Description

Kids, this is your boat. And what a performer! We designed Jr. to be nimble and maneuverable for the smaller paddler. Extremely efficient for its size, this lightweight kayak glides well and tracks straight. You’ll also find plenty of stability for those family splash fights. Of course small arms can get tired after all of that paddling and splashing, so we also included our innovative Tag Along Tow System, making it easy to tow ‘em to shore if need be.

  • well worth it if you have access to lakes and places to paddle
Awesome. These are nicely molded polyetheylene kayaks. They're light (because they're small), durable, and super easy to paddle. These are easy even for kids to paddle. Although they're best for just having fun, we've gone distances with them too. My 8 year old can keep up with my canoe paddling a mile. I tow my 7 year old some of the time. After the first mile, I've towed both (as a train). Flotation is good, especially since they have foam in both ends. They're not easy to swamp, but they certainly won't sink. They are not easy to re-enter, but this is something that takes skill with any boat. My boys have been successful re-entering several times, but it can be difficult and there has been times they failed without help. Always wear a life jacket, and never go alone. It comes with a styrofoam billet in the front which adds extra flotation. It's a good idea, but not durable as kids will kick it with their feet down there and it will come apart (it's just white styrofoam). I removed the billets (from two kayaks) and replaced them with Polyform A-0 buoys secured to an eyebolt. I replaced the lag screw that holds the billets in with an eyebolt. The foam in the stern is unreachable and unlikely to be damaged. I wonder if it could hold muck in there, but haven't had an issue so far. My wife at 5'1" and 100 pounds fits these nicely but a boat with slightly more leg room would be a little better. They easily hold her weight though. Even I fit them at 5'8" and 140 pounds, but I am really too big to fit the short length. I can fully straighten my legs, but my feet are all the way to narrow part of the bow. My weight causes the bow to ride too low in the water. Old Towne limits them to 100 to 115 pounds, which is about right. I would also put the height limit at 5 feet, but a heavier and taller person can fit in a pinch. Because I have paddled these myself, I can say they are a delight to paddle. They're very fast and efficient, and they turn well. Of course they're very short and narrow for my size, so that is not surprising. However, I would not want a wider, longer boat for my boys as it would be harder to paddle and harder to turn. They're expensive compared to cheaper two-piece or sit-on-top kayaks carried by stores that sell lots of cheap imports. I think they're worth it, especially if you have the opportunity to do a significant amount of paddling with your kids. They're probably too expensive for a beach toy that you use for a once a year trip. We've been paddling with them at least 7 times in the last two months since we got them, and will probably go another 7 times in the next two months before winter. I paddle a canoe myself so I can fit my wife and I and our dog, plus any cargo we want. The canoe is a lot of fun too but has tradeoffs. It is harder to paddle. It is much more affected by wind. It is a beast to carry (it's an Old Towne and polyethylene also, about 80 pounds). Even though it is a smaller canoe (14'7") I could fit my family of four, our big dog, and some cargo in it. Even so, I think it was well worth it to get the kids their own boats. They have far more fun and its more motivating for them to go. ... show more

  • Great buy for my 6 year old.
Color: Sunrise
We bought this kayak about a year ago, for my then 6 year old son. He is now 7 1/2. He does so incredibly well in the kayak. It is easy for him to maneuver and paddle on his own with no assistance. He has plenty of room for it to grow with him, but he maneuvers it wonderfully all on his own. The tow strap on the front of the kayak is a nice feature, but you definitely need to figure out the best way to use it for which type of water you are on. It did not work well on a small branch of a river we paddle on, it caused him to hit the bank and tip out of his kayak, which in turn ended up being a really great learning experience for him and it definitely didn't stop him from getting back into it to keep going. It is lightweight enough that when I don't have any additional help to get kayaks to the water, I can handle it on my own/with him. We love it. We plan on buying a second one for our daughter next year, when she will be 6. We have tried to put her in it to see how she fit size-wise and it has been too big for her yet. Definitely recommend. ... show more

Color: Sunrise
This little kayak is awesome. My 6 year-old son and 7-year old nephew had no trouble using this boat from their very first outing. Both never kayaked before but they are now huge fans. The kayak tracks well - doesn't spin like the others we have tried. The seat is comfortable enough for the shorter trips kids tend to take anyway and the overall stability is great. The price is worth it (half of it is really shipping) but with a 115 lb limit we will get many years of use before we hit that limit. The tag alone tow rope is also a nice feature. We've used it often when facing a fairly hard headwind or just when tired little arms couldn't (or wouldn't) oar anymore. Highly recommend! ... show more

  • Perfect transition out of Dad's boat!
We absolutely LOVE the Heron, Jr... We've had our li'l guy on our laps in a boat since he was a toddler. I had run out of space and I kept knocking him in the head with the paddle... it was time for him to fly the nest! The boat is the perfect weight for my 5 yr old to tag along behind me; I barely know he's there. It gives him the chance to work on his paddle skills without being frustrated that he's not side-by-side with mom and dad. Design and construction is Old Town typical... it should hold up for years to come! ... show more

  • Excellent choice for the little ones!
Absolutely love this kayak. Perfect for the little guys -- both my son (9) and daughter (7) had their first time kayak experience on the lake and on the river. The first time out for each they were able to maneuver quite easily given the small size. We got a small paddle, which was also great for them. Definitely recommend this for small paddlers. ... show more

  • Outstanding kayak for kids
I recently got my 7 y/o son into kayaking and found this kayak to be the perfect size for him. It is extremely stable so you don't have to worry as much about tipping over, and is easy to maneuver and tracks very well. An added bonus is the already attached tow line which I've already had to use on a couple of occasions. This is the perfect platform to get a youngster involved in kayaking ... show more

  • Excellent kayak for a beginner
Excellent kayak for a beginner. Super stable so it builds confidence in the Jr paddler, and well made to inspire confidence in their parents. Keep the tow rope under wraps, amazing how 'tired' they get once they know about it.
