  • Aloha Pear-shaped ukulele by Schylling musical toy so cute! Squeeeeeeee.
Style: Schylling Ukelele
This product is the Schylling Ukulele, it is pear-shaped (as opposed to pineapple shaped like some ukes) and it has 4 strings, and geared tuning pegs which don't slip like friction pegs. Not that I hate friction pegs, but they're not always accurate. Anyway I bought this item because I was looking for a replacement for another, similar toy-grade ukulele that had gone missing some years ago. This one is very attractive, made of heavy laminate varnished wood with cool hula graphics in red and green! It has a thick neck and somewhat high action, which can be adjusted if you want to remove the nut and cut down the neck slot a little bit, or you can just tune it lower pitched (as I usually do for most ukuleles) and use a capo on it, that will lessen string height and you won't have to press on the strings as hard. I am a little bit skeptical of these bright, shiny red plastic strings on it, I did get it to be "in tune" but they are very stretchy right now because it's new. Eventually I will replace the strings. Mine came with 2 replacement strings, the 2 thinner outer ones, G and A, the ones most likely to break. This ukulele will serve me well as a toy/novelty/practice/lawnchair uke, and anyone who buys one of these must take into account that yes this is a for-fun item and not a professional grade ukulele. It came in a decorative cardboard display box which would look nice if you're just going to set it up on a shelf to look at, but it is actually playable and I'm pleased with it so far...I played Kumba Yah, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, The Hare Krishna Mantra, and Tiptoe Thru The Tulips. Oh, FYI, it will need a case if you remove it from the box, there is no case or gig bag included. As for giving it to a kid, I would say, maybe this is more of a collectable or perhaps a cosplay item than a kid's toy, just because it seems like a kid would break those red plastic strings in about 3 minutes. This is more of a grownup's retro style toy accessory, but that's just my opinion. My toy, mine mine mine...(age 53 going on 6) Thank you for reading. ... show more

  • Super Cute But Unplayable
Style: Schylling Ukelele
I bought this as a decorative piece because I loved the design. I'm actually super happy with it and didn't expect it to sound very good. But you have to know it's really not a good ukulele for a child. Musically, it's actually worse than I expected, and I didn't expect much. It's basically unplayable. You can tune it, but when you fret the strings it doesn't actually make the right notes. This seems to be because the action is set super high, and the strings are very stretchy. So if you fret a note you are bending the string quite a bit, which alters the pitch wildly. It's okay for an infant to bang around on, but should not be used to teach music to a child. Probably you could get the action lower with a little work, and put a proper set of strings on it, and might be able to get it to play in tune. But I doubt if it has any internal bracing, the bridge seems to be attached just with a couple of screws, and I don't know if it would take the tension of being tuned properly with real strings. ~ ~ ~ For just a few dollars more you can get a proper ukulele that plays well and sounds great and is suitable for a child. ~ ~ ~ This should not be used as a musical instrument, so please don't expect that. But as a decorative piece it's cute as heck and I'm glad I bought it. ... show more

  • Great Gift for a Two-year Old!
Style: Tin Drum
My daughter LOVES music, especially drums. She will make a drum out of anything, and is mesmerized whenever they show drummers on Sesame Street. I got her this drum for Christmas and it was a BIG hit. The size is perfect for her age and size. She figured out how to get it around her neck and would walk all over the place with it on, drumming with the included drumsticks, a spoon from her play kitchen, even her hands. The colors are bright and cheery, the top and bottom of the drum are clear so you can see three primary-colored balls that roll around inside. The sound is like a real drum - no muted, tinny, or lame sound here. If you buy this, don't expect to have a quiet home! The only thing I found wrong with this drum was its durability. My daughter was wearing the drum around her neck and walked into the corner of our coffee table. The corner of the table dented the top of the drum which caused it to cave in, the blue band holding the top to slip off, and the drum pretty much was destroyed. I tried to put it together but it just wouldn't fit. However this drum is so cute, and so loved, we bought our daughter a new one. This weekend the drum survived her birthday - five kids under five years of age fighting over the drum, wearing it, dropping it, sliding it across the floor. It held up, looks great, sounds great, and really inspires creativity in kids. I think it's important to get your child passionate about music at an early age, and that comes from REAL instruments, not fake plastic ones with batteries. This classic drum is near-perfect! ... show more
