  • AVOID THIS PRINTER
Style: VersiFlex SG500
The fact that Sawgrass can remotely shut your printer off or brick your printer completely through an update because they don’t like the type of ink you’re using is sickening. Don’t use Sawgrass. I highly highly regret ever buying a Sawgrass printer. If I were you I would do everything in your power to get a different printer before choosing the Sawgrass printer. They are a very scummy company. They’re not worth your money. ... show more

So I have zero experience with this stuff. I'm starting it as a new hobby. That being said, this printer is very user friendly. So far the transfers have been beautiful. The set up was very easy as well

  • DON’T BUY SAWGRASS!!

Wish I could write negative reviews. This company is a joke. You are handcuffed to their wildly overpriced inks. If you use non sawgrass ink, bricks your printer. Worst greedy printer company there is. DON’T BUY THEIR PRODUCTS!!!!!

  • Really impressed with how much this printer can do!
Style: VersiFlex SG500
I’ve been using the Sawgrass VersiFlex for a few days now, and I have to say I didn’t expect it to be this versatile right out of the box. Setup was pretty straightforward, and installing the ink was simple - the guide made it easy, and each cartridge is color-coded. I appreciated that there was no need to force anything into place - everything just clicked together. I ran my first print on a 100% cotton shirt, and it came out great, way softer than vinyl and honestly closer to screen printing in feel. After that, I tried printing on uncoated wood using the same setup and got great results again. The colors transferred beautifully, and the whole process from loading the media to pressing the final piece felt really dialed in. Being able to do cotton, uncoated surfaces, and even sublimation all on one system without switching inks is amazing. The quality and ease of use have been great so far, and I haven’t had any issues with prints, clogging, or smudging. This setup is exactly what I needed for quick project turnaround without having to invest in another printer. If you’re looking to get into different kinds of transfers, I’d definitely recommend this. ... show more

  • Sublimation colors seem faded
Style: VersiFlex SG500
Was so excited to get the Sawgrass. I wanted one for a long time. It seemed like it was pretty easy to set up, although I still haven’t figured out the wireless printing part on it. Faster printing than other sublimation printers that I’ve had. Still need to play with the time and temperature for the pressing and how hard the pressure is to get things to turn out well. I like that you can also use sublimation paper with it and not have to use just the flexi so far I really like it. I’ll use it more and if anything changes, I’ll update the review further. I do also like that the paper goes inside and lace flat on other printers that goes on the outside and causes the edges to occur, which can affect the print so this is a very nice way for it to hold the paper to prevent that. Update I used it will sublimation paper and compared colors to my converted sublimation printer seems the color on the sawgrass is lighter and more fades where as my converted printer the colors are brighter and more rich in color. Not sure if the sawgrass would be worth the money to be honest Added another photo the cup on the left was done with my converted printer the cup on the right was done with the Sawgrass. You can see the color difference in the pink bright compared to faded. ... show more

