The apartment building we live in is currently jackhammering in the garage. It's too loud for our 1-month-old son. I placed the curtains over his crib, which lowered the noise by 14 decibels! (It would have reduced the noise by more if I completely enclosed the crib. However, that would be dangerous. We still need to be able to see him and have adequate air circulation). I will buy another pair to hang as curtains because I am so impressed with the noise-dampening!

Well constructed blackout curtains. As for sound deadening there is a very slight noticable difference. If you are dealing with barking dogs, noisy kids, or street traffic don't expect a miracle.

I wasn't looking to spend a ton of money on curtains, but found these 4 layer curtains that really decrease the amount of heat/sunlight coming into 3 very large windows on my house. I wouldn't say they are "noise cancelling." It's a curtain, it's not going to sound proof anything. But, as a sound deadener, it definitely helps to absorb echo and reverberation in the house. I'll be adding these to an open wall in my theater room for that purpose. Couldn't be happier with this find!

EDIT: I've had these for about half a year now. The felt fabric seems to be shedding, covering my floor with black dust. I've taped the bottom entrance to see how much would collect over the course of 2 weeks (see photo). Subtracting 2 stars just for that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These curtains are way softer than they ought to be. I'm tempted to just take them off the windows and just use them as blankets. Especially because they feel like they have a higher thread count than my actual blankets. Anyways, that's not why you buy this product. These are supposed to be sound-insulating blackout curtains. They're perfect for blocking light, but the curtains aren't soundproof. I can still hear engine noise from the clapped out fart cans every night. Then again, low frequency sounds are really hard to block out, and this does an excellent job at muffling everything else.

Although on the more expensive side, this product received some of the highest reviews from consumer testing, and musicians in particular. This product is fairly heavy because of the multiple layers, so make sure the curtain rods are rated for the weight and are securely fastened to the wall. I added them to my existing set because I preferred the pattern on my regular curtains. Although they don't create a sound proof environment, they do reduce some of the more irritating sounds. I recommend using them along with a few acoustic tiles to reduce the level of sound travelling through the room. I live in an old house, so this is a reasonable alternative to replacing the windows with high rated sound blocking, installing sound barriers in the walls, and adding sound proof insulation. These costs are way more than the cost of these curtains.
