  • Just a solid phone all around
All I've ever wanted was a plain android phone with timely security updates, no hardware issues, and no bloatware. I owned a note 2 and a note 4, but switched to a Nexus 5 and then a Pixel 3XL because of the bloatware, the incredibly slow security updates, and the fact that Samsung was going with a sealed battery on future phones. Unfortunately, the google phones have major hardware issues. The microphone on both my old google phones were bad, both batteries failed after 2 years, and the batteries barely lasted a day to begin with. So I'm back to the Samsung Note series. So far, this phone has been solid - all normal capabilities work well. It has a strong Bluetooth signal compared with my pixel. It has good mobile internet - where most phones (including my old google phones) have spotty internet in my area, this phone manages to pick up a surprisingly consistent signal. Wifi works fine too, of course. The screen looks good, and it has no pointlessly large notch at the top like my pixel had. The camera is much better than my pixel 3xl ever was (not that I actually care about that). The battery lasts about 50% longer than my nexus or pixel phones did when they were new, which is just enough for me. And finally, the bloatware can either be removed entirely or at least moved into folders where it mostly stays out of the way. I have only three complaints. First is that notifications show up once in a while to tell me that there is an update available on the galaxy store for the apps that I never installed, never used, and never wanted on my phone. I just can't quite explain how incredibly annoying this is. Seriously Samsung, you lost out on my business for two cycles because of this kind of stuff. Its much better than it used to be, but really just get rid of the bloatware or get it entirely out of the way and you'll make more money! Second, the battery is not removable. Obviously, I don't care too much about the size of the phone because I'm buying a note. Please Samsung, give us removable batteries again. The note 7 would never have been such a big problem if people could replace their batteries. You can be certain Samsung lost some business there. Third, its a pain to root the phone. I don't root my phone unless its absolutely necessary, but something I really appreciated about my nexus and pixel was that rooting was built in - no need to try to get around the phone manufacturer. Google just lets you do it. Why do you try to keep us from rooting our phones, Samsung? Especially since I'm buying the phone unlocked. ... show more

  • A Top Tier Overpriced Cell Phone for $196
When this smart phone came out in 2020, it was Samsung's flagship; and the product retailed for $1,000. The price has gone down to $700. Unfortunately, it was not "cutting edge." In fact, the consumer was buying an average cell phone. The body was plastic. The refresh speed was 60Hz; and there was no MicroSD expandability. . Through time, users reported many common problems: buggy fingerprint scanner, battery drain, overheating, and Bluetooth connectivity issues. Add changing consumer demands, Samsung decided to discontinue the Note Series. . Despite these issues, I purchased it because of price. A customer return was being sold at $196. After a few days usage, I liked it. The screen was huge. At age 74, I needed a big screen. 5G was faster than 4G. The stylist was useful for quick note taking. The unit had a "previous screen button," a valuable feature that was missing on my ex-Google 4a. . My biggest hope was that it would last longer than 1.5 years. My previous experiences were bad. Cheap Chinese no-brand name models, under $150, lasted under a year. The worst broke within five months. My Google 4A lived for 1.5 years. . These models were used sparingly: GPS, confirming logins, and car trips. The units were ON for less than an hour per day. They were OFF for the remaining time. . Internet sources reported that Samsungs have a durability rate from three to six years. So, I have high hopes. ... show more

  • Flawed, but stylish and high performance
Overall this phone is above average. There are a few things that I would like to see improved in future Galaxy Note models. 1) More accurate face recognition and fingerprint unlock. Don't get me wrong it works above average, but it is still not as described. I originally bought a screen protector for this phone and was using face recognition for my security lock, but I had to find different lighting and angles just for it to recognize me. I tried recapturing my face, but still there was no change. For those reasons I had to switch to the fingerprint instead which is why I am giving it 3 stars. 2) So the second problem I have is with the fingerprint sensor. You're probably wondering why didn't I use the fingerprint to begin with, right? Well, the reason I chose not to was because you cannot have a screen protector and use the fingerprint sensor. The only screen protectors that somewhat work, emphasis on somewhat, are ones that have a thumb print cut out in them which not only leave my phone screen vulnerable but it also takes away from the allure of a flagship phone. Another problem is that the fingerprint sensor isn't so "ultrasonic". I have to reposition my thumb typically three times before it will even read my fingerprint. I have tried redoing my fingerprint and using different fingers, there is no difference. And yes, at times, it reads my fingerprint the first time. I had an LG Stylo 5 before this and the fingerprint sensor which was NOT ultrasonic was faster and more accurate than that of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 5G. It's also worth noting that the LG Stylo 4 can be bought at $100, which again goes back to the allure of a flagship phone. I expect more for $800. So now my phone is completely vulnerable and if the screen breaks I'm looking at paying about $300 to replace it, which is about 40% of the cost of the phone. You will need a good phone case, preferably a hybrid that has a raised top. For this reason I give the fingerprint sensor 1 star. Performance-wise this phone exceeds average. I can do multiple things on the phone without any kind of lag which I depend on with my job. Note that this phone does not have split screen. Also there is NO option for expandable storage. And of course this phone come with bloatware which leaves you with about 80gb. So worth the money? Yes because of performance and physical appearance, but also no because of the fingerprint sensor, face recognition, non expandable storage, bloatware, and non split screen. I do love the phone, I am just disappointed that it lacks the depth of the average "flagship" phone. Would I recommend? Yes if you can deal with all the negatives and want a high performance, okay picture quality, pretty good Stylus that is built in, and overall beautiful physical appearance. This phone is not worth $800 dollars though. I believe this phone is worth about $550 based on the hardware and physical build. Oh and the back is plastic lol... Come on Samsung, really? ... show more
