  • Compact, easy to install, sounds wonderful.
Disclaimer: I'm a total wannabe musician. I started playing the bass a couple of years ago -well past my prime. I'm not classically trained or even informally trained to be completely honest. However, I've been lucky enough to actually play for audiences from time to time and this little unit makes life easy. In the past I've had to mess with trying to place a microphone in front of the bass when amplification was needed. Feedback and bumping the mic were always a problem. Now I just plug in when I need to. That's why I bought this pick-up in the first place, but what about the pick-up itself? The installation was easy enough. I had to enlarge the slot in the bridge a bit but that was about it. The pre-amp attaches with velcro right under the tail piece and is completely out of the way. I leave it in place even when not plugged in. Battery installation/replacement is a breaze. The shrink wrapping on the cables give it a rugged feel and I'm not worried when it gets knocked around a bit. Sound reproduction seems fine. Of course any signal sounds different when electronically amplified so the sound depends on what you plug into more than anything. I've been pleased with the sound running to a dedicated bass amp as well as running through the main PA. A little EQ tweak or two and I'm good to go. I'm sure if I were recording in a studio I'd probably go back to a microphone but the rules are different in a live show. ... show more

  • Awesome preamp with a lot of gain
Awesome product I am using it as I type this review oh, playing a gig right now! I used to bring an amplifier to help boost the signal of my upright Bass and with this preamp I can personally plug into a powered speaker and an effects pedal good to go!

  • Bluegrass Rules
I recently purchased the RB-1A pickup for my upright bass. I play bass in a bluegrass band called Cross Creek Bluegrass Band from dickson,tn( crosscreekbb.com) My bass was made in the Czech Republic, to german specs. It sounds great and the RB 1A keeps the sound real. It has the mids rolled off on the pickup and this really keeps the acoustic sound for Bluegrass. The RB 1A is awesome. It has really good warm bottom tones that are clear and the treble tones are great. I am totally pleased with this pickup. Whether I'm playing straight through the board or my amp it gives me an awesome sound 2nd to none. I'm thinking of getting a Sans amp to see how that will shape things. Don't need it but I like to experiment with different stuff. If you're thinking of trying the RB-1A, I think you will be totally satisfied. B... ... show more

  • Great.
I had to choose between the RB-2A or RB-1A but I ran out of cash and had to settle for the RB-1A which was 40 bucks cheaper. I was worried that the slap wouldn't be picked up, but it does. It also made my bass sound louder. I have crappy weedwacker strings and the E is dead, but this pickup amplifies if pretty damn good thru my amp. I did have to file down my bridge a bit, but it wasn't too bad. The velcro is very strong. ... show more

  • Works like a charm
Took us a little bit of a learning curve to completely figure this out. After 2 errors on our part we figured out 1. the cable must be very firmly plugged into it (until you hear a click) and 2. the sensor will NOT work in the heart part of the bridge. Use the sides! Sound is good (considering the price) and sure beats playing but not being able to be heard on stage. ... show more

  • Schatten RB-1A Upright/Double Bass Pickup w/ Preamp
This device works great thru an amp or thru a sound system. It gives my old upright bass such a smooth and deep sound that folks who are not musicians notice and comment on how good it sounds. Easy to install, not noticeable, and easy to change battery. Works well for me.
