I've worn Salomon backpacking boots for years and find them to be superior to other brands I've tried. The brand tends to run large, which is OK for me, and I appreciate all the little details. Because I haven't been able to find a replacement for my current Salomon backpacking boot, after doing lots of research I decided to give the Quest Prime Gtx a try. This boot, though I ordered my usual Salomon size, was still way too big both in length and width, and it seemed to be "less than" in comparison with my other Salomon boots materials-wise. While the Quest Prime did have my favorite hiking boot gizmo, the locking eyelet, the rest of the boot was not a real "hiking" boot level of construction in my opinion. The lower eyelets on the boot were all fabric ties that were sewn, there was no nubuck or leather, the tongue fabric was crinkly and papery and did not conform to the foot, and the design of the opening made it really hard to just put the boot on. The material selection seemed odd and the colors were odd. Plus there was only one above ankle eyelet (I prefer two for support). It's an interesting boot that I think uses more inexpensive construction -- for example I didn't notice until the boots arrived that they don't have the real layered toe guard; rather it looks like it's two layers of tread but it's actually one layer that has been molded. The sole was very flat and kind of robotic. Grip was fine but I need more curvature front to back as I walk to help propel into each step. If the boots had fit properly in size, I might have kept them for a budget boot for weekend trail walking, but since I really need more support and performance, I will look for a different boot. ... show more

These boots seem very high quality. I have been looking for boots specifically to accommodate a bunionette, and these definitely had a wide enough toe box to do so. They are higher on the ankle and therefore would offer more ankle support, and the sole is thick and would be good for walking over rough terrain. I ended up returning only because the arch on the shoe did not fit the arch on my foot and therefore they were not as comfortable as I wanted to for long hikes. I would definitely recommend ordering at least a half size down. I normally wear an 8.5 or 9 but an 8 fit best in these. ... show more

    • Runs big
The shoe was comfortable but a little big. I returned them by dropping off at kohls which was super easy. My only complaint is for whatever reason my refund was put on a Amazon gift card instead of credit my credit card. I'm not sure if this was something I over looked or a mistake.

I am a 7.5 wide and these were perfect with the right amount of cushion. I ordered these with 4 other pairs of hiking shoes with prime wardrobe because the hiking shoe selection where I live is little to none and I didn't want to have to deal with committing to buy the shoes and deal with returning. Out of the 4 other pairs I biught these fit perfectly with just a little extra in the toe box (for when the feet swell up) ... show more

These boots are extremely well made and I recommend them. They are just a bit on the large size - I am a 7.5 and I have a bit more room with regular socks than I would like but with thicker hiking socks they are perfect. Good support without rubbing at the ankle and excellent traction which was what I was looking for. ... show more

***Update on my review**** I initially said I loved them, and even though I still think they’re comfortable, they have already began tearing less than a year in. I included the picture. I’m highly upset at the quality, specially for such an expensive boot.

The boots are lightweight, comfortable, and great on all kinds of surfaces. Went on an icy damp hike through the Smokey mountains this past weekend and the stability and comfort are second to none.

    • The W in the title is confusing
This isn’t a review on the quality or performance of this boot but rather the description in the title is confusing. I thought the W was for wide width but these boots are not wide at all. It’s a shame I really wanted to make these boots work . Returned them.
