This book seriously over advertised it's content. Sure it's got 150 pages of color photography, but I wouldn't call them gorgeous. A good half of the pics are blurry, grainy or dark, and of generally poor quality. Amateur pics to be sure. There is a section labeled Construction Details, however there are no actual construction details. There is some text on each page, though it doesn't really explain or describe anything in any detail. Many projects are duplicated between sections, and the difference between projects (regarding overhead structure) is minimal...the major differences lie in the overall landscape design, though this is not really discussed. I bought this book looking for a variety of overhead structures to help show clients the many, many possibilities. The Sunset Trellis and Arbor book does a far superior job, and includes many construction details and detailed instructions for the DIY homeowner and designer alike. This book fell short in so many ways (I am returning it). Quality of paper, quality of photographs, quality of content all below average to poor...definitely NOT worth the $30 price tag. ... show more

As a homeowner looking to upgrade a patio cover, I have found this book extremely helpful in providing design ideas that I can share with my contractor. Sounds like Scott has built quite a few off these over the years! I would have never thought of some of the things he has included. We bought several of Cohen's books due to an upcoming pool/outdoor kitchen project and this is probably my favorite. Good balance of photos and instructions.