  • Loving it more every day. . . give it a chance and you'll see why.
Style: VersiFlex SG500
UPDATE 7/9 : I feel like I needed to revisit this review after spending a bit more time with the system. I bumped up my review to out of 5 stars. No one makes one like it. . . so it will come at a premium price. As a hobbyist, I've worked with sublimation printers that have been converted for well over 15 years. I've worked with Epson primarily and really like their printers. I've tried almost every paper out there to get that perfect feel on a cotton shirt and it always leave me wanting a better experience. The prints have customarily been too thick on the backing material and gross to wear, or the shirts crack after a few washes and they often fade way too quick. I'm a hobbyist, not a professional retailer so cost is hugely important. That's the angle I come from in this review and update. To be fair, Sawgrass is really the first to offer a self weeding option for cotton using sublimation. That's big. Are there going to be some tradeoffs? Yes. Price at this point is one of them. It's expensive. They're the first on the scene. You still can't print on black. If you're used to printing in one day and applying the next, this is not the machine for you unless you're willing to make the adjustment of printing and pressing in succession. As far as longevity. . . what does the 6 month fade remarks in their documentation really mean? Does it begin to fade in roughly 30 washes or 6 months or does it get wiped out after that point. I sat and thought about that for a while. The true test will come by actually doing it. I'm enjoying the machine much more than when I first received it. There's a bit of a learning curve, but if you're patient and have the resources to pay a bit more for your projects, then it's the best alternative on the market today and here's why. Printing sublimation ink in a converted printer means that I often need to run that print through my Silhouette to cut the image in order to prepare it for application. It's not self weeding. So yes, you may lose time because each print has to be applied while wet, but I'm not setting up a second machine to cut out the design now. That's a fair statement. I anticipate getting a lot of use out of this machine, probably more so than my other for the simple reason that it took out a full step in the overall process. And yes, when the time comes to replace the ink, I will complain loudly. Hopefully, there will be some reputable 3rd party vendors already looking at filling the void for ink replacements if Sawgrass doesn't make their line a little more affordable. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I really, really wanted to love the latest and greatest release from Sawgrass. It's a Sawgrass. They're workhorses. Quality is always top notch and I love some features you're not going to find on the competition. . .self cleaning being one of them. This is what makes me so upset. Sawgrass has such a great reputation and yet. . . they're just so darn expensive to operate. This is an entirely new technology in the world of sublimation. The ink setup really threw me off because there is no black. The clear cartridge is actually the magic behind the ability of the printer to print on cotton. It's a sort of binding agent if you will. The three other cartridges combine to bring you your blacks, which were actually pretty darn nice on the light cotton shirts I applied the prints to. The setup was really easy. You just have to download their software to run the printer. Now. . . the not so good parts about owning this machine. The ink cartridges are crazy expensive and you have zero alternative but to buy them from Sawgrass. We're talking 100 dollars per cartridge. I don't know if they ever have sales on them, but a roughly 31ml cartridge is going to make those shirts pretty darn expensive. Honestly, for that price, if you're printing a lot of shirts for a family event or friends, there are online services which will print out your design for probably less than what you spent on ink to print your own. They send the printed vinyl to your house and you apply them with a heat press. It will probably also last much longer. This is what I just don't get. Why put out this beautiful piece or equipment with technology that now allows you to apply sublimation to cotton as well as other materials, but then advise that the print on a shirt might last up to 6 months. Yes, I did not make a mistake. The best you can hope for is 6 months before your printed shirt fades away. I'm sorry, but I don't know how that is considered a normal expectation. Keep in mind ink cartridges also have expiration dates, so you can count on adding at least another $400 to $800 per year just to use this printer. That's a big wow for me. The other thing that you may find somewhat unsettling, is that you cannot allow the ink on the paper to dry. It must be applied while the ink is still wet. This will require that you have your heat press ready to go before you print out a design. It took me much longer to print several shirts for what you can imagine would be the obvious challenges. You'd also better get that design on straight on your shirt the first time because you can't move it once it's down. You'll smear the ink. We did lose a couple of shirts for that reason and for accidentally touching the design as it came out of the printer. I don't think anyone has the answer to sublimation on cotton without some compromise and cost at this point. This Sawgrass print setup is considered the Cadillac in their lineup, even if the print doesn't last very long. Would I buy this machine if I was not a tester? I don't think I could afford to. . . If the ink was in line with other manufacturers, namely their competition, I would buy it in a heartbeat. It's a nice addition to the printers I currently have. I'm hoping Sawgrass gets realistic about the price of their inks. Competitive is not something they can be accused of. They have a great product but it's too costly to operate without going to 3rd party vendors, which often don't work because of the chips used in the cartridges, and it also voids your warranty. So. . . if you can afford to indulge, you're patient and confident in your skills, and expecting longevity from your shirts is not a big deal, then you're going to fall in love with this machine. ... show more
