  • Glass one works great! No more wasted wine or failed pump devices
Color: Clear Glass with white accents
We've used all the various wine savers - the devices that have special plugs to replace the cork then suck out the air (start out ok but weaken and begin to fail after a few months) in their many different iterations. This looked hokey, but to our surprise and delight it works quite well - the glass one at least. It's a pretty simple concept, it's air that makes the wine turn & that's why the redneck side of my family loves their box wine - no air gets in so it can last for weeks. We're not fans of boxed wine & so we're always on the hunt for a good wine preserver as we aren't likely to finish off a whole bottle between the two of us during a weeknight. Half bottles are great but selection is limited and our current favorites don't offer half bottles: Meiomi Pinot Noir, Haraszthy old vine zin and Plungerhead zin - yummmmm :o) This funky looking carafe has made it easy for us to open a bottle when all we want is a small glass with dinner & we don't have to worry about wasting the rest or trying to slosh down the rest & feeling poorly the next day (lightweight, yes...). With this carafe you put in the wine, put in the float and the float actually floats on the top of the wine having pushed out all the air touching the wine and keeping it out with it's rubber seal. The extra lid with seal on top of the bottle is just for looks or for funzies I guess, as theoretically it should work just fine with just the bottle and the float. I do notice moisture in the section between the float and the top lid & I'm not sure if that's good or bad but so far it's not caused any problems for us. We like it enough that we're buying one for my husbands parents who are super winey folks - you know...winey as in they like their wine, not that their whiners who complain (although if their wine turns then they will indeed whine, as would anyone, yes?). The reviews seem to indicate that the plastic version doesn't hold up, which is a bummer as sometimes having a glass wine container isn't optimal (when folks have been drinking and are tipsy, outside or at the beach, etc.) but then again, if you're going to have wine at the beach or at a gathering you're likely to finish off the bottle (there's always someone trying to pour the last little dribbles of a bottle into their glass, right??) and so I suppose in those situations this carafe isn't really needed. I think I'd also like it if it were fatter and shorter instead of tall and thin - my worry is that it might tip and shatter, whereas if it was short and chubby it would be less likely to do so (I realize there's a joke there as well but I'm leaving that one alone...). SUMMARY: Glass one works great, plastic version questionable. ... show more

  • They work
Color: Clear Glass with white accents
I now have 3 and your wine stays fresh for a week. Be sure to let it breathe and open the flavors before placing the floater in the container. I like to open a red the day before I need it and let it breathe for a little longer then put the floater in and seal the top until the next day

  • Great product, but even the plastic ones break
This is my fourth Savino decanter. I have always gotten the plastic because of the lower price and because it seems like it should be less breakable than the glass. Unfortunately, the plastic breaks too. Two of our previous (plastic) Savinos broke when someone bumped the empty decanter (quite top-heavy when empty) and it fell off the table onto a wooden floor. In both cases, the flared "collar" top broke off the cylindrical base. Our third carafe broke in the same place when someone unscrewed the lid wrong. The lid is quite difficult to "lock" and "unlock." (You twist the lid slightly when closing/opening the carafe in order to lock out the air - but the "lock" is quite stiff, and it's hard to tell which way you are supposed to twist.) Our third carafe broke when a guest inadvertently twisted the lid the wrong way, and the entire top (lid plus flared collar) broke off at the seam where it's glued to the cylindrical base. The carafe is easy to clean (we always hand wash ours). However, over time, the plastic takes on a reddish tinge from the red wine. Not a big deal, it just ends up looking a bit less nice than when it was new. After three broken "shatterproof" carafes, why on earth did I buy a fourth one?? Because there's nothing else out there (that we can find) that does such a good job of keeping wine fresh, simply and beautifully, without fuss or vacuum pumps or pressurized gas. With Savino, we can keep enjoying nice bottled wines, even though we almost never finish a bottle in one sitting. Without Savino... well, boxed wines *have* gotten better, but the variety's just not there... so I will keep buying Savino carafes even though ours keep breaking. ... show more

  • This wine saver really works!
This wine saver is very easy to use and really does preserve the wine better than any other method I have tried. It is easy to use and look attractive on the table. I have both a glass and an acrylic version. My only challenge was cleaning red wine colouration from underneath the silicone seal. I found soaking it in salty water for about 20 mins and then rinsing thoroughly solved the problem. ... show more

  • Dont buy it!
Color: Clear Glass with white accents
This thing is terrible, I had read about this wine preserver a few years ago and didn't pull the trigger until recently. The week after I received it I noticed a poor seal from the float and contacted the manufacturer. They sent me a relatively quick email response that everything would be fine but if it wasn't working that they would happily replace it. I thought ok, great and opened a nice bottle of GSM to use in the preserver, it was bad within 48 hours :( Since that bottle I have tried a few other Merlot's that I used to just use a expansion top and put in the fridge to get a day or two out of them.. the Savino cant even do better than that. I emailed the manufacturer 3 weeks ago and they responded that they would be happy to send me out a new carafe.. .but then no response to repeated emails for 3 weeks which is outside of my amazon return window (closed on October 5th). That feels like a delaying tactic to me so I don't return the product to amazon. I have since purchased the Private Preserve gas can preserver and while I haven't had a chance to test it extensively It works with my existing expansion tops so if it gets me more than 48 hours for a bottle then I am good to go. Other annoyances about the savino are that the wine pours off of the wide spout and then leaks down into the rubber ring below the spout... if you are holding wine in the carafe it will very quickly look sloppy as wine pools and drys there.. ... show more
