Description

Through the eyes of two wise and experienced therapists, The Other Couch: Discovering Women’s Wisdom in Therapy explores the lives of 36 spirited women who struggle and overcome their challenges with courage, resilience, and commitment. The authors focus on the wisdom patients bring to their therapists as they introduce women diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder, multiple personality disorder, chronic suicidal ideation, and substance abuse. Each chapter conveys an important life lesson about the human condition and touches on situations such as abusive relationships, cheating spouses, addicted children, the death of loved ones, transgender issues, and more. Patricia Martin and Helene Houston understand that each of us has an intense craving to be understood by others. These stories are meant to inspire because they bring new life, breath, and spirit into the world. The Other Couch was written as a tribute, and a gift, to women everywhere. Read more

  • Stories of Wise Women: Therapists and Patients
I just finished reading this inspiring book by two wise women whom I know. Helene and I have been fellow book club members forever. What a treat to have Patricia and Helene at our book club meeting tonight to tell us about the process of birthing this work that reflects their combined decades of experience as therapists. The stories of the women in the book are so varied, and I love the way the authors interweave their patient's stories with their own life experiences and reflections on topics such as forgiveness, sisterhood, motherhood, etc. The reader gets the sense of the therapist and patient growing together and the respect for each individual story comes through loud and clear. At the end of each chapter is invaluable information and resources should the reader wish to learn more about the condition in order to support someone who is having similar problems, as well as organizations for group support. Well written stories about encouraging life lessons ... show more

  • Compassion and insight
These moving accounts of a group of women's journeys through therapy are told with care and compassion. The stories become even more compelling as the therapists share what each experience has meant to them. With candor and a sense of humor they give the reader a look into their own vulnerabilities, which they reassuringly assert are part of the human condition. ... show more

As owners of a black Labrador retriever, from labs4rescue, we often ask Who rescued whom? Martin and Houston insinuate themselves so deeply and compassionately into each woman's story that their reactions and solutions are equally important as their subjects. Linda K. Fuller, PhD
