This is a great little adapter! I bought this to try to read a 3.5" external HDD for which the enclosure had gone bad. At first I couldn't see the partitions on the drive, but it turned out the partition table was actually corrupted. I was able to read the files with GetDataBack software. It read and copied files to another drive, averaging about 90MB/sec, which was a lot faster than I was expecting. The nice thing about this unit is it will plug into a 2.5" or 3.5" drive, and it includes a power source for the more power-hungry 3.5" drives. Highly recommended!

Worth the read... Sabrent support saves the day!

Disclaimer, this product didn't actually work for me, but I am rating it 5 stars anyway due to the after sales support from Sabrent. I purchased this product to read 4 sn200 u.2 drives I purchased to verify functionality before being placed in a server. If you know about older u.2 tech like the sn200, you will know that these things are insanely power hungry for a drive, consuming over 25watta on startup/run. This product did not work for me because of that, the included adapter can do a max of 24 watts. I contacted Sabrent who immediately opened a case and investigated, we are actually still working back and forth but the experience has been nothing short of incredible... Their techs worked with me and still are months later, they agreed with the issue and are in the process of creating a new product to solve this VERY specific issue even going as far as to purchase drives of their own for internal testing as they did not want to possibly damage mine when I offered them for testing. Sabrent has earned a lifelong customer out of me with this one interaction. Absolutely and seriously impressed..I did confirm functionality with data drives which was nice and the adapter itself is streamlines and smaller than others I've owned. The fast USB connection is nice too. As I said, I'd highly recommend this product even though it technically didn't work for me because of how great Sabrent has been. If you drive draws more than 24w on boot, I would also recommend to wait for the updated version to show up on the market.

Compatibility Problem for NVMe Drives

As you may expect, this product only works with 2.5" SATA SSDs or HDDs without a separate power input (12V). The 3.5" SATA HDD can operate when 12V power is applied. It works very well. Sometimes I lose connectivity, and for some reason, WiFi doesn't work on the desktop, which is the host. I found this to be a little bit easier when using the monitor's USB hub. The problem is 2.5" NVMe SSDs, commonly known as U.2 SSDs. I have three. One P4800X 750GB and two 7300 MAX 3.2TB. It works very well on the P4800X. It shows speeds above 850 MBps for reads and 600 MBps for writes. However, the problem occurred with the 7300 MAX 3.2TB. I think it's a compatibility issue because it's happening the same with the two drives I have. Read operations are possible, but write operations are completely impossible. Not to mention formatting, but benchmarks like CDM are completely impossible. (The CDI works.) Another disadvantage is that Linux compatibility is not written on the spec sheet, so you can't expect much about it. The drive could not be read from my Synology DiskStation. Other linux machines require a little more experimentation. If there is anything awkward about the opinion, I think it is because I used a translator. Please excuse me.

SSD Crashing and HDD Nonfunctional

HDD's simply will not work. It will spin them up, but they won't even show up in diskpart. SSD's will at least work sometimes, although it is far more likely that the system will hard crash while it's trying to read and initialize the drive. After 4 attempts and 4 blue-screens, I was able to get 1 SSD to fully initialize and become readable. Don't bother trying to use this to secure-erase old boot drives. I was never able to get the 2.5" SSD boot drive to initialize. It doesn't understand the reserved partition and usually crashes the system before it's able to initialize it. It did manage to initialize once, but then crashed the system while trying to initialize the actual Local Disk partition. This will not save you time, effort, or anything else. Just get a fully featured enclosure, or take the time to properly hook up the drive internally.

U.2 SSD connector

This works on my specific 4TB SSD. It does not work on regular SSD drives (I thought it should be backward compatible, but it isn't). Works well, no complaints.

I picked this up to attempt to clone a failing disk off to a new SSD drive. No fault of the device, but my drive was far too gone to ultimately recover. But this little powered USB drive adaptor is good! Transfers that it could pull were deliciously fast. It sorts bits all through SCSI over USB protocols (if your drives support this) and is blistering in its performance. USB 3.1, etc. Is all backwards compatible, so this tool works even on older systems needing drive and data hookup and just works. Just not at higher speeds. I say to buy the powered version that comes with a plug-in wall adaptor. It will give you the best overall flexibility to run even 3½" desktop drives, the most power hungry 2½" disk drives, SSD's and any compatible electronic flash type drives. Essentially it's a transfer cable from USB-A <-> Serial ATA that really sustains 5Gb/sec and can juice the drive up to keep it active in heavier power draw scenarios. If you have a similar cable that's only a USB plug and your drive stops, restarts, or just falls offline? It was starved for power. This adaptor fixes those glitches by injecting supplemental power in through a wall wart. I'm thinking of ordering a second one... nothing easier for disk to disk cloning software, OS migration or just powering up old drives as supplemental storage without having to break into your machines and install them semi-permanently.
