will get you. ... show more

  • An erotic, gothic Beauty and the Beast tale
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Sidonie Forscythe's sister, Viscountess Roberta Hillbrook, lost more than she could afford to Jonas Merrick, her husband's bastard cousin and sworn enemy. Roberta agreed to pay her gambling debts by sleeping with Jonas for one week--a high cost, indeed, given his scarred face and reputation as a coldhearted reprobate, not to mention her abusive husband's wrath should he discover the infidelity. In order to save her sister, Sidonie offers herself to Jonas instead. He decides her beauty and bravery will make a week with her almost as pleasurable as cuckolding his enemy. However, he doesn't want a terrified martyr in his bed; he wants a willing lover. As he sets out seducing Sidonie, he begins to fall into love with her wit and compassion, and she begins to see the wounded but generous man who hides behind a scarred and hardened countenance. But can he forgive her for withholding information that could change his life? And can she give up her dream of independence and put him first, above her beloved sister? When I began reading a sample of the book online, I thought, "Oh, no way." It's overwritten, and the use of the cliché "like a knife through butter" in the first couple pages was almost a deal breaker. But I'm a sucker for Beauty and the Beast stories, and I quickly got into the gothic mood. The writing seemed to even out, though it does boarder on melodramatic throughout. The characters are well developed, and I liked that the heroine doesn't immediately abandon her plans when she falls in love. She makes complex ethical decisions and faces the fall out. The characters are well developed (even Sidonie's unlikeable but sympathetic sister) and seem authentic in their reactions to events, and the happy ending feels hard won and not falsely perfect. ... show more

  • Seven nights? Yes, please.
Format: Kindle
So is this book (1) Beauty and the Beast redux, (2) dastardly blackguard bastard wreaks further revenge on rightful heir, (3) innocent miss sacrifices herself to save her abused sister, or (4) unrepentent rake introduces proper lady to passion? How about a combination of all these plus more, more, more. The Hero and heroine are characters with so many layers reading this book was like opening presents. Each confrontation brought out further aspects of their personalities and behaviors. The H was cruel and cutting but also tormented and hurting. He was surprisingly generous and tender. The heroine was innocent without being grossly naive. She was intelligent and strong, willing to make sacrifices for her family yet unwilling to be degraded or a mere pawn. She was soft-hearted and kind, and confused by her new reality versus what she thought she knew. Both characters waffled in their feelings toward each other and often traded barbed comments interspersed with compliments. A lesser author would likely have been unable to so deftly illustrate each layer in her characters but Campbell reveals the inner turmoil and confused thoughts the H and h had for each other. Both had preconceptions of the other and their situation and both came to new opinions and feelings as they grew closer and learned more about the other. Both thought they had their futures mapped out and that they knew themselves to be unchangeable. Both were wrong. This was a beautiful and remarkable story of how two people found each other in the most unlikely of situations. There are several secondary characters and subplots but to speak of them here might give too much away. Suffice it to say I cannot wait to read the tales of Sir Richard and Duke Cam. I encourage others to read this book and watch two characters turn a distasteful and disreputable beginning into a journey of discovery of themselves and each other. They both behave badly, they both make mistakes, and they are perfect for each other. ... show more
