  • A profound and timely collection—essential reading for anyone navigating today's divided world
Seeing the Other Side is more than just a collection of essays—it’s a deeply personal, psychologically rich, and scientifically grounded invitation to rethink how we engage with others, especially when perspectives clash. Dr. Mona Weissmark weaves together her unique personal history as the daughter of Holocaust survivors with decades of academic research and teaching on diversity, bias, justice and memory. The result is a book that feels both intimate and expansive. What makes this collection stand out is how skillfully Weissmark blends memoir with rigorous analysis. Whether she’s recounting her friendship with the daughter of a German pastor or exploring the legacy of trauma across generations, every essay encourages readers to question assumptions, embrace empathy, and think scientifically—even about our emotions. Her “Science of Diversity” method offers a refreshing and effective alternative to conventional (and often polarizing) approaches to diversity. This is not a preachy book. It’s thoughtful, challenging, and full of insight. In a time where conversations across divides can feel impossible, Seeing the Other Side offers hope—and a roadmap—for how to begin. ... show more

  • Thoughtful, personal and relevant
I really enjoyed reading this book. Seeing The Other Side: Shifting Perceptions isn’t just another collection of academic essays. It’s thoughtful, personal, and relevant. Dr. Mona Sue Weissmark brings something rare to the table: real research from her professional experience at Harvard University mixed with her own story as the daughter of Holocaust survivors. You can tell she’s not just writing from a professor’s desk—she’s lived a lot of what she’s sharing. I had the pleasure of taking Dr. Weissmark’s Psychology of Diversity course at Harvard Extension School this past summer, and reading this book felt like being back in one of her lectures, which were so interesting. She has a unique ability to make complex ideas feel accessible and meaningful. The book brings that same energy—mixing her professional research with personal stories. What I liked most about Seeing the Other Side is that it doesn’t just talk about changing the way we think, thinking more objectively and scientifically, and allowing the other side to talk and to be heard—it actually shows you how to do it. It’s practical, but not preachy. ... show more

  • Insightful and Transformative
The book leads you through a journey of self discovery that optimizes scientific thinking. It shows how we can approach polarized topics in an agenda-free method. It's a way of thinking that can be used beyond academia and can be practiced in real life. It teaches us how to effectively step away from biases into a fair and evaluative approach so we can converse effectively with others and make decisions that are backed up by evidence. Not only does this book make you a better communicator, it also makes you a more empowered decision maker. Mixing both personal experiences and research outcomes makes it a very interesting read. The language is very accessible and easy to apply without losing nuance. All in all, I highly recommend this book! ... show more
