Based on the iconic speed cross the vario uses a slightly less aggressive tread with siping, and traditional laces for precise grip and comfort on soft or hard surfaces. My favorite shoe company keeps up the good work with the Speedcross Vario 2. This is my 6th pair of Salomons overall, and the second of this model. Few subtle changes, but still great for harder trails and I even use them for some pavement running since they're so comfy.

You should expect your Salomon's to run at least a half size small. I like my shoes a little snug, especially with the terrain around San Antonio, TX, so I only order a half size up. Believe it or not we have some pretty tough backcountry trails featuring loose rock and steep limestone hills. That being said these Bad Boys have are ROCK Hammers! Took them on a 11 mile backcountry run out of the box and they felt great. I can say they felt a little a snug out of box, but after 5 miles they will stretch just enough (Tip: wear a thicker pair of socks for first run). I have tried a few different higher end brand of trail running shoes. Salomon IMO are the toughest. I put 200 plus miles on my first pair and still use them around the house. Know when it's time for a new pair is my second bit of advice. I loved my original pair and didn't want to give them up. Wearing my new pair made me realize how beat up and worn the traction and upper had become (Danger of falling increases). All in all tough shoes for tough trails. This shoe model has actual laces which is the reason I prefer over other Salomon styles. Know your trails, Salomon makes a shoe for: light trails, backcountry and off trail running.     • Might not be comfortable on really long endurance runs
Somewhat narrow as the internal sleeve fits snug to hug your foot but this was what it was designed for. It may loosen up eventually.. Might not be comfortable on really long endurance runs. Tried wearing this to work to break it in but at the end of the day my foot starts to hurt. I would say these will be good for soft/dry and a little technical trails. Has double the lug surface/contact area compared to the Speedcross so I can use it for occasional pavement/trail runs. This is more 90% trail to 10% pavement use. Half size up might loosen snug fit but I decided to keep it. Toe area has enough volume for me. I bought the black color and it's a dust magnet after a 5 mile run. Hate to eat-up the lugs so bought the Sense Pro Max for more road than trail use. i'd say size half size up for comfort. ... show more

These shoes look great on top of giving great grip on uneven surfaces. They cradle your foot and make it feel secure.

    • Love these shoes but a narrow fit.
Love these shoes, great traction, durable. Sizing length is good but they are a little narrow. I have a wide front foot and narrow heel. I still wear and love them but they really hug my toes.

So let me start off saying my job title is "Adventure Therapy" I have a narrow foot, I have been a fan of Salomon for years now although I have had my footwear by them I haven't liked. These are my every day shoes they have amazing traction on rocks, mud, snow, wet grass and logs. They do suffer from some traction loss when on wet mossy rocks/logs (as almost any shoe does) I use these shoes from shooting drills at the range to hiking, geocaching, climbing or just going into town. These shoes are HARD to find! If you are considering getting them and they are in stock in your size, get them while you can. ... show more

    • Slippery when wet
Size: 12.5 Color: Black
I'm really hard on shoes since I a big guy, so I need a shoe that the sole won't breakdown after a few weeks of wearing them. These held up very well. They do run about a half size small but fit very well and have good support. Only complaint I have is they are very slippery on wet hard surfaces.
